  • Yes, raccoons are very cute in their looks and in theirs ways. They seem to be even more intelligent than either cats or dogs and, because of that, I'm sure it's more challenging to keep one because they're so mischievous -- I wouldn't be surprised if they could learn to open a child-proof pill bottle before your child can, with those very dexterous little hands they have.

Others say that all the apes except "chimps and orangutans" have them. The reason is because their thumbs are so short that they can only reach their palms and not the others fingers. • Here in The Netherlands we call raccoons, wasberen. "Was", in Dutch, is the first person indicative of the verb, "wassen", (to wash). Beren is the plural of the noun, "beer", bears. ("beer" is pronounced the same as in English - bear. Not like the lovely malty beverage 😂) So raccoons are, "washing bears" because they look like little bears, that are always washing their food with their hands. It's really a charming translation 😀.

    • They can kill a cat almost any size dog and put you in the emergency room. And you would have to have a lot of shots, including rabies shots, which are horrible, if one even scratched you enough to bleed. When camping, they tell you to never approach a bear or raccoon. I dealt with both while camping far from civilization, and they're both scary. The raccoon tore through our food and we had to stay in the tent. He even tried to open our tent, which would have been dangerous. In San Francisco, one kept trying to get into my apartment. Even climbed up to the chimney and tried tearing off the grate on top. I had a dog and two cats inside.

In the mountains nearby the bear tore our camp up and ran with the food. The raccoon circled our tent, sliced it here and there trying to get in, knowing we were in there, and with no food, while we banged some pots and yelled at it, then it yanked so hard it ripped the door part way open. Try being confined in a pup tent with a wild, agressive 40 lb raccoon.

  • I found a baby raccoon in the woods once. I'm taking'bout crawling on his mom, dripping with amniotic fluid, first born. Named him Taz. We raised him with a Rottweiler. One day after school I was doing my homework when I heard the dog hollering in pain. Remember this was before the internet or I'd be rich. I looked in the living room and saw the dog standing on all fours with his head down. I could almost hear him crying. I looked under him and saw Taz on his back, arms and legs spread out with the dogs tongue in his mouth. Once I stopped laughing I separated them and they started rough housing again. They say Rottweilers are very smart. Ours couldn't learn from his own mistakes.😂🤣😀🤣😂

  • From personal experience, I can tell you that raccoons don't make good domestic pets. There is always a point at which their wild nature begins calling them; and they become unmanageable. When they reach that point, the cuteness factor is overshadowed by their almost constant and extremely painful biting. Don't fool yourselves! While their will always be outliers, raccoons are very much WILD ANIMALS! They have yet to be bred sufficiently to become domesticated.
