  • Hi Clayton - Thanks for the video man. Very informative and great drills. I’m just getting back in to bowling and ordered my first ball today. One of the things I struggle with is my backswing and getting my hand back under the ball to hook it. I think your foul line drill will help me develop the correct hand/wrist position I need. Thanks!

But ill just say this instead, Keep in mind you must be doing something wrong if your average is that low on a house spot considering you have at least 5 boards of room to miss.

    • I'm glad your enjoying the sport! My only experience with this was when I was a kid and I know some other people don't his, drill a 3rd finger hole for their pinky. What I would try and do is get your wrist in a good spot shown here in the video maybe trying to get further to the side of the ball. Another thing that may help you is getting a wrist brace that will set your wrist in a good position and make it more stable. Hope this helps! Let me know if you need anything!

  • Thank you. Besides your slow replay, KZhead has a setting to play at 1/4 speed so it's easy to see what you're doing. I find that if I throw my ball too hard/fast, it hooks too late. I've got my speed down (most of the time) and throw along the right side of the lane and my ball hooks to the left, sometimes hitting to the right of the 1 pin or the left. So basically, I'm hooking from right to left. My big thing is consistency. Sometimes I throw the ball off of my wrist instead of off my fingertips. My fault. I have to slow down and visualize before I throw. I'd like to learn how to stand more to the left and throw the ball towards the right and see it come back, like what you did here.

    @brigham2250@brigham22505 жыл бұрын
    • Thank you! Speed is definitely a major part to ball reaction. I use speed all the time to slow down move left and hook the lane, or get fast and play straighter. When getting left you have to use more axis rotation on most house shots to get the ball to cover more boards laterally. Work on getting around the ball a little more.

    • @@ChampionshipBowling Thanks for the tips. Also, I made a correction to what I wrote above. I foolishly said that I'm hooking from left to right but meant right to left (as it says now). Someday I'll learn the difference!

    • I bowl from right to left into the pocket, and I use to think going fast was the only way I would be able to get more pins. I recently had my brother help me out, and with him having more hand than I do, he’s been helping me with my speed. I always thought I just couldn’t hook the ball, but if you slow down, you can allow your ball to hook like it’s suppose to and it’s really helped. I went from 13 mph to 11, but I kept hitting the pocket. I’ve then got use to my ball and am back up to 14. But slowing down really helps.

I'm still experimenting with where to stand so that my ball doesn't end up on the left side of the head pin. Your ball appears to have the thumb hole drilled differently than mine. Your thumb hole looks like its way to the right of the middle finger hole or I'm not seeing it properly?

    @DANVIIL@DANVIIL5 жыл бұрын
    • Awesome I'm glad you're getting into it! Getting in the right spot in the lane is critical in finding the pocket and having your ball go through the pins correctly. It's mostly an optical illusion because my ring finger hole is so low, it off towards my middle finger a bit, but still very close to center.

  • What weight is your ball? I’m really struggling switching from two fingers and now using my thumb. My wrist is always on top of the ball. I have no spin anymore. My motion and release are horrible haha. Been trying to throw with a thumb for only two weeks. I thought I had it down but I realized I was using my thumb but throwing the ball like I was with two fingers still. Having my arm kind of curled up and my wrist. My balls seems too heavy to keep it straight like this. I’m using a 15 pound. In good shape but damn my wrist feels weak haha. Not sure if my ball holes are positioned the best for me. Your thumb hole looks offset?

      @ChampionshipBowling@ChampionshipBowling4 жыл бұрын
  • Pretty good, but I didn’t hear you mention that on release the thumb comes out first and then the fingers. You can also practice a release drill kneeling on the floor and keeping the ball on the floor at home, preferably on carpet, although you don’t get quite the feel of the weight on the fingertips. Lastly, and obviously you know this since you work in a pro shop, but people are not going to be able to hook a house ball very much at all because they’re plastic. (Bronze coach).

    @DGV_Tips@DGV_Tips5 жыл бұрын
    • You are correct, those are great drills for getting feel, I'll leave people start with the ball in the approach on knew then stand up and swing it like I did. And yes a house ball won't react nearly as much, however it can be done and still improves entry angle. But that's also a great point, for any of this to work the fingers must come out first. Naturally they should but if not, definitely something one would need to work on.

      @ChampionshipBowling@ChampionshipBowling5 жыл бұрын
    • Chayton Petersen yeah, I assumed your video was aimed primarily at league bowlers. For date night, if you wanted to try to impress somebody hooking a house ball, I would suggest just putting just your fingers in and leaving your thumb out, cupping your wrist so the ball rests on your forearm, and then flicking the ball out on to the lanes, rotating your fingers from 6 o’clock to 4 o’clock quickly…if the lanes are dry you may get a decent hook.

  • What is the weight for bowling ball which suitable for the hook. Tq

    @mikeleong5612@mikeleong56125 жыл бұрын
    • Awesome question. The simple answer is it doesn't really matter, with these techniques using the weight that you can best control and use without hurting yourself is great. The long answer is it depends. Speaking strictly of Storm, they put the same core in all balls under 13 pounds so the only thing changing from ball to ball at that weight is coverstock. The will change how each ball hooks. Also looking at RG and Differential, typically a 15 pound ball has slight better numbers that make it ideal. A lot of PBA bowlers use this weight because of that. There's definitely exceptions to this, norm Duke throws 16 and look at him. So Ultimately, I suggest you use these techniques and the heaviest ball you can safely use.

    • If you study his action (especially at 1:28. Set the vid at 0.25 speed), the shoulder has a lot to do with it. He flares his shoulder out just as he's about to release. This automatically switches the position of the hand so that it's more side on to the ball. Then he rips the ball while it's in this position, imparting the rotation.

      @ChampionshipBowling@ChampionshipBowling5 жыл бұрын
  • First off no one is gonna get a ball drilled like yours. Second everyone is gonna have a different ball roll. And good Bowles can change there wrist position giving the ball a different toll. As in making the ball go longer down the lane or hook earlier. Also in order to put the most revs on the ball the most important tip would be to work the inside of the bowling ball. Watch any pro and you’ll see that at the point of release there hand goes from the inside of the ball and almost creates a motion like a yo yo as the ball is going down
