Biggest problem with Sony in my experience, is that they tend to drop support for their devices much sooner than other companies.
This will always happen with anything niche. Mass market products tend to get longest support since the company wants people to keep buying the stuff even several years after the launch. It's not the case with niche stuff as there won't be anymore people buying after the launch, so there's no incentive for the company to keep the support
5 yrs (Samsung) vs 2 or 3 years for Sony - not cool!
That and software is ass
Not only Sony, Motorola..
@@hirukashiro5995 the damage was done back when they WERE a major player as Sony-Ericsson... They dropped support for phones within a year... It burned so much of their fan-base. The situation they're in now, with low adoption numbers, is because they screwed over their past customers. I think they make some of the best looking phones, but I'll never buy another. Never.
I hope Sony doesn't stop making these. Photographers and videographers love these phones. Edit: I shoot on a Canon M50 and an iPhone 13 pro. Tried the Xperia 1 IV in store and thought it was cool, didn't have 1300 bucks to spare tho, so I understand everyone's arguments about buying it.
But I thought the photos were terrible. (FYI, I am a Sony phone owner).
What photographer/videographer would buy this? If you're going to shell out this much dough and you're already in the industry, there's a chance you already have a dedicated camera for it. Also the phone doesn't do anything above and beyond what a galaxy s22 ultra or 23 ultra can do if you're an up and coming media creator
@@memofromessex automode photos are terrible. Manual are among best there is. But casuals like me cannot use manual setting, i have no idea what they do and i dont want to learn it. I want to point and shoot. And that exactly the weak spot of them, while professionals can archive much greater result on them compared to other phones.
Audiophiles love the Xperias as well, I hope these things get more attention in the future.
The “imagine technology” of S23u and iPhones is terrible
sony was the best phone manufacturer when android came out to play. I still remember using old xperia phones & we were super hyped
Spot on! As a owner of many Xerpia phones over the last 10 years or so, I find it very difficult to support the brand in the last few years because of the reasons you've mentioned, despite me knowing they are an amazing product that stands out from the rest, they just need to even out their offering a little more and launch it properly and they'll be great again.
Xperia PRO-I - professional Xperia 1 - flagship *Xperia 5 - premium mid-range* Xperia 10 - mid-range Xperia Ace - budget The Xperia 5 series' role was supposed to be everything that Marques said.
My thoughts exactly
Actually I always considered the 5 more as a compact flagship instead of "only" premium mid-range. Apart from Apple, Sony has been the only company that was able (or willing) to put premium tech and features in a compact case.
almost everything he said the xperia 5 already does. They just really need to step up their point and shoot game... though based on other reviews, the mark V series is a huge step forward towards a great auto mode.
And V is a bit too expensive. I still bought myself V mk4 though, but it was with a discount and xm4 bundle
Or even drop the Ace line. It feels like they'd have to sacrifice too much to keep all Sony thing to compete with all $150-300 phones. Imo the sweet spot would be PRO-I as it is, bring in everything you have, Xperia 1 - 6.5" 4K flagship, Xperia 5 - 6" 1440p premium mid-range, Xperia 10 - 5.5" 1080p mid range. I'd gladly swap to Sony with such lineup
If Sony wants to compete, remember 3 things 1. Reasonable price 2. Reduce minor bugs 3. Sack the marketing team (No one try to introduce the product and release it after 2 month when everybody’s excitement is over) I never used Sony phone, but I am really glad of their keeping 3.5mm and sd card, and like their design aesthetics. In this iPhone and Galaxy market, we need a competitor like Xperia. Please keep up
4. Provide updates for at least 5 years Nobody is spending over 1k for a phone that doesn't get updated after 2 years.
Never mind minor bugs, reduce major bugs
sony just needs to sell their phones to more then the US, if you only sell it to a single country in the entire world no wonder its sales are so low.
the thing is mostly that sony doesnt need to make a profit of the phones, it seems like its just someone at sony that wants phones their way and is ready to keep that going no matter how well they are recieved by the masses, since the phone is not for the masses, its for a niche group that enjoys android phones they were before everyone was trying to be more like apple... qualcom recently announced that sony will make phones for years to come so it seems it doesn't hurt them continuing the way they operate now.
@@chronchris1486 i mean they will have to do that at some point if they want to continue selling in the EU since there will be a regulation for that... they haven't announced a final update window for the 1 V yet, so there is a tiny chance it might have that
Man, Sony phones live in my heart and head rent-free. My first smartphone was a Sony phone, and not even a flagship. It was a budget phone, and I loved the fact it could keep up with all my tasks until its android version was too old to get updates for apps and stuff. Plus, I accidentally dropped it from the fifth floor, so it died a fighter. I really loved how personal it could get if you used a phone for a while-after two years out of five we had together, I knew everything about it. If something did not work or happened, I knew how to fix it or what was happening. I knew all the quirks and the ways around them. When they cut down their budget segment I was a student who couldn't afford buying his own phones, then, they holed up in their flagship segment releasing only flagship for niche price. I still wish for them to make a comeback and take over the phone sector. Love Sony
I left Sony for Samsung and immediately regretted it after spending a lot...I can't use cameras that lack good manual control...the pictures are never what am going for even in pro mode they are trash...yes I tried the iPhone and they too are trash due to the lack of control that Sony lets me have...YOU HAVE TO USE THE SONY before you judge it by this video...this video doesn't do the Sony any GOOD. trust me
You’re literally proving his point
having the SD card slot, Headphone jack & Camera Bezzel already tick half of my very small Checklist of things all phones need here's hoping Sony continues this quality & finds a proper niche
Seriously, finding a good phone that has a headphone jack is way too hard nowadays
For me it's sd card, 120hz and latest SD like gen 8 +2, currently am using razer phone 2 been looking at Sony but their prices are crazy. My budget 500-800 dollars for next 3-5 year's

