I've only had to bathe 1 cat in my life but unfortunately the same cat that fought off multiple generations of racoons and survived living her whole life surrounded by coyotes wasnt a push over. • A few years ago my collie picked up fleas and it wasn't until the other dog and both cats were infected that it was discovered. Most of the animals were pretty easy to treat but my poor long-haired senior cat had the worst time of it. She was 15 at the time and I eventually had to shave her down because of how they gathered near her stomach. It didn't matter how many baths I gave her, collars, drops, they were absolutely constant. Thankfully after the shaving they had no place to hide and she was finally allowed some peace.

    • Try using Dawn dish liquid, gobs and gobs of it. Slather it right on there as thick as you can get it, right down to their skin. It's one of the first things I always do when I take in rescue kittens because they are usually still too small for any of the topical flea treatments. The cats hate it but the dying fleas hate it more. It suffocates them right out of existence.

  • I had a long hair cat that would get matted really bad on his belly every summer. He was an indoor/outdoor cat. My father would brush him out every night, but the belly hair would mat up so bad that we just couldn't get through it. So we shaved his belly. It was super cute cause the cat would lay on his back on my father's legs, and we would shave his belly very carefully with a mustache trimmer. He would just let us do it. And you never knew he was shaved unless he laid on his back to show you.

    • @@rebeccasilver2181 It worked rather well. It was a Whal mustache trimmer. Just took our time, and went in little sections. Made sure to clean out any large clumps. If you find yourself with a rather large mat that you need to remove. Just slowly shave at it, and try to pull gently at the hair so it doesn't wad up on the clipper.

    • Long ago I had a beloved kitty whose fur was so long around his bottom that he couldn't keep himself groomed and poo would actually get stuck in it. (Blech.) We got his bottom shaved at the vet's a couple of times, but that got expensive! Also repeated trauma for poor kitty, so we bought our own shaver. We would take him down and set him on top of the drier. BF (later hubby) would hold him and I would shave his whole bottom area. I swear my kitty, Lars, could read my mind, though! I would just have the thought, "Hmm, it's about time to shave Lars's bottom again," and he would look up very startled and run and hide under the bed!! 😂 Lars, 1978-1991. • Thank you for explaining why allowing any animal to get matted is not only unsightly, but actually painful for the animal. As a former Persian cat owner, I am way too familiar with front chest and butt areas being prone to mats. Those being the two areas where Onyx hated to be brushed. My only solution was to snip into the core of the mat with a cuticle snip and then use a slicker brush to finish.

    • I am old 72, & not as fast as I use to be. When that kitty meowed my 3 month old came running to make sure she is still an only fur-baby since my 11 year old passed away 😭 almost 2 months ago. Once she was reassured😻, she laid down on the kitchen floor & stretched like crazy.

  • My mom had a calico with long, very fine hair that would always mat. She really liked getting her annual lion cut for the summer, and especially loved the blow dry. After the cut she was always more affectionate and outgoing - it must have felt so good!

  • I had a cat who looked just like him for 18 years. His last six months was pretty bad because the vet shaved off his fur mats in an unpleasant way. His name was Sid. I still miss him. I hope this poor guy does better.

    @saralynfosnight5139@saralynfosnight5139 Жыл бұрын
    • Oh, poor Sid 💔 i don't trust vets with grooming my cat either, for this exact reason. Most of them don't care for the animal's comfort. Much rather just do it myself, however difficult it may be.

  • What a sweet Boi. He was pretty well behaved considering how much was involved in grooming him. He must feel so much better. I’m sure his Hoomans have an attractive sweater he can wear, while his fur grows back in. He’s a beauty. His little sideways glance at 10:31, as if to say “oh the indignity of it all”, was pathetically funny. It’s AMAZING what a difference the Happy Hood makes. Great Job.

  • One of our cats goes for an occasional groom because she's got mostly long hair (hard to describe lol she was the only one of her litter with long hair) and absolutely hates to be brushed. Her belly and backside are super thick and fluffy so they tend to get pretty dirty. We tried bathing her once before we knew the scruff hold trick and got murdered 😂. But she'll also try and kill you if you pick her up. Our other cat, a very short hair, needed a bath once after a bout of diarrhea. My daughter and I suited up in long sleeve shirts and heavy sweatshirts with long Playtex gloves and held her by the scruff while we bathed her. Worked great and the few times she squirmed away, the long lined gloves and sweatshirt kept us from getting any scratches. The other one is too vicious -even with the scruff trick, I'm leaving her to the pros!

  • Honestly, kudos to you. I shave cats at our vet practice when they're sedated, and its stressful. They are so easy to nick... Doing that while they're awake, can move at any second and might reach the end of their tether just the moment your hand is near their face?? Hats off to you. I wouldn't wanna do that
