My favourite thing about Rogla's vuelta performance was him casually rolling back through the finish as all the other favourites were battling to reach the line. Utter dominance
With that Kuss smile too 👌👌👌
It was kinda dumb though. Looked dangerous aswell.
My favorite of the year was probably MvdP climbing to the finish of Strade but that was a bit too short for this list.
That final kick blew my mind
Came here to say ^this^. If you are talking thermonuc. then MvP's utter torching of the person you called the best puncheur fits the bill more so then any example you gave where he put out nearly 15w per kg for 20sec and 7.69 for the entire climb.
Ah you see that's because it's beyond the measurement that can be considered thermonuclear
I think it's because it's in it's own category of Thermobiblical
Came here to say this. Unforgivable 🏮
He probably didn't do crazy watts, but my favorite climbing performance of the year has to have been Caruso attacking Ineos on stage 20 of the Giro. Sure, it didn't end up impacting the race, but seeing him, Bardet, Storer and Bilbao ripping down that valley and onto Alpe Motta was pure theater
Hours of spectacle you're so right. From the initial attack just been exciting to watching Ineos start to lose grip in the valley so the began sacrificing more men to hold it. Watching both groups double back on one another up the switchbacks. Martinez losing the wheel on the final descent slowing the group down. Caruso clapping Bilbao on the back. The best day of racing this year imo
@@endaohalloran6649 I'd forgotten about the clap on the back! - that was a proper, classic Giro moment. So much passion in that ride
The Giro this year seemed non-stop attacking or full gas almost every stage.
And he was only gregario for Landa.
That is a spectacular performance, but it was a decent, not climb.
roasting aside, i find it fascinating how elite human body can hold 4 w/kg for hours, 6 w/kg for like an hour but 8 w/kg? 5 min good luck.
Yeah, it is not a linear relationship at all.
@@cyclingboss469 It is 100% linear, but I do know what you mean.
At the risk of starting a scientific discussion in KZhead comments its not linear, the power and energy systems work together and their application of power and force and transition between the two is exponential.
@@average_aussie4709 Bah, yes, you're right, and I need to not try and remember maths in public at 2am on a Saturday morning.
@RealSweetKid w⚓
this has *got* to become a recurring year's end video, best of the recap themes by far imo
Always love it when LR says Thermonuclear
These videos are extra fun to watch when you actually saw all the stages
In my part of Canada it is currently zero degrees Celsius with light freezing rain. Thanks for the happy summer memories from a wonderful year of racing.
Can't believe MDVP at Strade Bianche didn't crack the top 10! What a stacked list!
Yeah when I think of a Thermonuclear attack that will always come to mind. Alaphillippe looked like he was going backwards in comparison.
I think it's about the definition of "climb". Strade bianche's climbs are really short, 2-400 m. So you could say that yes, the mur de huy can be considered a climb, being 1.3km, but that the climbs in Siena and around cannot. We then all of course agree: MVDP attack in Siena (1300 watts...btw!) was thermonuclear :)
Growing up during the cold war, seeing the word THERMONUCLEAR filled me with dread. Now I get a warm, happy feeling. Pidcock will podium this list next year. See you all in 12 months!* * (Subject to Terms and Covid)
Can't wait to see where Vingegaard's Col du Granon ranks this year. It absolutely broke Pogacar. TJV were huge at that stage with those 1-2s.
That Roglic v Bernal stage was racing - and viewing - par excellence. Undoubtedly number 1 on the list, daylight 2nd.
Hard not to love Portgues Conti scene, essentially cycling from 20 years ago. I am sure W52 stands for the number of Watts you magically gain when you join the team.
It’s a clothing brand xD
this year team rally put on a good show but most years, the foreign teams are completely out of the picture.
Yes indeed. They have "Colombian" problems.
It’s not magically, it’s very scientific :)
or the number of watts you gain from doping with them :)
Honorable mention: LRs doggy on the Andorran trails
Can we get a top 10 sprints video as well? These videos should definitely be a recurring feature at the end of each year!