can you do a video comparing the pro photos vs the auto photos on this phone? It would be cool to see how much "performance" is being left on the table.
Right? This is like the 3rd Sony flagship review where MB talks about how bad the auto mode is and how amazing the pro mode is but doesn’t show a single example. I’d gladly buy this over the next pixel (and learn how to use it) if he showed it was superior
It's a little harder because in the PRO mode, the only way you're getting most of it, is if you're saving both raw + jpg. And it's the raw images that allow you to recover more of the highlights and shadows with better exposure and white balance tuning. Straight out of the camera, maybe not much since the BASIC mode already pre-processes by applying noise reduction algorithms and sometimes, HDR.
@@joshuabrunetta4656 At this point Sony should just pay him to do it if it can really perform in the right hands. Otherwise it's just a confirmation bias
Sony's auto mode outshine even gcam . Many people don't know it .
from others review, Sony's auto mod is not that bad as how MB said. last gen for example even on par or better in some case against flagship from google and apple
Loved the hell out of the z3 and z5, loved the compact versions. Loved the phone colors, features, size and no bloatware. Bring it back!
I still have the Z1, Z3, and Z4 in my junk drawer. all broken... but was amazing back then!

From a Japanese perspective... Japanese 3 major cell phone carrier has "Spring Collection" and "Autumn Collection," and I think it might be one of the factors for long waiting period; you just have to know which cycle your desired phone is on. Many of the Japanese companies, not limited to smart phone makers, are so fixed on the domestic market first. In this regard, the Japanese car makers have adjusted well for the motor shows to compete with the world stage, but then EV came along and they are well behind again. I had to get a new phone last year, and my phone's spec sheet wasn't even complete, yet the phone carriers were saying "Reserve the Phone" before the going into the market day, and in my case, even on the day the phone was going to the market... I had to depend on phone case maker (my phone's spec sheet was missing the thickness lol) Japan is a tad bit weird place, and it seems smart phone makers can't let go of the golden era of flip phones we had here in Japan. I believe SONY is the only Japanese smart phone maker which sells worldwide? I think SONY doesn't know what the worldwide users want...
Yeah, it's a similar case for multitude of Japanese companies in general. Domestic market demand completely trumps foreign demand, leading to Japanese companies to focus primarily on the trends of the Japanese market. Even if Japanese companies want to access foreign markets, they have no idea how to do it & it leads to ineffective efforts. One of my friends who works in the music industry said that foreign markets are the lowest priority, to the point that he had to beg his superiors to do social media campaigns for foreigners because they didn't care at all.
Also only sells in Japan. Nobody else even know Sony has a smartphone.
1 - an American viewpoint does not mean it's a worldwide viewpoint. We need to stop believing that our perspective is universal around the globe as that's a good portion why many countries are turning away from us. 2 - a company like Sony isn't going to make a foreign specific phone just for the eyes of America, or Europe, cause they'll be crucified. It's no different to the American outrage towards movie companies that began to focus on the Chinese market since their movie audience started to catch up and occasionally surpassed ours in terms of money made.
Galapagos Syndrome
