3D printers have advanced a lot in the last few years. Becoming easier to learn how to use & maintain. You can buy a fairly easy to use & maintain for as low as $300 or $1500+ going down as low as $100 that require some skill to maintain & use. What you can make is largely limited by your imagination. I've enjoyed making things and learning how the process works & making improvements on my machine.

At least you got into it with a good printer. I spent 6 years fighting with different ender3s. Its, only been recently that 3d printing has been about making stuff and not just diagnosing why the machine isn't working. Ever since I got my P1S I haven't turned on either of my enders.
yep, now printers are coming out that offer a true OOTB printing experience it's a completely different game. I never use my Ender 3 because it's so much hassle, I've just bought a Qidi and I've already got 3 or 4 projects I can't wait to start working on knowing that the chances of random failure are significantly reduced
Bambu lab P1’s? What printer would you recommend for me to start on? For small projects like tool holders etc?
@@danieljerloew there are a lot of good options now, but honestly the Bambu printers have been great for me. The P1s is great. From what I can tell the smaller A1 is great and not super expensive.
@@danieljerloew Highly recommend the Bambu Lab P1P or P1S. The P1S is only $100 more and is enclosed which opens up so many more possibilities for different filaments. I'm seriously considering ordering another P1S.

3d printers, CNC's, and proper software give anyone the ability to be a manufacturer. It's pretty cool.
They are even more fun if you design stuff. I lost track of my totality of 3D printed designs years ago. Gizmos for the security industry, maths art containers, makita battery holders, hydrofoil models for moulds for carbon fibre hydrofoils, flexible vacuum nozzle for vehicle cleaning, fan covers, custom resin infusion cores, that's some of my categories.
I bought a ender 3 v3 just before Christmas 2023, I have a bigger one coming on Friday. I didn't "need" one, now I am going to have two.
so cool to see your 3d printing adventure. if you wanna continue organizing all of the things, I'd suggest looking up the Gridfinity system, for drawers and boxes and such it's super cool storage

sheet metal stamping dies are the good use of 3d printed parts too. you gotta try that out :)
I have a resin 3d printer. I use it often to make one, to two time use custom leather stamps. For example if someone wants a name, or simple design, on a leather wallet or sheath, it's easy to print one off and stamp it.
I started with Creality Ender 3's and those were fun to learn on. 3D printers, and specifically the Bambu Lab machines have come so much close to being appliances that just work out of the box. I have do so many functional prints for my home workshop and my commercial brewery that it makes life so much better for both. They can be great for trinkets if that's what you want, but functional items can make life so much better in very little time or money. I use TinkerCAD for much of my design work. It is basic, but has the ability to import existing STL's for modification, which is my current favorite use.
Welcome to the community. 3D Printing prototypes has come a long way in the last few years. It is preferred before spending money and wait time for injection molding only to find out you need to revise and start the process again. Lots of time and money saved for mass manufacturing. Also companies like Slant 3D will manufacturer anything 3D printed in smaller scale, from a few to thousands of parts.
Don't forget about organizing drawers, bits, pens, hardware, etc. Small to medium learning curve for design. If you have a kid in high school or university you can get enhanced fusion 360 for free for each year of edu.
Totally agree that 3D Printing is usefull and isn't just for useless toys like benchy's and the like. I got my first 3D Printer mid 2016 and have enjoyed designing and using the machine ever since. About a year ago I asked my nephew if he wanted one of my old 3D printers, and he said yes. He seemed to be very interested in it, and due to the machine having some issues I decided to buy him a new 3D printer, which ended up being his birthday present as it was close to his birthday at the time. He has since payed for the machine by printing out items and selling them, mainly being the shopping troller tokens and letters that you put on your key chain.
just started selling a product i invented and had to pick up another printer to keep up, my first printer finally paid itself off after a few years of hobby printing. i'll probably have a dozen of these some day.
Never wanted one. Refused, even! Don’t want to fool with something else to maintain! Within 6 months I accumulated 3 of them and have had a fun time just printing upgrades and changing firmwares just to to make them print faster.
I'm a maker and RC car hobby and both hobbies could use a good 3D printer.
On the 3d printed Belt clip. I think you printed it on the wrong Axis. Print it on its side so the strands build up around the rounded par. It looked like you printed it flat the way it looked broken...
You don't "need" a 3D printer. Until you get one... and find out you can use it for. So. Many. Things!! ;-)
Well let me just say since I found your design for the sanding block I had made my own 3d file but i never got it right. Please post it forsale on cults 3d I would gladly pay for the stl file!

As someone who recently got into 3d printing, let me add this... If you want 3d prints to be the hobby, and not the printer itself, buy the Bambu labs printers.
I'll second this. I've been on both sides of this story. I've had printers that I've had to spend hours tinkering with the settings just to get the damn thing to print. Bought a Bambu and I am able to find or create a model, send it to the printer and it just works. So much better when you are prototyping and doing multiple iterations of a design.
I've been thinking about getting myself one as well. What is a decent quality level to start with? What do I need to run it? Laptop etc? What features should one offer in relation to the knife maker?
if you are just getting into 3D printing I'd look at Bambu lab printers, specifically the A1 mini is a solid option that just had a 50 dollar price drop. while your waiting for it id watch some YT on the basics of 3D printing to understand enough to get printing when you receive your printer of choice
Are there different formulae of filament? How well do 3D printed objects do in direct sunlight over time? I am thinking boat fittings. Stainless steel is not the right stuff for a lot of things... Of course that comes with the next question of how strong is this stuff? does it compare to machinable nylon (not sure what the right name is for the stuff) or even fibre glass objects? How good compared to aluminum.

depends if you like tinkering or not, ive used some very expensive machines of many varieties but found that most often i use an ender 3 pro.
As a tool, a Bambu, the P1S and X1C if you want to print nylon and ABS, the A1 series if you don't. Prusa's aren't bad, but they are slower. As a hobby, pick your poison or hell build your own from a voron kit.
If you want to learn printer repair / modification - buy an ender. If you just want to print things, buy a bambulab.
Today the K1 is a good alternative to the Bambu and at a better price
There are filaments resistant to chemicals ex petg, no need to reprint funnels. Just use proper plastic.
For the spout (and many other 3D printed devices made for chemicals) it can be pretty easy to just assume they'll all melt eventually, however the resistance to the chemicals is all dependent on what solvent and plastic you are using. Acetone for instance will completely dissolve ABS and will make other's like PLA and PETG soft and gummy so you want to use a different material that isn't adversely affected by that solvent. For acetone you would ideally want to use polyethylene, polypropylene, or fluoroplastics (Teflon, Tefzel, etc.) however these aren't at all common printing materials so the next best one would be Nylon since it is fairly resistant to most solvents including acetone. Generally just do a bit of research on what plastics are resistant to the solvent you want to design for, find the best one that is printable, and make stuff to your hearts content!
Started about 8moths ago. Loooot of small things printed around the house. The a complete 3M versflo and conections to other masks. Just that made the the investment of the printer pay it self back. Now a Im also printing parts for Ukraine!

I'm always taken aback when I see a maker/craftsman using an iPad. It's an overpriced, handholding walled garden.
It's a tool that works reliably.
