  • Such a good momma hesitated to check on others. I had a momma raccoon come to live in my shed . She had three babies.i fed her all winter and let her stay. I asked her not to poop in shed. And she didn't. It was all good. It is their world too. Live and let live.

    • Exactly, we destroy their environment and give them no other choice.. It’s illegal here to move active bird nests. I wish the same could be said for more animals trying to find a safe place to raise their children.

    • When I was an aerial and satellite engineer, I had some customers who didn't want to pay for me to walk across a 5 storey drop wall to replace their satellite dish (no one else would because dangerous) and had another customer who had a £4000 75" TV, but didn't want to pay us £250 for the wall mount that's built for it. Some customers are bizarre, at least this one was realistic and willing to pay so the rescuers could do their job.

  • It's very reassuring how times and attitudes have changed through the years. I'm in my 70s and when I was young, a raccoon with babies inside a roof may very well not have ended so well. I remember similar situations in my old city neighborhood where raccoons were looked upon as vermin and, if possible, the mother and the babies would have been killed. What do you know, there are some aspects of humanity that have improved over the years! Kudos to the trappers and even the homeowner who allowed a happy ending to this story.

    • I showed my mom this video and she said, “I always wanted a baby raccoon.” And then told me they should’ve put the babies up in a tree. When I asked if they lived in trees, she said yeah, that’s how they (her dad) used to hunt them (adults). When the dogs barking at them in the tree, you shoot em. And then take them home for bbq. 😖

    • @AndreAntoine obviously I don't know your life story but the comment you wrote is just too raw for me to read and move on. There's not a mother alive who doesn't think about their child every day and if your mum has passed then she's watching over you. If she gave you up either she had no choice or she believed you'd be better off. If it seemed like she chose drugs/drink/a man over you then know addiction takes away choices and there's always rock bottom and the realisation that your child was the real treasure. At that point she either carried on to block out the pain or she's had plenty of time to regret her actions. I'm sorry you didn't have the mother you wanted or deserved but the only constructive thing you can do is forgive her - not because you're cool with what took place but so you can begin to put the pain down; there's too much good in you and in life and carrying around hurt and bitterness and rejection uses up too much time and energy. If you can get to that point maybe you can also accept that your mom missed out big time, all the things she never got to do with you or know about you. Any mother would be proud and happy to have you as their son. The next step is to be the mother you never had but needed. To yourself. Whatever you wanted and needed from her. Don't have to go round acting like a mommy 😁, but you do have to look after yourself, forgive yourself if you mess up, see the best of yourself, stand up for yourself, protect yourself and love yourself. Whether you know it or not, you are very much wanted here on earth.

    • Raccoons are predators, too. They will attack pets and even kill them. My little dog (about twenty pounds) was attacked in our fenced yard twice. The first attack landed him in the animal hospital with bites and slashes to his abdominal region. We live in the city and it was by a mama raccoon with babies in the tree next door. In both attacks, my husband heard the commotion and fought off the raccoons. We don't leave the pets out overnight. In each instance, we had let the dogs out briefly for a potty break. Raccoons are cute, but are wild. Don't approach or feed. They can be especially vicious protecting their young.

They needed feeding every 2-3 hours and all had different schedules. Unfortunately I lost 8 of the 9 within 3 weeks. It turned out to be bad kitten formula, it was killing zoo animals too. I got my hands on 2 more orphans because you need at least 3 to release back to the wild. Terribly sad experience but pretty rewarding watching the 3 grow up to be released. It was amazing seeing their natural hunting skills. I would fill a wading pool with minnows. Within a minute they were catching them and soon after that they were catching mice. But these little helpless racoon babies.... incredibly beautiful. And much gratitude goes to these kind, understanding humans....who patiently helped to relocate Mama and her babies. For taking the time to move slowly to not scare Mama. To the homeowners, who choose to find caring, experienced people to help relocate their unwelcomed guest. • What was so kind about it? What a stupid comment! You have no idea the fate awaiting those fragil babies. Did the mother really find a safe place with now four new borns in her care? As far as we know they may have been eaten by dogs or some evil cat. It takes time to find a safe place for four new born babies. Do you believe it can be done with the snap of a finger? These people should go to jail for what they did!