Even for weebs as me, they sucked at software part. I wanted to pay for a stable phone that would do its job, but got a phone that freezes for a half a minute a few times a day. Wtf
If somebody in Sony actually took some notes from this video, in 1-2 years time they're seriously gonna have an industry killer phone. I'm already excited seeing the list of specs and features at the end of the video. Kudos to Marques for bringing up this idea
If any phone would get me to switch back to android, it would be a do it all sony Xperia. They make the most aesthetic phones in the entire market.
@@RealNathanExplosion That's the reason I also would switch to andorid again! Those SM Galaxy, Oppo, OP Phones are all in their way good, but Sony always has a special place in my heart when it comes to smartphones. If they would release a smartphone for the mass I would buy it for sure! Hope they will also follow suit and support their software for 3-4 years instead of 2.
Sony already builds the phone he wishes for - it is the Xperia 5 series
Yeah some school dropout from da hood (marcus blacklee) is going to tell the best tech company on earth how to run a business? He better focus on being a runaway dad and selling drugs back in da hood
Na Sony has a Niche target market ... Average user wont even know or care about all the profesional features it has....
I want to buy that phone you've described! The narrow body, 3.5 mm, IP68, no holes in screen, good camera which works as good as Google's. If it would allow to move clock back to the top right corner - I would pay extra $100 right now.
Did you find anything close?
I had a SONY Xpreria V1 with verizon way back in the day. I loved that phone the dedicated camera button, it was one of the first water resistant phones out, it had a lot of great features. But it wasn't supported at all by SONY. I remember my biggest issue with it was that you couldn't talk on the phone and browse the web simultaneously. I also loved the feel of the phone.
For this year's blind smartphone camera test you should have two Xperia one V's in the bracket; one on auto mode and one where you manually adjust image settings to fine tune the 'ideal' picture. Would be interesting to see how a well tuned/adjusted sony phone can compete with the pixel, iphone, and samsung flagships
Ugh if only he’d see your comment.
Exactly this!
The idea of the test, though, is to show the experience the most basic user will have - just point and shoot with whatever auto settings the phone chooses. If you involve manually configuring your camera settings, there should be a separate competition only for manual mode shots, which will take sooo much more time to make and produce.
this is the exact weak spot of DXOMark - they test all phones on default settings, which makes their scores and comparisons way off.
you should say this closer to when he is actually going to do that and probably on twitter as he's not going to see this and definitely not remember about your comment months later
Great to see tech reviewers not only reviewing the products but helping companies to do well! I Hope Sony hears this out
It needs to be called the Xperia M1 with the M referring to Marques
Sony is stubborn.. 😂 they won't do it..
@@danielobioma9091 Not just stubborn, they are arrogant and taking an advice is beneath them. And Marques is not even Japanese, which is another major factor.

Brilliant design by Sony which also include the Xperia 10 Mark 5. But I can't afford them. All I can do is continue using this less than 100 US dollar phone with no notch and no hole in it's 5.45" screen. It comes with big top and bottom bezels, notification light, wireless FM radio, a 3-card slot and a 4000mAH Battery. That's enough for me at the moment.

