    • A somewhat old fashioned and convoluted (but perfectly legitimate) sentence to be used when a student steps out of line would be: "Nu är det kokta fläsket stekt! Du har satt din sista potatis och kommer få dina fiskar varma!" Directly translates to "The boiled pork is now fried! You have planted your last potato and will have your fish warm!" In essence, and in that situation, this would mean: "I have reached my limit! You are way over the line and you're due for punishment!" NOTEWORTHY: These are old proverbs, and I cannot imagine this sentence being said in a classroom today, but back it up about 40 or 50 years, and it might have happened! :)

  • For any tourists, Swedish or otherwise who come to Sydney, Australia, there's a cafe in Manly called Fika, and is designed exactly around what its original meaning is. Truly the best coffee I've had in Sydney, lovely staff, absolutely divine food and pastry. Just a little small, so it's tough to reliably get a seat without waiting.

  • This is more sayings or expressions than slang, but nonetheless a great lesson in Swedish. Lagom and Fika are really everyday words that are more or less unique for Swedish. Most Swedes speak English well and we often do these literal translations of Swedish expressions amongst ourselves.

  • Thanks to this video I found out that I love Swedish slang, lol! Really enjoyed this glimpse into Swedish society. The armchair anthropologist in me finds it interesting how English speakers' "not for all the money in the world" is the equivalent of the Swedish "not for all the butter in Smaland" - perhaps it's a reflection of what is important to a society (money vs. butter).
