Boxing is the same now as it was then - sometimes the best face the best, other times they do not. It was the same back then.
Win or lose, Oscar list of big name fights is just astonishing. Whitaker, Trinidad, Camacho, Gatti, Mosley, Chavez, Hopkins, Pacquiao, Vargas, Mayorga, Mayweather, Miguel Gonzalez, Hernandez. Current top boxers probably will only get 4-5 big fights during their whole career due to ducking, different promoters, etc.
Mayorga doesn't count
@@mammymammy8727 mayorga was solid. beat forest twice.
Right de lay Hoya was really bout the smoke

The video is delayed. I realized 10 minutes in 😂
I thought I was the only one 😂 makes it difficult to enjoy
Oscar fought Whitaker at the age of 24, but Tank Davis (25) is too young to fight Loma or any other champion...?

Amen Rest In Peace Champion Pernell 🙏
I don't know how anyone can claim robbery over Oscar's well earned victory. Not only did he outwork Whitaker, he also frustrated him with his skills. Oscar was beating him to the punch in many of the exchanges while landing with more authority-- and he'd throw rapid fire flurries that put Whitaker on the defensive and out of position to counter. Simply put, Oscar prevented him from executing a winning gameplan.
Californio I don’t know what you were watching. Yes Oscar did. beat Whitaker to the punch in SOME rounds but mostly the fight was pretty even. For every exchange Oscar won Whitaker won one as well. Not saying it was a robbery but it could have gone either way and was much closer then what you are making it out to be.
Filippo Cedroni I agree, decision shouldn’t have been unanimous either.
@Jayson Sosa Boxing he knocked him down, that's 10-8 round
I don’t what u’ll watched! I had Pernell winning 8 rounds to 4. The commentators were horrendous! I don’t know how many times Pernell would catch Oscar with that left hand and they didn’t say anything.

Yeah, that's because they're spinning the narrative of the fight!!! SMH
Pernells best shot was that headbutt in the 2nd rd 🤣
cant help but see the Ryan Garcia comparisons when I look at young oscar, hope he keeps his head on like oscar did and have a great career.
other than physical appearance they have nothing else in common
I don’t see the comparisons at all
@@rellbandoo6572 Im speaking on crowd appeal, ticket selling ability and skill set. In fact Ryan is more talented than Oscar when it comes to boxing skill set oscar was just physically bigger than most welterweights.
Oscar was a Great Fighter Garcia Is all Hype
@@Legendarychamp Oscar is a much better boxer than Ryan was at the same age. We're just gonna have to wait and see
I was always told that Pernell was Robbed, but watching it now I can see he didn't do much offensively to Win.
I think he was rob
Pernell didn't do much of anything. He got clipped in the early rounds and stunned and basically shut his O down after that. His corner even warned him to stop clownin around or he was gonna lose the fight but he wouldn't stop. Pernell chose to clown more than fight and it cost him the fight. Mind you it may have saved him from getting KO'd too so who knows.
Caliph B. Oscar delahoya killed him
It's one of those strategic fights, that can be judged one way or the other..I never thought it was a robbery, but a hard fight to judge, although Sweet Pea was the champ and had to be taken decisively
Only people who understand how boxing is scored and aren’t blind to Oscar swelling up Pernell’s face can see Oscar won a decision. Wasn’t a robbery at all.
Sweet pea played around to much looking out into the crowd not listening to his corner men , waited to long !
paid 300+ milions to canelo, cant upload a fight with the right audio lol. upload this fight again please
Óscar was landing the more important blows and pernell was barely throwing
@Stephen Curry MVP yes. He got outclassed. He didn't even win a round until the 6th. His own corner even told him that 😂
Whitaker was way to defensive he is an amazing fighter but a lot of times he abused on the defense and didn't throw anything at all
@@WillAnderson3rd no
@@WillAnderson3rd because they know the score before hand you are absolutely delusional if you think de la hoya won