Have been a Follower of Marques Brownly since 2008 on all things Tech. Great content every time. Fantastic Job 👍.
Bro, thank you for being our voice. We really don't want companies like Sony to die and I hope your words can put some sense into their minds. (which I know is very tough after living in Japan for 5 years)
Honestly, I think this video is missing the point. Sony is not going anywhere. They DO make profitable popular products, they make Playstation, TVs, headphones, cameras, lenses. Their business is not in danger. Whether they add a new cheaper popular phone model doesn't change their decisions on continuing or stopping making expensive flagships.
Well lg and sony won't ever die as they do much more than just phones but yeah they're phones might be gone soon
The point with Japan is definitely true. Japanese companies feel so weird at times: They do some things better than everyone else but then oftentimes they seem to get the most basic stuff wrong like they're living in an echo chamber without any user feedback or outside criticism. I notice that a lot with Nintendo too.
@@grumd0from a business perspective they could say we should close the smartphone department
Sony won't die, but their mobile division might if they don't make these adjustments.
The Porsche analogy was spot on but I think the difference between Sony and Porsche is Sony makes a whole line up for various products (tvs, cameras, headphones, etc) that perform well enough to support them making luxury high end smart phones like this. I think it make sense for Sony to continue to produce these phones vs LG, HTC because as new smartphones release year after year there’s more focus on cameras and as a top notch camera company a high end camera - phone seems like a good move 👀
Yes! I agree. And why produce something mediocre?
The Porsche Appliances are called Panamera, Cayenne and Macan.
Not a sound analogy with Porsche. Sony does have many Cayennes. TVs, camera, headphones ... really most electronics you can think of. Also, they did offer cheaper phones for over a decade and those phones were actually the reason their phone division went down. Maybe tech reviewers should stick to reviewing tech and stop trying to be business strategy consultants.
@@e.vandesande4487 I don't think the path marques layed out would be considered mediocre. Seems like a fantastic pixel alternative in the making.

Rewatching this now and it's crazy that Sony implemented ALMOST every point in this video onto their Sony Xperia 5V device. The only deviation was price. Sony is charging around 900-1000 for the 5V instead of the 700-800 dollar range MKBHD suggested.
Also crazy how they decide not to bring it to the US market (or so i’ve heard).
Are you serious? You think this guy gave Sony the idea? Sony been making xperia 5 for like 5 years now. And before that there was the comoact series of phones which were essentially the same concept this guy claiming to be a 'new idea'.

This is such a love letter to Sony, I hope it plays in front of the board meeting as soon as possible. We know they have what it takes to be contenders, we are all just waiting for them to get it right.
He's wrong though. Sony tried competing with Apple and Samsung for years and kept losing money. Now they've moved to selling super expensive phones to their camera fans and are finally making a profit. If they followed Marques' advice they'd go the way of HTC and LG.

Marques Brownlee should know that SONY is never going to do any of those things that he has suggested. For a Japanese company it is more honorable to fail and to go bankrupt then listen to its customer's suggestions and give the customer what they want. It is completely against the Japanese customs and traditions to comply with its customers, because it makes them look bad thus causing them to lose face. Japanese motto is either you take what we give you or if you have any complains then you should not have taken it in the first place, because the company always knows what is best for the customers.
Japanese companies are...... complicated...
I've been waiting for Sony to get it right for half a decade! Flat screen, no punch hole, dedicated camera shutter button, variable aperture are all Sony hallmarks which I LOVE!! I wish they just got a simple point-and-shoot camera with AI assist and Sony's off to the races with the big boys!
this is EXACTLY what i have been thinking about xperia phones for YEARS and finally someone, like MKBHD with a huge audience said this, hopefully Sony listens. Give the Xperia the PS5 marketing treatment or something. Xperia phones are still rather popular in sweden still!
80% of what mkbhd said has been on the market in the name of Xperia 5. 6.1", 1080p, 120 hz, HDR screen. The auto mode has been improved through the years I believe, especially in 1 V.
The best review ever. Really really brilliant mkbhd. Keep it up
Owned the first waterproof Sony. Was a great phone but also the only one that had it's screen crack from mechanical stress (keeping it in my pocket). You should put a DSLR in the blind smartphone camera test next year to see how big a difference it makes to regular people.
I think thats a fun idea, but it should probably be something like a fullframe mirrorless camera, dslrs are pretty much outdated tech at this point.
The difference with a camera is not visible on a smartphone screen. The camera lets you get some pictures the phone can't IF you know how use the camera. Also a camera demands you to postprocess the images. It's her purpose. Even cameras like Fuji has some preprocessing features that give them their distinctive look.
@@JacksonKillroyWhile picture quality between phone cameras and DSLRs are similar enough for most, DSLRs give more freedom over your image through swappable lenses and precise control over aperture and exposure. Phone cameras are more than enough for most people and even most photographers, but fine control over specific aspects of the photograph allow for a greater expression of creativity.
@@NulromI’m curious what you think is “not visible” on a smart phone screen from a mirrorless camera? Because I can tell, with extreme ease, the difference between my iPhone photos and my Sony a6400

