I could get three brush strokes before a bite and run for weeks. She gradually got so matted, I took her to a groomer (who used to be a vet tech, wonderful lady!) and she had to be shaved like this. Zelda still won’t groom herself, but she’ll let me brush her now. I’m glad you were so kind to the owners and the little astronaut ^_^

We brushed our cats daily but they still had mats here and there and needed very often appointments but vets give anasthesia during while doing shaving(we dont have groomers) and it was bad for them. We even lived in an area with no vet and it was nightmare. Our cat was having a diffucult time so my granny and dad decided to shave him but he hates being shaved so it was pretty bloody.

    • @@QUICKBOOKS1 My cat is long-haired, she used to get matted if you as much as wondered if she was. Super fine undercoat, with hair fibres that weave between each other. Shaving her at the vet once, they had to get too close to her skin & she got it split open. Had to be glued. This was a cat whose fur was un-groomable; you couldn't get deep enough down to keep it from matting. For this reason, a total body shave every January (indoors cat in winter) was necessary.

    • My dog had been traumatized at the groomers after having his toe cut off and hung on a pole. He was a gentle giant, but anytime someone tried to pick him up with clippers in his vicinity he was UNHAPPY. So much so, he bit a vet tech and needed to be put to sleep (sedated, not euthanized) for every subsequent clipping. That was, until we met an actual angel. Our dog let the guy touch every one of his paws (something he wouldn't even let ME do without flinching) and clip every nail without even getting huffy. People tend to underestimate a groomer. a good groomer is the best person on Earth for a scared or heavily matted animal.

My mum (vet surgeon) has to sedate her when she needs clipped and though she’s getting better at it, the first time we tried she looked like Dobby if he got ran over by a lawnmower. Unfortunately we don’t trust any local groomers due to friend’s dogs also having traumatic experiences so it is the Dobby haircut for our dog. She and any dogs going in for treatment don’t get any nicks now though which is a plus

  • I used to have a beautiful fluffy longhaired cat named Sophie. I brushed her several times a week and did not have to deal with many mats (or furballs). Then I got married and went on a honeymoon; the person who watched her while we were gone for 3 weeks was afraid to brush her and when we came back, she was so matted we had to have her shaved. The only groomers we could find insisted on putting her under for it, so it was an incredibly expensive haircut. It took forever to grow back in and look normal. So yeah, if you have a longhaired cat, staying on top of grooming, getting them used to the brush is essential to avoid sad cats and sad wallets. But sometimes things happen and our fluffballs get matted anyway, despite our best efforts!

He's got beautiful colors! 🧡 Man, I had a DSH cat who... didn't really know how to cat. That included grooming himself. Parts of his "lamb's wool" fur at the top of his butt/haunches always formed tiny mats every 4 to 6 months, so I took haircutting scissors and trimmed out what I couldn't brush out with a deshedding brush. I brushed him with that regularly, fortunately. It's been decades since we've owned medium or long-haired cats, and I'm glad I haven't had to maintain or detangle any cat coats that long. Nemo, the lamb's wool butt cat, just... really didn't groom himself, lol. He was more dog than cat. We called him a puppy cat! 😺 He crossed over the Rainbow Bridge in 2018, and we adopted another orange cat who's like the grandson of him (super sweet, very affectionate, and _needy_ for our love) and our late diva of a calico - partly her because he has white markings like she did, and... he does a VERY good job of grooming himself. His fur is always pristine. ✨ And our other cat basically has no undercoat, lol. 💀 He's more sensitive to temperature than we are, but he's slacked on grooming himself in recent years.

  • People don't understand how hard it is to keep a long-haired cat free of mats. My Siberian boy had huge mats on his rear-end region this past year; it was partially because of a health problem he had for a while, and partially because nothing I did seemed to make any difference as far as grooming was concerned. I had to remove the mats myself with a (non-electric) nose-hair scissor because local groomers wanted to sedate him before they would try to work on him, and I didn't want him sedated needlessly. I was lucky that he tolerated me working on him, but cat tolerance has limits and it did take about a month and a half to get rid of all of the mats that way. I'm brushing him daily as always, but I know we'll have the same problem again in the future. That's life with long-haired cats, particularly older ones.

  • Even though my gorgeous long-haired cat, The Muff, is brushed at least twice every day, he still can develop mats. Over the years I've learned that the minute I notice the tiniest little clump, out comes what I call The Grim Reaper, a de-matting comb. The Muff will run and hide if he sees this tool in my hand, so I must resort to a bit of subterfuge in order to approach him. Generally, it will take a tiny little clump and remove it. I'm extremely careful and tender using it, but it must be done, lest my gorgeous, glorious golden boy become as unhappy as poor Prince. Judging from Prince's naked self, a visit to a vet is in order. Hard work. Sorry, sweet Prince!

  • I've had Maine Coon Cats since I was 25. I'm 35 now. I use a daily glove brush on my 2 kitties for no more than 5 minutes - so 10 minutes total. I use a round brush and 2 combs on both kitties on Saturday or Sunday for 15 minutes - so 30 minutes total. It is a commitment, but they'll feel better, have less hairballs, less constipation, and look better with regular upkeep. Now, my kitties are not declawed and will scratch and bite when they've had enough, which is like 4 minutes in. But I took the time to learn and if I can't keep up with them (i.e., covid), they go to the groomer that month.

    • Yes, and some cats never learn to tolerate combing and brushing, no matter how early you begin. We adopted a 5 week old Himalayan kitten who was hell on wheels when we got her, and only got worse as she got older. We ended up having to do a shave-down just like with Prince, but she had to be put under gas anesthesia. Then from that point on, she had short hair 9 months out of the year, only developing a full coat for the winter. Come spring, it was back to the groomer for her warm weather lion cuts. She still never got tolerant at all and had to be anesthetized every time, but it was always JUST gas, she woke up as soon as the gas was stopped, and we could all tell how much happier she felt with her lion cuts. She would strut like a supermodel as soon as we were through. And I happen to be an experienced vet tech, so I know how to safely comb and brush a cat. Some cats are just not at all willing to allow it, even when their coats are in excellent condition. Of course you have to comb every day with these guys, but when the cat simply freaks out at the sight of the tools, you have to do something else. This cat was the only one of our many cats in our lives who would freak. I think it was a phobia, and she may have also had a sensory issue. All of our other Persians loved to be combed and brushed. Our current Domestic Longhair (Nebelung impostor, LOL!) climbs in my lap to be brushed and combed and even rolls over to let me comb and brush her WHOLE belly. She rolls her paws in the air like making invisible biscuits, and she purrs and ultimately falls asleep while I comb her out. So, it's not that we were neglectful. It was just something going on with that little Persian, and she simply couldn't handle a daily grooming. It happens!

    • I have persian cat over 15 years and even tho I didn't brushed her for two weeks she had like super small "matt" that I could easily brush off. Looking at the statement of his fur, skin and eyes, this is serious neglect. Propably he eat cheap bad unhealthy food too. If they can't afford to take proper care of an animal, please don't get one. Also brushing take like 5 minutes. It could be done even by elderly or sick people.

  • The state of cat is bad, but in treating owners with politeness, acknowledging they found the situation beyond them, the groomer has let them know they can ask for help more often, they won't end up being verbally bollocked and feel they cannot ask for help. They will probably feel they can keep the cat in a better state, now that there are no knots and felting to upset the cat. They now know they can get help, any time. Sometimes, to lecture and berate actually does MORE harm. When the problem returns, they are more reluctant to ask for help. Not every pet owner is competent, or confident or experienced, or aware of so many inventions to prevent bites or slashes
