Top 5 Reasons Why The Sony Xperia PRO-I Is Still Great To Buy Or Keep In 2024!

Hello everyone and Happy Holidays! I am frequently asked if the Sony Xperia PRO-I is still a good device to buy even two years after its release in December 2021. Or maybe you're someone curious about why Sony enthusiasts are passionate about this smartphone, ummm, I mean camera. In this video I give you my 5 top reasons why it's still a great device to purchase (or keep if you’re thinking about switching) in 2024! And if you're not interested in buying it, maybe it will help you understand why someone like me has stuck with their smartphones since the Xperia Z1!
These top 5 reasons are the ones that have stood out for me frequently the most from the past 16 months of using the Xperia PRO-I on a daily basis. So tap that play button and let’s find out what they are!
Want to know what the Zeiss look is and why Sony uses their expertise on their lenses, compact cameras and flagship smartphones? Check out this link below!
• Sony Zeiss Lenses On T...
All the pictures and videos from the Sony Xperia PRO-I and ZV1 are taken handheld with optical stabilization on (except for the scenes in my "micro-studio" which are on a tripod). The majority of them have not been edited and are what comes out of both cameras. Only for the DNG to JPEG files, I ran them through Lightroom Classic and only used auto mode.
Note: This isn't the final video I wanted to upload and only a rough cut. When I was doing final edits in DaVinci Resolve, it suddenly froze up and I had to restart it. When I went to open this video file, it had been deleted! Do you remember all of the hype over DaVinci Resolve earlier this year and how it was the ultimate video editor? Well, it also has many issues which aren't discussed on You Tube. However, I'm only using the free version and don't know if the Studio version has many bugs and other issues.

    • @@thefitlifechannel2021 handles heat really well, battery is amazing and video pro is like a dream. Focus peaking is amazing as well as S cinetone. I'm now living in Malta and had no heat issues at all. The only negative is the telephoto it needs more work as it is far too soft. The main sensor is a complete game changer and it frankly is better than the larger one In the Pro I, HDR is much better. I heard even basic auto mode is .icg better , but I don't use it for a point and shoot as I would have got a Samsung if I wanted that. Overall score , I would give it a 8/10 And it's really fun to play about with and I have not had that fun since the 1 iii. The Focus peaking is really handy and now we have a handy histogram on video and not just photo. Stabilisation at 4k is amazing when set to ultra high quality but that crops in a little and limits to 30fps. Also the eye level focusing only works up to 30fps too. Only thing that lets it down is the telephoto

    • @@theSFCchannel That's really good to it's been a positive experience for yourself! It does seem like the Xperia I V improved many things over the PRO-I and I IV. The telephoto camera has always been soft since the I iii and perhaps it needs a few more years of development to improve (perhaps it has something to do with space for it since the Xperia 5 V omitted it?) never understood why the PRO-I didn't have focus peaking and a histogram for the video side for being a camera aimed at pros. Even my Note 20 Ultra can do focus peaking!

  • I loved my Pro-i too. Until it kept running hot when vlogging. Nothing fixed it. Got a Pixel 8 pro and can vlog in 4k, temp gets up to 92 F , in same place, same temp in room, Pro-i runs up to 120 F in same scenario.

    • You're going through the same thing I frequently point out with my Xperia PRO-I in numerous videos. The Note 20 Ultra and iPhone 13Pro Max I've been using can keep recording in hot temps while my PRO-I will shut down VideoPro or even the device itself after 1-5 minutes of recording. Its fine in temps below 30 degrees Celsius and will record for long periods. Anything above that and its frustrating to use. It's such a great compact camera smartphone but seems like it was rushed out to take advantage of the pandemic vlogging phase when most people were stuck indoors or had limited movement. The RX100 sensor was notorious for overheating in the early RX100 series digital cameras and Sony still crammed it into the thin Xperia PRO-I frame with a lackluster cooling system!

    • Wow! It's good to hear your Xperia 1ii is still going strong! Are you still getting security updates for it? Last time I had one for my PRO-I was in November 2023. Hopefully the cooling system and zoom camera will be improved for the PRO-I ii. I remember several articles from Sony and other sources mentioning that the PRO-I's 1.0 type sensor was cropped because using all of it required a large lens housing that would have ruined the phone's aesthetics. We can see this in all of the Chinese smartphones using a 1.0 type sensor. Their lens housing usually takes up almost half the phone or extends the area housing the camera system outwards resulting in a non-flush back. I feel Sony would rather have a pleasing and subtle look to their smartphones even if it means sacrificing some performance. I know the focus is on sensor sizes now but the lens setup is equally as important for great pictures and videos. And to take full advantage of the RX100 sensor, the lens system needs to be bigger which means the Xperia PRO-I wider and bulkier to house it. It would also mean Sony would have to move away from the 21:9 aspect ratio for their displays. I think Sony was looking for a quick way to get a vlogging phone out during the pandemic and that's why they grabbed existing parts and slapped them together to come up with the Xperia PRO-I. It might explain why a version ii hasn't came out yet or perhaps theyre trying to version two right this time. But this all speculation and hopefully there will be a PRO-I ii released this year!

