Sharapova and Li even lost to a 39-year-old Kimiko Date. Both surely are not "great players".

This was the first tournament she played after winning the us open, and despite being quite rusty she didn't lose a set. Her level was very high especially in the latter stages. She was fit and was moving almost as well as she did before the knee surgery. Its a pity she refused to play this tournament after 2014. She could have easily added to her tally of 5. Injuries also made her withdraw from 2007 and 2008 editions. She missed other years entirely because of severe injuries (2003 and 2010). Injuries didn't help at all. I miss her a lot. Fortunately I enjoy watching some of the new players, therefore my interest in tennis hasn't diminished.
Gotta marvel at the greatness. The Queen beat at least 4 future hall of famers and multiple time grand slam champions (the exception being Radwanska) in succession, in straight sets. Dominance, greatness, the GOAT 👌🏾🙌🏾

So insane that she entered here as the "3 seed" with 2 Slams PLUS titles in Charleston, Madrid, Olympics and Stanford. The WTA system is a JOKE.

@@stephaniefagan1736 I get that Azarenka and Maria had excellent years but they had fewer slams, no YEC title, no Olympic medal, and just went a little further at AO and FO than Rena that year. Still makes the system look clownish
