The battle for the polka dot jersey in the Tour de France grants the winner a step onto the stage podium at the end of each day and a special jersey for every day the rider is in the lead, providing incredible value to the team and its sponsors. Ide Schelling and Anthony Perez had one of the great first week polka dot battles this year

  • Personality is important too schelling was clearly loving it, the celebrations when he picked up points really animated the whole occasion. Even when he was solo through the intermediate sprint that he wasn’t going for he still put in a sprint, lunged at the line and celebrated some sprint point he didn’t care about. He was a proper entertainer that first week.

  • What a great video, took the time to go back to previous results so we can see how riders developed over the season. The offseason content is looking sick.

  • I think EF could send Neilson Powless jersey hunting in that first week, has yet to win a stage but has shown his capabilities in reduced bunch sprints in clasica san sebastian.

  • Wow, very entertaining, thanks for the heads-up. This is what we pay you the big bucks for.

  • This was a great vid LR. Couldn’t agree more with the entertainment value of the polka dot battle that first week of the Tour - Schelling was pure, unadulterated entertainment with his celebrations and crazy long sprints. The polka dot fight was great even in the following weeks with Poels and Woods duking it out, and WVA even trying to get in on it!

  • I LOVE the battles for the "lesser" jerseys. Watched the TDF since the 80s and I really hope the new kids keep up the new "style" of racing.

  • Like the Lantern said the goodwill and exposure created by the fight for the polka dot jersey is big. Love the Schelling shout out.

  • Love the expression of Shelling when he beat Peraze on 22 secs sprint!

  • Watching those two sprinting like maniacs for those early KOM points was one of my favourite tour moments for sure.

  • The prestige, drama, colour and guts on the mountains is why this jersey rather than the yellow drew me into cycling and grand tours as a kid, following the likes of Rominger and Chiapucci . With a whittled down group, seeing both the yellow and polka dot surviving on the climbs together is magical. Seeing it contested from day 1 this year was awesome.

  • Great shout in the Canadians on ISN. Very similar terrain to much of what we have in eastern Canada/Quebec, where Houle and Boivin are from.

  • Agree, super entertaining battle for the dots in the first week. By far the biggest and worst thing that totally ruined the dots jersey battle overall though was the double points on the two successive HC finish mtn stages right at the end of the tour. Pretty much guaranteed that the GC rider - in this case the Pog (who prob doesn't really care about the dots jersey anyway) was going to pick up 80 pts from 2 stages....coming from somewhere between 5-10th in the dots ladder to totally blowing the competition away due to 2 successive stage wins. HC is already 20 pts for 1st, which IMO is TOO much anyway - should be 15pts (given how hard it is to earn dots pts from cat 2, 3 and 4 hills) - absolutely no reason to make a HC finish 40pts (vs 10 pts for cat 1)...I really hope TDF don't fu k up the pts battle in 2022 with that sort of nonsense again.

  • I would have to say my favourite KOM battle had to be the Giro with the constant Bouchard, De Bondt battles almost every day in week 2 in the break picking up points over cat 2's and generally being fairly exciting

  • Great recap and analysis, thanks. It was the forgotten story of the first week due to Cav, MVP, Thomas/Roglic/Ewan crashes etc. but definitely made those stages a lot more exciting to watch.