    • Youre in the same situation as myself. Hot, humid climate! The main reason to get the Xperia PRO-I is if you're a content creator or photography/videography enthusiast. It excels at that compared to the majority of smartphones. Xperia phones have been notorious for overheating even in their early days. The Xperia 1IV would be better for your gaming needs and you could look into throwing a cooling fan on the back to help with its cooling. I thought about doing this for my Xperia PRO-I when recording video but it takes away its portability factor. I owned most of the Z series and it still would overheat. Theyre just too thin which isn't great for dissipating heat. Just like my Razer Blade laptop, it gets extremely hot. Powerful, hot components in a thin body needs an excellent cooling solution. If you have the budget or are willing to save, the Xperia 1 V and up series make a better all around smartphone which have been reported widely to have a much improved cooling system.

    • Thank you for bringing this up! I was planning on doing a top 5 reasons not to buy this phone but got sick with COVID. I'm also waiting a little longer to see if I will still get security updates this month and longer. There are some negative things about this device such as short OS updates, the speakers, fingerprint sensor, and connections. The display is fine. I haven't had any issues with it unlike my Note 20 Ultra and S20 Ultra. However, the 21:9 aspect ratio can be a bit slim and difficult to type for someone like myself with large hands. Don't worry about the processors. Even the Snapdragon 865 on my Note 20 Ultra is still fast and smooth. If your priorities are excellent OS and security updates, display, hardware, I recommend going with Samsung or Apple. There are better smartphones out there from Chinese companies but the issue is their OS and security update support. But if you want a camera centric smartphone and files with room you can work with in post editing, for sure Sony Xperia smartphones. Unfortunately we can't have everything, that's why at one time I used both a Note 10 Plus and Xperia 1!! Once I got deeper into photography and videography, I decided to stick with Xperia smartphones. I suggest making a list of the features that are the most important to you and will use on a daily basis. Then find a device that meets your requirements. I hope this helpful for you!

    • Sony is the worst in business in terms of OS and security updates regardless of the price of the phone. Xperia Pro-I won't get Android 14 and security updates will be finished this year. Sad reality of having a Sony smartphone. For comparison I have the same year Oppo Find phone and it's updated to Android 14.

    • @@victorrumyantsev3718 Yes even my Samsung Note 20 Ultra is receiving security updates and was updated to Android 13. Sony Xperia flagship phones are a niche device and in the past few years aimed at content creators. For myself it does very well at it compared to my past Samsung phones and the iPhone 13PRO Max I've been using. If someone wants a well balanced smartphone such as from other companies, the Xperia line isn't for them. In 2024, it's best to look at the PRO-I as a compact camera but better than most traditional ones.

Love these little sonys Actually I'd think that the 888 (or even 8gen1 on future sony phones) woul be an issue, these processors are made by Samsung instead of TSMC, and they overheat like crazy. I'm pretty sure my Xperia 5 II will beat the 5 IV in terms of real world performance when I'll compare them... • Wow! You made out well with the Xperia 5 IV! How are you liking Android 14? Any major updates over 13? Yup, the Snapdragon 888 can run hot sometimes but have to really push it. Also being crammed into a slim body like the PRO-I with the RX100 series sensor and processor can make things a bit toasty sometimes. But I've had few issues with the 888, it still runs as great as the day I received the PRO-I. Sony did an excellent job tuning it which is something a lot of reviews fail to point out. They focus too much on the specs instead of actual daily use. I'm confident I could go a few more years and it will still perform with few hiccups.

  • How about temp when using camera?

    @VanNguyen-cr6ns@VanNguyen-cr6nsАй бұрын
    • Yes, that's an issue for myself when its 30 degrees Celsius plus. I mentioned at the end of the video I'm supposed to make another video about the 5 reasons why its not a good idea to buy in 2024 (but been so busy with fitness related stuff recently!). I've brought up rapid overheating when using the cameras in high temps frequently in my other videos, so it would have been on that top 5 list. But under 30 degrees Celsius, no issues with the camera system.

      @VanNguyen-cr6ns@VanNguyen-cr6nsАй бұрын
    • You're welcome! Not a problem. If outdoors, in the sun & 30C +, within 1-2 minutes. If inside recording video with a lot of lights, usually within 5 minutes. It does best when there's a breeze to cool it down or in the shade where it can go up to 10 minutes before overheating warnings and other issues. The RX100 derived sensor for the 24mm lens is notorious for running hot in those camera bodies (my ZV1 gets hot really fast recording 4k outdoors in the sun or indoors with lights). Stick it inside a thin, metal body with the Snapdragon 888 and subpar cooling setup for them, will overheat quickly in hotter temps. I have no issues recording in 27C and below temps outdoors, but best to keep it under shady or breezy areas. You could strap a gaming fan to it as well but may be a bit bulky for recording videos and taking pics handheld.