Great Sony mobile division analysis and great advice given. I really like the comparison with the Porsche. I totally agree they should give the people what they want, especially your suggestion about the specs, screen size and 3.5mm and auto camera. People like to take the phone out of the pocket and take a good quick photo. They should make something similar to the Zenfone 10 as there are not many Android phones with that screen size, everyone is making big screen phones today. I had a couple of Sony models back in the days when they were competitive to others and I’d probably buy one again if they listen to you and make what you suggested. But it looks like the Sony gave up the phone market. They are roaming for years now and cannot compete with other phone makers in any segment. I do not remember seeing someone with Sony phone in years.
casually watching MKBHD is surprisingly educational. I'm not even a teccie but I learn so much about the tech world on this channel!
This year in the blind smartphone camera test, you should make two of the cameras this phone - with one in auto mode and the second using a comfortable photographer in manual mode. Would be really interesting to see it prove how capable it is.
That's actually a good idea ngl
Bro even though a manual camera photoes might turn out to be better, its not like you are going to use it everytime, it beats the purpose of smart phone camera, most of the people just like to open there camera and click photos, and if i want a manuel camera to click photos i would rather go for a dslr, at these price range you will get way way better quality of photos than by a phone..

@@Almaironn well it dependes person to person, a guy who wants to do a professional photography will any way chose a proper camera as compared to a smart phone camera, at 1400 price point, even if i go for 700 dollar smart phone, and 700 dollar dslr, i would be getting best of the both world, a good smartphone camera to click photos on the go, and a dslr for a better professional photography. I am really rooting for Sony. I’m an Apple guy, but I hope Sony will continue on providing newer technologies and possibly even having their own OS. Japan tried to join the smartphone bandwagon way too late and before that, they made some of the coolest flip phones on the market.
Own OS? They can't even get their phones right for Many reasons, let alone an OS. Shitty auto mode has been going around for like 10 years already.
Unfortunately, Sony is facing an extremely uphill battle for the international market, and they can all but forget trying to dominate their domestic market. The iPhone is BY FAR the best selling phone in Japan, and has been for over a decade.
Own OS would definitely hurt, because nobody would develop for it. Remember Windows Phone OS? Even such big SOFTWARE player as Microsoft could stay at the market where there were 2 OSes already present.
Sony should rather focus on VR headsets or other wear tech. Sometimes it’s good to give up on one areas to win the upcoming. Apple gave up on PCs and were ahead by 5 yrs in smartphone market. Sony can pull that off. Smartphone market or at least premium smartphone market is 2 horses race. Galaxy & iPhone.
I consider Sony's like-stock Android a feature. There's no point bloating it, let alone outright shipping a new OS...
This is spoken like a business case study. Well done
I love sony they always make good products but those camera settings look too complicated for me idk how to used them 😅
It's so surprising that their camera app doesn't just put out killer photos from the rip. Their mirrorless cameras stripped a lot of people from Canon and Nikon, and did it with great autofocus and great photos without much effort.
"Without much effort" is subjective. Their camera and video apps in the phone come with all the same settings and menu options as the alpha cameras. The phones also come with really good subject detection and auto focus. Which means if you know how to set shutter speed, ISO, and aperture then you're going to have great photos even when the subject is moving in an action shot. If you really dial in the customizable presets then I bet you can get a comparable photo form this phone as a camera 2-3 times the price. But with default and auto settings an alpha camera isn't that impressive. I spent a few hours setting up my a7iv and a7c, creating presets for different lenses and lighting conditions... That's a lot to ask for someone with a phone where the moment might be lost by the time you dial in the settings.
Which mirrorless camera? I'm a camera novice who wants something semi-pro but doesn't want to spend my whole life "learning cameras". Sony has always made great shit but I'm curious which you think is the most consumer-friendly.
@@reanimationxp I really like using the a7iv and my gmaster lenses. But something like the sony fe 35mm f1.8 would be fine for most people. The main thing is what your intended use would be for the camera? Most people that spend $4000 on a camera and lens, but don’t learn all the ends in out, are often times better off just using their cell phone. Part of what makes mirrorless cameras and separate lenses so compelling is the complete freedom to change any setting to match your environment. Otherwise you’ll end up with white blown out skies, a group photo with half the people in focus, or images with colors that feel completely unnatural. Granted, a lot of cell phones get all those things wrong too, but they are cheaper and multifunctional.
Not sure what he's talking about. My Xperia 1 III takes better photos than the IPhone 14 Pro in point and shoot. It produces more detailed images while keeping it realistic. Lots of phones nowadays just applies so much sharpening and structure which makes everything look like plastic. Not being racist here but Xperia uses face metering and since it's not optimized for darker skin tones it tends to overexpose. You can fix this by turning off face detection though.
It'd be interesting to have a Sony 1 Mark V (Full Manual) entry on the next blind camera test in addition to the (Full Auto) entry, just to drive home the point. You'd have to create a repeatable process for tuning the settings, but it'd be interesting to see how the sensor at its best could do compared to everything else
PLEASE DO THIS!
No then they have to do manual and auto for every phone, also options are different for every phone.
@@chench1llaya they should do just that.. take RAWs and compare