For me stage 4 Tour of Britain finish up the Great Orme. Wout Van Aert beating Julian Alaphilppe in a dramatic sprint at the top of a 1.8km climb with ramps well over 20%. Two World class riders absolutely shattered at the end.
good list, one of the best of the 2021 highlight takes. As an honorable mention, the battle between WVA and JA up the Great Orme, Stage 4, Tour of Britain. OK, it's not Alpe d'Huez, but it was two top athletes going mano a mano up a double digit grade.
Had to be included!
Mike woods shredding it apart was my fav part of that one
Wow, just when you're sitting in front of the screen being kind of sad that the season is over you come up with such a nice video, chapeau bas, greetings from Luxembourg
Was about to do homework but this changed everything
This morning i had a thermonucliar response clicking this video, spilled my coffee while doing so, thanks!
Was watching your older videos….then I see 25m ago haha clutch.!
Thank you Lanterne Rouge for putting portuguese riders on that list, we as country salute you! In regards to the favorite climb it has to be Pogacar in stage 8 of the tour, the vibe that I had when watching that live was Pogacar had enough and it was time to show who's boss, masterpiece performance.
An excellent compendium of climbs. Your editing on all levels is superb.
I would love to see a top 10 of sprints and lead out from 2021. Keep up the good work, best cycling content on yt !!
Bernal’s performance on the gravel during the Giro was my personal favorite of the year.
please keep the Top Ten 2021 videos coming!!
I really love your videos! Especially when they're longer👍
YES! To more season reviews, great stuff!
This was great. It helps with the gloomy weather to revisit these great climbs. Thanks!
These highlight videos are so good
Rog for prez. Thanks for the great breakdown, LR🔥
I love these reviews in the current flat time between major sports…at least in Australia. Love yr commentary too.
Thanks for the round up. such a spicy year.
Damn, the white Condor of the Pyrenees (saw you eating your breakfast) with another banger. Here is hoping Lantern does a video on the VanDerPoel crazy weave in the gutter at Paris Roubaix. He must have some other crazy cycling tricks in his Encyclopedia to make a list of those.
My god Formolo dying for Pogacar is brings all kinds of emotions every time...
Porte and Tao both tried to go to the front and take over but didn't last a second! Meanwhile Formolo was pulling for a while, it was epic.
Naichaca bloody legend
video of the year.....thanks for this LR
i do enjoy this breakdown
cant wait for top 10 Chernobyl explossion climbing performances 2022
No mention of MVDP at Strade Bianche?
Yeah. That is what I thought and then I just looked at the stats. Via Santa Caterina is only 60 m vert. Muir de Huy is 200 m. I guess he had to draw the line somewhere. Still - Strada was such an awesome start to the season. I hope 2022 is just as good.
The ones that stand out for me are mvdp in Strade, wow that final attack made it look like an elite with the juniors, pog in the first TT at the tour and Bernal on the gravel in the giro
Great summary!!
Great video thanks
Godammit, I was about to go to bed... Oh well
I think that another blast that can be considered is the last km at the stage 9 of the giro, where Egan makes a bombastic attack and wins
On the gravel no less! His MTB career sure served him well there.
@@andrew7taylor Loved that gravel stage!
Caruso on Alpe Motta has to be an honourable mention. So, so good.
thanks for the portuguese action!!
No history of peds in Portugal but that is a rippin tailwind pushing those boys!
