  • One word when Serena plays like this. SCARY!! If you don't understand how great she is as a tennis player, you are not a tennis fan. Love her or hate her, we know she is simply the best of her generation if not the best of all time

I love seeing Serena win her 2nd French major. That match & her quarterfinal win over Kuznetsova at the French is also entertaining. Serena has SO many fun, entertaining matches to watch when you want a pick me up. : )

    • @@kparkermillennium Oh dear... You might want to read about Serena Williams' therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs) before making such bold statements (There is an Tennis,com article about it from July 2018). Also Meldonium was legal for the most time. It became illegal for not even two month when Maria got tested. She took full responsibility and suspended her tennis career for the required 15 month. It was even reduced by the CAS because it was "without significant fault" and Maria was no "intentional doper". Not to mention that until now it has not been proven by anyone, that Meldonium is indeed an performance-enhancing drug. So overall I'd say you should let that claim slide. Both are incredible athletes. That's it.

  • Each side of this tennis court represented something very different. On Serena's side; how to win an Olympic final and on Maria's side; how to embarrass yourself at an Olympic final. This was also a metaphorical experience as well as Maria became everything negative and all the undignified perceptions people have about Serena. Serena used her racquet as her only defense and put all her opposition hastily to rest.

She was determined to have that gold medal and nothing was going to stop her. And the conditions in that final were not easy to deal with considering all the wind and it still didn't matter as Serena was in complete control. And finally the best part is it happened at the Olympic games in front of the entire world watching. Priceless!!

  • This post is for those who have not a clue about tennis history and for the haters that like to question Serena's dominance. Evert and Nav turned pro in '72 and '75 respectively. Evert and Martina were the two best players during their era and therefore was able to meet each other 80 times with 61 of the those meetings being in tournament finals. There was essentially no depth in the field during the reigns of Evert and Nav since most of the players were a bunch of leftover players from the pre open era. FYI the Evert-Martina rivalry has eras in itself which are lopsided. The the first 20 matches it's Evert 16-4, the next 20 it's again Evert 11-9 (they are pretty much even at this point but overall its Evert 27-13)..then the next 40 matches it's Martina 30-10 which included a 13-match winning streak. Serena and Maria's "rivalry" is now at 18-2 Serena. One could argue that if Serena and Maria were able to play each other as much as they did we may see similar results - but it's doubtful because Serena is head and shoulders above her and the rest of the field. Graf came into GS championship form in '87 (and just in time for her golden slam in '88) more than 10 years past the Evert/Martina era of dominance. From 1987-1990 Graf won 9 slams. 4 of those 9 slams were at the expense of Nav and the other 5 were at the expense of Evert, Mary Joe, Sabatini, Sukova, and Zvereva. When she reigned she was facing Nav (last GS singles title Wimby 90) and Evert (last GS singles title FO 86) in the twilight of their careers granted Nav put up more of a fight than Evert but it was evident that 1987-1990 Nav was not as formidable as 1982-1984 Nav. Sabatini was a one slam wonder that never lived up to her hype. Mary Joe, Sukova, and Zvereva never held a GS singles trophy or was ranked No.1. Graf's only comp (90- early 93) came in form of a teenage Monica Seles who won 8 slams before her 20th birthday and was the undisputed No.1 player in the world to then be attacked in 93 by a crazed Graf fan - essentially ending her career. After losing the 93 AO final to Seles (by then Seles had a 3-1 edge against Graf in GS finals), Graf went on to win the rest of the slams that year unchallenged. Monica returned to the game damn near two years later as a shell of her former self. Even though she was able to win the 96 AO and made it to a couple of USO finals (95 and 96 - losing both to Graf) she was never really a threat to Graf as she once was. From 93-96 when steffi won 10 of 15 slams (damn near half of her overall total), she received little resistance...these are the players she faced during the period and the slams they won a post stabbed Seles (1 slam), Sanchez-Vicario (2 slams), Mary Joe (0 slams), Sabatini (0 slam), Novatna (0 slams), Zvereva (0 slams), Sukova (0 slams), Martinez (1 slam), Pierce (1 slam), Coetzer (0 slams)..it wasn't until when Hingis came along in stopped her reign..she was able to get the best of Hingis at the 99 FO for her last GS title. Serena of the other hand throughout her ENTIRE GS CAREER from 1999-2015 serena has had stiff competion from Graf (1 slams), seles (0 slams), venus (7 slams), henin (7 slams), maria (5 slams), hingis (5 slams), clijsters (4 slams), Capriati (3 slams), Li Na (2 slams),kvitova (2 slams), vika (2 slams), kuznetsova (2 slams), Mauresmo (2 slams), Davenport (2 slams), then you have stosur, ivanovic, myskina, schiavone, bartoli each with 1 slam..let's not forget that 12 of those women mentioned had been ranked No.1 in the world with 10 of those 12 acheiving the No.1 ranking duirng her GS career...basically serena was able to win 21 GS titles while competing with talent that far exceeds anything Graf, Evert, or Nav, had to deal with...Serena is GOAT and they agree too So to recap Serena has won 21 slams and 4 GOLD Medals in 3 Olympics spanning the 90s, 00s, and 10s. Graf's GS final record is 22-9 v. 21-4 for serena which is the best winning percentage male or female. Venus and Serena have a DOUBLE CAREER GOLDEN SLAM in doubles - Martina doesn't have an olympic gold medal. Nav was an active player in 1988 and had her chance to go for gold but she opted not to play in singles or doubles at those games so that's her loss. Serena and Venus are also 13-0 in their first 13 GS doubles finals while Martina is 10-3. Graf does not have a doubles career worth mentioning. Serena continues to win slams in the power tennis era where anyone in the top 20 can be a multiple GS champion in the 70's, 80's, 90's. She has been able to keep up with and dominate the younger more powerful generation this late in her game despite her MULTIPLE injuries one of which was life threatening. She still has a lot of tennis left if her and to me and most she is already GOAT but if she needs three more slams to put a stamp on it despite what she has proven already my guess is she won't keep us waiting for long. One more thing: Serena is 1-0 against Graf in WTA tournament finals.