But with that being said, I think you hit the nail on the head with your suggestions. I would hate to see Sony stop making the Experia. I’m also considering selling my cameras and taking that money to possibly buy the Xperia Pro 2, if it’s ever released . Great review!
How long have you had your phone, and do you still have it? How does it work at this point. I was thinking about getting it, but I see some reviews talking about random rebootings, overheating, and other poor things. Is it good in the long run?
I’ve had it for a few years now. I haven’t experienced any of the rebooting problems that others are talking about. As far as overheating, that too has never been an issue. But then again, I don’t game or do I stay on my phone all the time. And when I do use it to video tape a concert, I’m only running the app for about four minutes at a time. So that may be why I haven’t had any issues. It’s a good phone but there are so many new phones out now that have a great camera. If that’s what you’re looking at it for.

As a hard-core Xperia enthusiast, I wholeheartedly agree! Especially with regard to the auto mode for the camera - I consistently wonder why my auto photos turn out worse than most other phones when Sony is the one making the sensors for all of them!
its market. sony is researching and investing money into hardware part. In this case sensors. other companies buy them and pay for using it in their phones. but the result of the beatiful photo results is not only hardware part. Mostly its now all about post software processing. And here we have 2 ways again. Developing and Invisting by your own or buy it from the others. But just buying may have also conceptual restictions, which will force to rework their phone architecture or the other companies are just not selling such develepoments. why dont they do more investments in their own developement? Hello, Sony Enthusiast, Can I lure you into a kind of scam looking scheme, but in reality is top legitimate.

I remember having my Z5 back in 2016-17 and it was probably the best phone I had. It's basically all that you described with a very good functional camera, but still room to edit much more than on other phones, and the camera is so good that pictures from back then are still better than some taken with the new S23. It still had all IP68 resistance, good battery life, the side fingerprint reader and shutter button, great screen for the time (it was the phone right before Sony's very first 4K phone), and it wasn't as ridiculously expensive as they are today. The issue is that that was the last phone gen they sold before pulling out from most of the world (except for Japan, the US and Europe) and before Sony started focusing on premium camera-phones and on the US market.