I trip on how Pernell acted shocked at the decision.
How so, he landed 60 to 70 more punches and lead in most categories, ppl say anything🤣🤣
Greatest referee of all time
By far, no doubt
Funny how fighters make the best referees... Maybe they should be judges too
I remember seeing this fight in my teens. LOL, looking at Whitaker act surprised that he lost when it wasn't controversial in any way.
Ur delusional
Hopefully it's in HD so I can pull out my projector to watch this fight again. It's been a long time. 📽
Dont know where but I recognise you from another comment section, a name like that isn't hard to forget.
The announcers announcing the fight 1round ahead of the actual fight...😂😂😂😂😂 great fight THANKS..
Recordaba poco de la pelea gracias DAZN!!
Sweet Pea
Puffiness on the eyes of both fighters? Whitaker's eye was closed for about 7 rounds, De La Hoya wide open.
The ref looks like he's talking about nothing, maybe it's because the audio isn't in sync...
I’ve never understood why people feel so sorry for Whitaker. Every single time he didn’t win people make excuses.
Saying he got robbed when he got robbed isn't excuse making.
They gave Oscar points for swinging and missing
Well I'm not sure with the other fights, but he definitely did get robbed with Chavez. The whole Mexican crowd bood because they also knew that was supposed to be a W for Whitaker.
I had Oscar winning this but should watch it again
What's up with the audio!? Pernell should've won this fight too!
Whitaker moves were a pleasure to watch. And De La Hoya was much more in his prime here then when he fought Mayweather.
Mayweather never fought anybody in their prime!
@@lennyurena4927 stop the cap Diego, Ricky hatton, manfready
@@lennyurena4927 he called out Oscar and Mosley way before his fights with them but they ducked him cuz he was a young phenom and they were (especially Oscar) the cash cows, plus Oscar is naturally 3-4 weight classes bigger than Floyd and still got that work.
@@bondsgoat25 De La Jollla started as a Jr Lightweight. So not naturally bigger than Mayweather. In this fight with Sweet Pea, he muved up to welterweight. Pernell is also formerly a lightweight. One of the greatest lightweights ever. Him amd Duran. Would have been special.
@@jmc0369 ah you don’t know, ok here it is, Oscar “technically” started at 130 that much is true.. but he’s spoken about how he starved himselves for weeks before the fight to make 130 then as soon as he got his first title fight, he moved up. It was all just to pad his resume to get a extra championship at a lower weighclass Oscar is not naturally a 130 pounder by any stretch. Floyd walked into the ring at 136 when he was at JRLW, Oscar walked into the ring at around 150-160, which is insane.
This is when Oscar was A+ quality

I def had ODLH winning. Sweet Pea was just not active enough. Despite the knockdown, I didn’t see Sweet Pea do enough to take no more than 3 rounds (knockdown round included).
I remembered this fight during my senior highschool days. Pernell was so defensive, elusive & not easy to hit. If pernell could have countered every missed punch of oscar with a pacman-like combination, oscar would have been in big trouble.
lol, had Pernell tried that, he would have ended up on the floor. There is a reason he fought how he fought.

53:23 De La hoya threw 9 consecutive punches, missed all of them. Great defense by Whitaker . Im huge Chavez fan but 17 years later after their fight, I’ll admit that I saw my hero lost against Whitaker. Probably the worst Chavez performance that I ever saw. He couldn’t find this guy. I wonder who would win between Mayweather and Whitaker 🤔
That would be a dream fight
Wow id say floyd by split tho. Depends what age. If were talking a 33 year old floyd best floyd.
Both at lightweight please!

Wowww Pernel W. Amazing defense. Impresionante
Pernell held the whole fight! It seems like he didn't come to win. 7-5 Oscar!
I was born in 93 so im 30 yrs young w boxing but i like O DLH at 145 weight n him walkinh around at 155 or 160 Ive just been watching him to revist the past. Also been watching Roy Jones jr. Oscars passion for boxing is visible. Oscar was a icon in Mexico from 93-0-
They threw Golden Boy to the wolf's early now the young fighters hide in fight bums smh
That's how fighters were back then. They wanted to face the best and didn't duck and hide avoiding the true threats. Floyd really set a bad example.
Which is why ODLH is such an ATG. Even if he lost a few, he had the balls to fight: -Pac -Floyd -B Hop -Mosley -Gatti -Trinidad -JCC -Whitaker
@@Flexb123 Floyd fought all the best fighters available from 130 up to 147-154. Yes it's true once he became the cash cow he made sure whoever he fought he got the maximum amount of money he could, but that was him being his own business man as well as a fighter, something most fighters never have the chance to do. Ya'll really need to check Floyd resume and look at all the fighters he beat. He fought everyone and won.
Flexb123 floyd have always fought the best. There is barely any bad contenders on his resume after his first title. He values his 0 too much and if you are talking about that you are righ but floyd never ducked anybody.
E K I had him beating both Mosley in the second fight and Trinidad
I think Oscar won this fight ,i liked Sweet Pea but to win this fight he needed more offensives in his arsenal. Offense always scores more than defense except if u make him pay by counters, Sweet didnt have enought
This will always be a classic! Fun fight.