This is a great device for cooler climates, not hot and humid ones. I'm just throwing this out there and don't know if this applies to the Xperia PRO-I. Sony tests their cameras performance at 25 degrees C according to side notes for some of their camera advertisements.

Their products have a cool, balanced aesthetic to them and they like to try new things few other companies would dare. Do you remember their DSC QX-10 and 100 attachable camera lens? Basically took the lens and sensor from some of their digital cameras and adapted it so they could be attached to your smartphone. They remind me of what Sony did with the Xperia PRO-I. They may not have had mainstream success but for sure an evolution of them will appear in a future product.

I haven't heard anything reliable about the Xperia 1VI. And by the time that one is released, yes it's better to go with that one over the PRO-I. The Xperia PRO-I by then would be best used as a compact camera with a large display, touch screen and instant upload to social media which many traditional digital cameras still lack now. Also it can record 4k@120fps in HDR from the main camera which only a few digital cameras can do.

I feel Samsung does better as a daily smartphone but when it comes to mimicking a digital camera, the Sony Xperia line does it the best. When I went back to using digital cameras, the Xperia series helped me ease into them without being overwhelmed by the numerous buttons and menu settings. I was waiting for my main lens to come back from Sony and finally received it last month. But the two that will make my top 5 list is the overheating when using the camera system and no security updates after two years. In 2024, it's best to view this device as a compact camera with a large, touch display and ability to upload pics and vids quickly online. Most digital cameras still struggle with a small display and a fast, easy way to upload content online. It also makes an excellent lightweight vlogging camera.

  • Is there will be no Sony Xperia PRO II?

    @bazvis@bazvis5 ай бұрын
    • Right now it looks like there will not be. I have a feeling the Xperia PRO-I was an experiment by Sony to test out 1.0 type sensors in a smartphone body. They seem to have better results and success with the IMX989 sensor found in most 1.0 type sensor phones currently. Also their new sensor in the Xperia 1V appears to be produce similar and sometimes better results than the Xperia PRO-I. I was holding out for an PRO-I ii and that they would stick with the RX100 sensor but use all of it. But that would require a larger lens and they still need to add ultra wide and zoom lenses resulting in a very large camera housing which goes against Sony's design principles for smartphones. If youre thinking of a successor to the Xperia PRO-I, I think the Xperia 1V is an excellent replacement, it seems to have fixed many of the issues it had. I've recently seen some news an Xperia PRO-II will be released next year with a multiple aperture adjustment ring around the camera housing. However, I've been seeing rumors since 2022 an Xperia PRO-II was supposed to be released with two 1.0 type sensors but here we are close to 2024 and nothing so far. So I don't know if these are concepts that didn't pan out or someone just trying to get views to their social media account...

      @bazvis@bazvis4 ай бұрын
    • @@bazvisI wouldn't believe the hype a smartphone can take pics and vids like DSLRs. It's very generalized and there are so many different types. What I've noticed comparing my Sony Xperia's, Samsung Notes and iPhone 13 Pro Max to my Sony ZV1 and ZVE-10 is that sometimes they will produce similar quality, but it's not consistent. Also, once you view them on a larger display such as on computers and TV's, you can really see they have a long way to go to produce "DSLR" content consistently. The manufacturers and some reviewers that claim this aren't lying, but they're not giving us the whole picture. At least tell us which DSLR's to compare them too!!! (Sony did with the Xperia 1 V). I recommend the Xperia 1 V for the majority of people. It has a better cooling system, brighter display (essential if you will use it in sunlight), better speaker system and a larger battery. Sony also claims it takes pics similar to its full frame cameras (but I would caution against believing that until you've tried it yourself!). From the reviews I've seen for the 1 V, I don't see a significant difference in picture and video quality compared to the PRO-I except at night where the 1V's improved night mode is better. The Xperia PRO-I still performs great for 2024 and keeps up with most flagship smartphones from the past several years for daily usage. It also has a mechanical dual aperture main camera which helps to control excess light since it can close down to f4.0. You can also adjust the background blur. I recommend it if you're a fan of Sony's digital cameras and want a smartphone version of their RX100 series (you also get a larger display for the cam/vid apps which is very helpful!). Also buy it if you want one of the best looking devices around. It's been holding steady at a price of $999 so it's more affordable than the Xperia 1 V. However, I've seen the global version 1 V for the same price for a few months now on Amazon. Hopefully someone can lend me a Sony Xperia 1 V so I can do a comparison for both of them to really see which one does pics and vids better!