Crazy thing is you are right. nut not one of these climbers won a world tour stage. Like masnada knew descent in bergemo to catch pog the portuguese only have so many climbs really elite cat 1 climbs it definitely helps the rest is interesting almost every year some climbing performance turns up just scoarching. Maybe not having alps or dolomites, pyrenees sierra nevada or basque hurts but denmark and dutch climbers. Im portuguese its always been a riddle I think they have one g'd up day in the local races. not elite consistent fitness yet Almeida has ingredients sadley I have to agree your original point is likely for those random ludicrous times. Dumoulin is dutch, jonas is from denmark they can just push the watts. You can actually do math calculations to train for hillclimbs with unique repeats of gear ratios and helps if there is wind on flat. Tangent my bad hope almeida breaks the mold hes a grinder cadel style but noy cadel's quality just similar style. the portuguese elite really know their climbs inside and out but get roasted at algarve every year since agostinho still the GOAT of portuguese climbers. Alpe d'huez winner too. Rui Costa tds multiple winner and worlds though slightly controversial, nelson Oliveira has always been workhorse world class TT Reuben his brother I believe hopefully does great too at UAE with Almeida. Sorry didn't want to sound like harsh. Next futbol match at casa Benfica Ill be banned 😂
One of the greater athletes in my opinion was Carlos Lopes of Portugal who at the age of 39 won the Olympic marathon as well as the world cross country running championships…
@@buddhaboy- cristiano Ronaldo and eusebio I think imo are 1and 2. Eusebio was Ronaldo before his time in some ways. Love joao Felix and Bruno Fernandes is playing at high level. That euro winning squad I could sadly name even substitutes lol. Thanks I'll have to check out runner ,the rhino aghostinho was a man's man still farmed while racing he had to keep working with his hands. Amazing work ethic in country: ). 🇵🇹
@@ryanphelan6861 AFAIK Nelson Oliveira has nothing to do with Rui and Ivo Oliveira at UAE. He is from Centro, they're from Norte. I don't think they could do great at UAE. Not on the road, anyway. Their talent lies on the track. Both are European champions already: Ivo in the pursuit, Rui in the scratch.
@@andrew7taylor lead out men you think? thank you for clarifying
Absolutely spot on! For pure entertainment, Pog and JV on MV was good, but from so far out, the Roglic and Bernal show had absolutely everything. Drama, Bernal giving everything, near crashes… what panache!
impressive; very nice. let's see top 10 supernatural performances.
Suggestion: a podcast about the most prominent riders who have retired. Dan Martin, Tony Martin, Greipel, Roche...
I honestly dont know why you would not include Remco Evenepoel Muur van Geraardsbergen in Brussels Cycling Classic
Top 2 performances of the year was Remco in Druivenkoers and Brussels.
@@matthewk3233 finally someone says it
Loved the shout out to the goat carlton kirby
Brilliant
Yea MVDP was my favorite too. Nice show
Greatvideo.
Wout Van Aert won that Mont Ventoux stage in the Tour, dropping everyone on the second ascent. Could have given him a mention? :)
MAL smashing it, my favorite climbing victory of the season!
Funny, I just rewatched Stage 6 of the Vuelta where Magnus Cordoba bested Roglic...also a great performance. Amazing crazy good Vuelta Cort did...
Wow no dislikes, biggest compliment to Laterne Rouge
Mvdp dropping the czar bomba on the final sienna climb in Strade was the biggest explosion this season
Qué bueno eres,!!!
I know it is a super short climb but 8.7 for 2min40s. That's like 540W from a real light guy for that long, sick.
Lord Padun got snubbed😂
Michal Schlegel, the new Caja Rural signing is going to put extreme numbers in next year´s Vuelta
Best stage of the year / most impressive is still the win from VDP un tirreno under the rain
Wow! Those aero seat posts are really making a difference in the modern peloton! Glad all the suspicions of the past are well behind us and we can all move forward!
So far for 2022, it's Jonas Vingegaard at the Col du Granon.
Nice! you should do a women's cycling video too
can you do the same video for classics, time trials etc. ?
Having admittedly not seen the data, Magnus Cort's win in stage 6 of the Vuelta against Roglic makes for a good honorable mention in my mind.
Grim conditions climbing awards for me go to Ben O'Connor at the tour and Geriant Thomas before he fell of before the finish line. Both good performances for the circumstances, Ben O'Connors being better imo. Really interested by Pog "only" doing just over 6 w/kg twice on that stage in the tour. The way he destroyed the competition it looked like it was way way more. It feels less outside the realms of believability now.
yeah his coach san milan wasn't lying when he said Pogacar did way better numbers on the road climbing stages in TDF 2020 where he wasnt as dominant. although stage 7 the day before this year was very very hard so his recovery is what makes the big difference
You need two list. This list with one exception were long alpine climbs, need a separate list for punchy thermonuclear attacks on short punchy climbs, like MVDP when he took yellow.
