HomeMade Kinetic Log splitter (better than hydraulic?)

For many people, a kinetic splitter may be a better solution than a hydraulic splitter.
The biggest advantage of such a splitter is its speed. The entire cycle takes less than a second, thanks to the energy accumulated in the very heavy flywheel.
My splitter may be a bit too fast, but I had no way to choose other gears.

  • Man I’m a retired welder fabricator of over forty years, and I’m putting you up there with me brother. lol. Really nice work. That thing doesn’t play , I would like to see it split some hard oak or maple, just to see what it does. But I have to say, you did a fine job building it. ✌️👍. Oh one more thing, I would love to see it with the shrouds off to see just a bit more. I am impressed for sure. I’ve been doing fab work most of my life. It’s good to see someone else that does the same thing. The few jobs I’ve had working for someone else, when you’re good at this type of thing they always leave you to do your thing. It’s like being your own boss even though you work for someone. I know I drove a lot of people crazy because I don’t ever get yelled at and people do get jealous of the respect I always got. I always enjoyed working because it is something different all the time. Good luck to you brother. ✌️

  • Good job. Excellent speed. Thought some of the structure was a trifle light but for a single household will probably give a good long service. Love to try it out on some of the knarly oldman pine I deal too, that sometimes stonkers my 35ton hydraulic splitter. But yours is much faster and quieter. Well don that man!

  • You designed a very clever device to split firewood. It is the all-around best design I've seen. I have looked at a lot of them in the last 65 years. I think it will stand up on its back wheels and rest on the motor adjusting bolt to store in less space. To do that, it needs something sturdier than a piece of all-thread. The execution is first-rate as well.

  • great idea...if the main shaft was always connected going forward you could have achieved the clutch by a pully to the belt from motor... on the main shaft it would have needed to be spring loaded and your mechanism would have also have needed to be fitted...only difference would be there would not be a clunk of gears when engaging.

  • Nice build but I've never been in a hurry and the one I got will split or cut anything. It's not fast but it's not supposed to be, and it's hydraulic. And backwards form yours. I just have to deal with the splits instead of the blocks. And I split oak and maple, usually from 18 to 24 inches through and at least 18 inches long. The crotches are the worst but nothing stopped it yet. You just stand off to the side when it starts. Been known to sling fair sized chunks Thanks!

  • Is there a way to compare it to the tonnage of a hydraulic cylinder to get some kind of idea of what it can do? I really like the seriousness of that splitter but it can be deceiving by the wood you were splitting. One thing for certain is there is no forgiveness if your fingers are in the wrong place. I’m dealing with so much variety with the wood that I split and burn,so I’m more comfortable using my hydraulics. But I can definitely see a purpose in a more perfect world to have and use the one you built. I’m getting old and slightly slower nowadays but I think I might have preferred yours some years back. Thanks for sharing your work ethics, knowledge and build. Peace