An older Sweat Pea really beat a prime Oscar. A prime Mayweather won a split decision against a older Oscar.

if Pernell was more active maybe he would win the fight. fight was too close and he wasn't throwing enough.
This will be nice to watch together
Pernell was slightly past his prime in this fight. He also had a knockdown in this fight. I have this fight a draw. De la hoya a much bigger fighter than whitaker was. Whitaker was small taking on huge dudes at times.
Whitaker was slightly past his prime for this yes and it showed - plus DeLaHoya was right on the money. Moved up a weight to for this fight.
@@mlh4711 I actually think Whitaker should have been given the decision since he was the champion and de la hoya either drew with him or barely won and from my knowledge you have to take it from the champion
Whitaker stock went up even in this defeat
I did to should been a draw
@@onlininfoit’s math
These kinds of fights are why boxing as a sport is a problem. There’s really no clear winner here, despite what you’ll read in all the comments. With the judges being forced to JUDGE a winner for each round, we’re forced to accept an unsatisfying result. Judges should be able to score rounds as draws when there is no definitive winner. These kind of fights need to happen a second or third time until a definitive winner emerges. If after three fights there isn’t a definitive winner, we can all be happy we saw three great fights and move on.
Nice man look at this quality.

yh lol and look what it did to Mayweather, made him 50 - 0
Great bout in many aspects
The commentators said Hoya won first five rounds lol. Sweat Pea clearly won round 5. He won round three too and give first 1 or 4 to either party.
Great fight.

Barbaros analistas son los MEJORES del mundio mundia!
What year did the fight happen?
What fight were these commentators watching? They were acting like Oscar was scoring every punch while he’s swinging at AIR! In one of the the middle rounds, Sweet Pea landed 7 out of 9 jabs, then landed a perfect straight left and the announcers said NOTHING! I had Sweet Pea winning this fight 8 rounds to 4. 1. 10-9 2. 9-10 3. 10-9 4. 10-9 5. 10-9 6. 10-9 7. 10-9 8. 9-10 9. 10-8 10. 9-10 11. 10-9 12. 9-10

What is the best round in this fight?
DLH was a helluva fighter. Got robbed against Mosley 2 and Trinidad and mayweather, but that didn’t stop him to be great🇲🇽🇲🇽🥊
it would also be nice to re-upload the video of the Bernard Hopkins - Jermaine Taylor fight
Got more respect for Whitaker than I do Mayweather this man truly boxed his opponents while still in their prime
A young Floyd wanted a prime Oscar and Mosley… they both said nah and ducked because they we’re comfortable we’re they were as the cash kings, Floyd surpassed them and did the same thing. Also don’t compare a guy who’s whole imagine is being undefeated to other fighters, there’s reasons why dudes with nothing to lose (record wise) take fights while others don’t.
@@bondsgoat25 bro Mayweather was in the super featherweight division at 130 in 1998 de la hoya was in welterweight and Moseley in lightweight not only that Mayweather didn't move up in weight until 2002
@@RM_2423 obviously when Floyd was younger at 130 the timelines and the weight classes didn’t add up, in order to fight either man but he would have and wanted to fight them way earlier then he did. He wanted the Shane fight in 05 after Floyd had come to welterweight, Shane said his toof hurt and he had trips he wanted to go on… then they ended up fighting half a decade later when Floyd was the money fight and shane was old! And As for Oscar, Floyd had been campaigning for that fight for years, before it happened both during Floyd’s welterweight tenure and just before. And while Oscar wouldn’t have been in his absolute prime, a 31 year old Oscar wouldn’t look bad on a resume especially given that’s he’s the naturally much bigger fighter!
Floyd seen what Pete did to Roger and said nah dawg lol
@@bondsgoat25 floyd said a lot of things he didn't do. he called out tsyuzu then never fought him when they were in the same division

The sound isn't synched up right.
This was a much appreciated match for the fans. I’m glad that they fought each other in their prime. Rip Sweet Pea and gold bless Golden Boy 👍
Well, back then they fought for the fans. Sure, it will always about the money, but back then it was still very much like the gladiator. " Win the crowd, you win your freedom! ". They knew, win the crowd, economically they'd be fine.
PERNELL was in his prime...
To think that Whitaker and Mayweather almost collapse with each other
@DAZN sound is way off sync
I got 114 to 113 for whitaker. It could be a draw if it wasn't for the knockdown. Close fight. A lot of show boating for whitaker. And i dont blame the judges why they have delahoya ahead of their scorecard. It's just that they saw oscar is more active although not landing punches. Mostly landed in the arm or missed. But it could go either way. But my score is 114 to 113 for pernell.
Sounds like you were watching a different fight
The sound is out of sync.
Ray Leonard and Tommy Hearns turned this run of the Mill weight division into the Glamour second only to and at times more interesting than the Heavyweight Division , Division . Not only did those 2 fighters uphold the welterweight Title , but helped shine more light on the up n coming defenders , but as they got older their caused vacuum opened up opportunities for the likes of Donald Curry , Terry Norris and a host of others . During its initial glory era of the 80’s the Motor City Hit Man & Sugar Ray pulled other Champions of other weight divisions into spotlight Big Fights like Marvin Hagler n Roberto Duran. This fight here wouldn’t be nearly as big as it was w/o those 2 Champion Fighters and their camps of great people around them like Emanuel Steward and the one and only Angelo Dundee for starters and on both sides so many more. A salute to those 2 pioneers .!!!!!!!!
classic!