Excellent Sony Xperia 1 V review! You are right on point on the small, niche market of Sony users, Sony to Porsche and give the consumer what they want. Sony phones are great to use and tech under the hood is amazing and intimidating at the same time to the average consumer. A low spec and budget friendly device would be an amazing plus to Sony and the consumer alike.
it's nice to see sony experiment when every company is following the same blueprint
Go away bot
Experiments killed LG
report it
Lg did the same and look at then now, dead.
At this point they’re not experimenting, they’re just intentionally being inefficient. They’ve had this problem since the Ion a decade ago. Sony isn’t growing as a company, they’ve shut down just about every store in the states, massive layoffs every year. They’ve fallen from the grace of being the most innovative tech company in the world to being content with mediocrity. The Porsche comparison isn’t accurate. Sony is more like Jaguar. A company that’s been in limbo for decades not knowing how to effectively convert consumers and become relevant again.
To be fair, the window from announcement to release of phone gives an enthusiast like me ample time to prepare my finances, backup my work, and get ready for the upgrade. On top of that, my past 3 Sony phones have served me well close to a decade because they are really built to last. Will still choose Sony for the foreseeable future. Excellent and well thought out engineering.
I think part of it might also come down to gauging demand: there's more opportunity to scale manufacturing to purchasing so they don't overproduce a phone that they know is very niche. If they wanted to be able to sell the phone at launch, they would have to have already made enough back stock to cover potential sales; if those sales numbers don't keep up with the inventory, they have a lot of expensive hardware that they're unable to get rid of. I used to work in cell phone sales, and while I as the salesperson loved Sony phones, I very rarely had customers express an interest in buying them, even with an endcap showcasing live demos of the phone. Ultimately, they almost always went with Motorola or Samsung--for whatever reason, Sony just didn't attract customers' attention. So that leads to Sony making way more of those phones than they need to and buying saddled with old inventory. If they're waiting to see how many people put the money down for these phones, they can hedge their bets on manufacturing just a little bit and roll them out as customers want them. I don't know how their manufacturing process works, of course, but they just seem to be taking a very conservative approach to their sales.
I used a Samsung S10 for so many years (still use it) and it was fine but I also had some Sony phones and I must admit that they usually look way better.
"the window from announcement to release of phone gives an enthusiast like me ample time to prepare my finances, backup my work, and get ready for the upgrade." Those should all be done for any given moment to arrive to get a new phone. 1) You should always have more than enough to buy a new phone for any valid reason (accident, failure etc). 2) Backups should be done to your own NAS backup system by daily profile, using rsync, even hourly. 3) There is nothing to get "ready" when changing phones. Your home screen and its settings move between brands, your phone settings move so, your files, profiles etc. Only things that needs is renaming the new phone and configure it to work with backup system and your own services, and that takes like 30 min when you have documentation (to-do list) for that.
Gr8 review even if I didn't see it for ages. I've been a Sony addict for years & couldn't agree more about their niche appeal(I hope that's not the only reason I'm hooked). Adore their screens but you definitely have to get to know how to operate the camera systems, if you do the results are astonishing. Without the know how expect some surprisingly average looking efforts, defo not for lazy snap catchers.
Add a physical ring/silent/vibrate slider from OnePlus to this and it's a dream phone as far as I'm concerned

I have a friend who specifically only used Sony phones since she was in highschool. Their lifespans are crazy. I remember her first sony phone lasted around 8 years and the one she currently has is from 2018? The only reason why it's not working too well now is because she dropped it, but before that, everything was still pristine. The price is a little high but for something that lasts that long, I think it's a good investment!
Yep, Sony phones don't seem to have planned obsolescence, in fact they give you great battery protection features so that they last long. My Samsungs all die after 1 - 2 years, either the motherboard gives up, or the display will show a line, which gradually covers the entire screen.
I really loved the Xperia XA I had back in highschool. Yes it got slow over time since it was a budget device, but for 2016 ish, the camera was so good compared to what my parents had for example on their Huawei. I would argue that Sony's already ahead of the Porsche analogy you made. They've been able to make these enthusiast phones because as a company, they're doing phenomenal everywhere else when it comes to consumer electronics.
Their departments (mobile, camera, audio, gaming) are very compartmentalized and they often fear cannibalizing the brand. They could make a better camera and add a better DAC but they choose not to. Also Sony has a weird habit of complying with local standards like the EU having safe listening so their speaker and headphone volume is often quieter than it could be. Until more recently their mobile department seemed the most backwards/conservative/old-school like Nintendo and Canon.

@@timaustin2000 That's loser mentality.
Actual photographers and videographers use real cameras with quality lenses If they had to use a phone, they would at least want a 1 inch or larger sensor
But most of them use Iphones
I've been using only Sony phones since the Sony Ericsson Xperia pro slider, in 2011. I've gone through the Z, Z2, Z5 Premium, XZ Premium and Xperia 1 II. I've never really cared all that much about photo quality. What I've always appreciated is the build quality on these phones. I've never had an issue with them, hardware wise; they're quite robust. And software wise, I like Sony's minimalist approach. Frankly, the only thing stopping me from moving to the new 1 V is the price. These phones need to be around 1k, tops
Software wise the biggest issue is them dropping support for great features. Album app: gone Themes: gone 1 hand mode: gone and replaced by unusable Google version ...
I went through 3 years with XZ Premium without ANY problems until I dropped it from a 10ft ladder and no one could replace the screen… really miss it honestly.
I'd love a high-ish spec compact phone again. Still got an old xperia z5 compact somewhere, that thing was awesome in its day, great camera, ip68, loved it. And 💯 agree with the rest of your recommended specs.
Waiting for Xperia 5 V review vs your recommendation 😊
It's better to have a little bit bezels for the camera other than having an intrusive punch hole. Also love the 21:9 display. I am also having a phone with 21:9 cinema aspect display, Moto One Action , very convenient for single handed usage.