    • +Raul Jackson You did a really wonderful job of putting things into perspective here man. I always felt the Evert-Nav and Graf era lacked "depth" as you say, and after seeing the cold facts you posted here, there is certainly no doubt about it now. I don't take anything away from Evert, Nav, and Graf. They still had to win those matches. It is what it is, that's all.

    • adam2eve Thanks man. I just got so frustrated with the comments about serena as a person and her legacy so i just started typing. I've been watching tennis for years and seen the greats come and go and serena to me (and most) is the cream of the crop..

    • +Raul Jackson Wow, this is a very comprehensive post, most insightful. Plaudits to you.

      @D.Antony@D.Antony8 жыл бұрын
    • It's not comprehensive at all. It's completely untrue and full of inaccuracies when dealing with Graf, and completely dismissive of the Evert era. Sorry - as far as the summation of Serena - just look at her last 12 Grand Slams victories - Who are the greats of the game she has face - Sharapova and Azarenka, (one of who's number Serena has completely got- happens in tennis though), two of the most one dimensional players the game has every seen - their grunting is more potent that their games most times. She has faced them twice each - which leaves 8 slams - with names such as Jankovic, Safina, Zvonareva, Radwanska (who had a respiratory infection), Safarova, Muguruza, Wozinaciki and at the 2010 Australian Open Henin in her first tournament back from retirement. Her comeback didn't last long. I believe I see 6 or 7 first time slam finalist in this list. Evert had to deal with 3 of 4 slams played on fast grass courts - wood rackets and a host of attacking players - because of the grass courts. Not the best surface for the women who fashioned the modern baseline game of tennis. Here are some of her opponents and their H2H with Chris, and slams won during the era; Court (8), 9-4; King (7), 19-7; Wade (2), 40-6; Goolagong (7), 26-13 ; Austin (2), 8-9; Mandlikova (4), 19-7 ; Navratilova (17), 37-43. Because of team tennis Chris skipped 3 French Opens (76, 77, 78) during her 125 match win steak on clay which ran from the end of 1973 to the spring of 1979. Played only 6 Australian Opens because of the scheduling - and the fact that there was no off-season (the majority of players didn't play) It didn't have a full 7 round 128-draw until 1984. Chris and Martina along with other players - had to make the switch from wood to graphite. The US Open changed from grass in 1976, the Australian in 1988. Today's players are completely pampered - in comparison to the Evert era - even the Graf era. All the on court - injury time outs, medical assessments, bathroom breaks, shirt changes, heat rules, even the towelling off between points - and the ball boy service - didn't happen. The challenge system and on court coaching, advances in training and diet; then there is the racket technology. I highly doubt many of today's player could hit the ball with wood - the small racket head (like a squash racket) the wood with no power but good accuracy. Todays rackets are crazy insane. I know because I play - and yes I played with wood..right up until 1989. I have quickly went over the Evert era - I could list the 5 one slam winners - and the other great players from that era that did win a slam. But if you don't know them it wouldn't mean much. As far as the Olympics is concerned - they were re-introduced in 1988 - and points were not awarded until 2004. To say Martina Navratilova doesn't have a Gold Medal or she had her chance is ridiculous. Gold Medals meant nothing to players of that era. The Golden Slam wasn't even a term when Graf won it in 1988. Serena has played on tour longer than both Evert and Graf - here is their win/loss records. Evert- 1309-145/ 90%, Graf - 902-115 / 88.7 %; Williams - 737-123/ 85.7 %. Serena has got a record in slam finals that any player would love to have 21-4. But she lacks the consistency of the other greats. Evert 52 semi-finals of 56 played, Navratilova 44 of 66, Graf 37 of 54, Serena 29 of 61. I am not into knocking players, and comparing era is completely senseless. But it would seem that people continue to do so - in an effort to prop up their favourite players. Each player can stand alone on their own accomplishments.

      @zedlacredit@zedlacredit8 жыл бұрын
    • +zedlacredit I agree with not comparing players from different eras, however the era of the last 20 years has waayyy better depth than the late 70's to late 80's era. Maybe not the top 4 but from 5-20 the last 18 years is much deeper. This explains why players today don't make the semis as often as they did many years ago.