    • I've never seen a wildlife relocation company. I live in Illinois and one day I applied for a company that had a name something along the lines of "Super happy fun time lovey dovey animal services." I worked there for 2 weeks and never encountered anything besides bugs, mice or rats. One day we get called out to a house where there was a mother raccoon and her babies in the attic/rafters of a fully finished heated garage. Before we started doing anything like capturing them I asked my coworker what would become of them once we have them. I nonchalantly asked in front of the customer. I didn't think anything of it because the whole interview they kept blowing smoke up my ass about how the most important qualities they are looking for in a tech is compassion and how this is a job STRICTLY for animal lovers and went to great lengths to avoid bringing up killing the animals. Anyways, he had no choice but to tell us and he explained that Illinois law requires the animals be euthanized. The woman and I were horrified. My coworker was furious with me, almost irrationally so. He was so giddy on the way to the job I swear it was like he was really looking forward to it. I recall thinking how odd it was to see him like that because he was normally extremely monotonous in overall vibe up until that point. I quit on the spot and she refused the service. She and I stayed in contact and after a few weeks the raccoons were gone on their own and she paid me to clean out the area and animal-proof her home. Years later she hasn't had any issues. I understand that there are laws for a reason, though I may disagree with them. If they had just been upfront with me I would never have agreed to work there and it would have never gone that far. The funniest part was when the person who interviewed me called me later that day to tell me I was fired, I laughed and mentioned that's great because I quit on the spot when I learned they murdered all the animals. Like a scene in a movie they had a meltdown over the phone and said that they're the boss and I'm not allowed to quit so I'm fired. Seriously psychotic people. Glad I noped out that bitch.

    • @Digby Dooright You're a good person for allowing them to stay , this animal removal business does a good job removing them but what happens after , they wash their hands from it. Like they did a good deed by giving the babies back to the mother but now where is she suppose to go that's as good as the home they were evicted from. Let us take your lands and build our houses on it, then if they find them in that house for whatever reason then they need to get the heck out all the babies and mother , go elsewhere and fend for yourselves, we wash our hands of whatever happens After they're removed. That attic didn't even have an entrance hence why they had to cut into the ceiling , that section of the room was empty , was it that much of a nuisance to hear some raccoon noises that it was all of a sudden a must to cut into it and remove them like a cancer? No heart with some people.

Trust me I love raccoons as much as the next person, I really do, but if it comes to humans having a home and raccoons obviously I’m going to support humans. Especially when there’s already plenty of homeless humans. And if raccoons are causing danger to a human home and subsequently to themselves then yes they should find somewhere else. I called a company that specializes in removing wild animals and they told me they would trap them and euthanize them because it was not legal for them to "relocate" them somewhere else....so didn't hire the company and I just let them be. They didn't do any damage and eventually moved on on their own. If they had been in the attic it would have been a different story, but I appreciate how you were able to relocate them.

I have had raccoons living in my attic (on and off) for nearly 20 years with no problems. There is a mama and her babies residing in the attic as I type! She even comes out during the daytime to get the food that I put out for her to eat so that she will have plenty of milk for her babies. I named her Rachel! :)

My only suggestion: You were so careful with the babies, but do not forget those baby raccoons were in a warm, cuddly place until you guys barged in. Keep the babies warm after rescue, why not use a basket rather than a canvas duffle bag to retrieve them? Moms keep their babies warm, fed, and safe. Rewatch your film again and imagine yourself as the RUNT of the litter you rescued.

It should have been minimal contact and put right into a box. The "bag" causes the babies to be smashed together against the pressure of the bag and their own bodyweight.