There I was, watching this video with my handy calculator to see the numbers for myself. Crazy! Wattage that nukes me in less than 2 minutes being held for more than a half hour!
How about MVDP in the Tour de France at that stage where he took the yellow jersey? talk about a strong climbing performance!!
Yah that was Ridiculous performance 2x up the climb. But guess he just wanted 1 short climb on the list.
@@matthewk3233 must be...ah well...still something I had rarely seen though!
@@pauljansen1137 was my favourite moment from a GT this year.
For a man weighing 100kg, to sustain 2 watts/kg for an hour is moderately timely already. To see people averaging like 4 watts or 6watts per kilo is insane. They really are something else.
Id lpve to see the statistics of tadej pogacar on the Last stage of the basque country Paicing alone chasing roglic Gaudu and a third rider for like 80 km but Kinda got the wout van aert Support of his Group mates
In 2022 It will be Buchmann and his attack on the last Giro climb where he dropes Carapaz
When I see the unreal perfomance of some nobody at the Tour of Portugal (7W/kg) and compare it to the best performances of the best riders of the world (6-6.4W/kg), I can clearly see the anti-doping stuff IS working to at least some extent in the bigger races.
THERMONUCLEAR!!
6:52 A cultured man to be sure...clearly a student of the classics. Cotton and Pepper. Two names synonymous with tier 1 sports commentating!
Best moment of the Tour was when Jonas Vingegaard dropped Pogacar
And the worst was Jonas getting caught on the decent. Those decent finishes eliminated both the motivation to attack and any excitement in the GC competition.
Appreciate the dodgeball reference
What about Ben O'connor vs Quintanan and Hiquita on Stage 9 of TdF
let me smash that like button more
Oakley: thermonuclear protection vintage 1991
Even in Portugal we dont have transmission of those competions, we only have Volta a Portugal and maybe Volta ao Algarve
How do Mathieu Van der Poel's watts/kilo and duration on his Strada Bianca win compare to Allaphilippe on the Mur de Huy?
What about WVA at the olympic road race?
Love the list LR.I want to see Primoz win the TDF next year and just shoot Pogy pogo out that back on Alpe duez
🥊🚵🏼 See you in the douches pogo..........🚴🏼♀️
As much as I’d like to see that for the spectacle - it ain’t gonna happen.
@@mmmbass6068 He's a Welp
@@mmmbass6068 We will see ... at this moment Roglic is the only rider who did beat Pogacar several times. The differences between those two Slovenians are so small that it is impossible to say who will win next years Tour. I do have high hopes for Roglic to be honest if I take next years TdF parcours in front of me.
You should do a Top 10 domestique performance of 2022
We did a similar video over at last week discussing the best domestiques in detail if you want to check it out kzhead.info/sun/Y697XaiHq555lnk/bejne.html&ab_channel=LanterneRougeCyclingPodcast
8:37 Idk if it's just me but that is some beautiful dancing
Raúl Alarcón has been replaced?!
Wout in mont ventoux climb?
How about Ivan Sosa at what race is that?
Nah. Pogi in the Alps at TdF was top this year, IMO.
agreed from lombardia, to all three GT's hes competed in, and won 3 stages in each . the way he goes away alone at distance is special... tirreno too. Since vuelta 2019, nobody else in GC contention top 3 has shown that kind of all in panache where hes going alone taking stages by over a minute in each grand tour. Just nobody else races like that. Bernal in Giro Giau stage was cool in pink but its a consistent theme from tadej to go solo and make it stick not react its a special quality imo. Puts people to the sword as saying goes
Padun the real number 1 ❤️
Bernal stage 9 in the Giro
you should trademark thermonuclear performance pat
ROGLA
