Full highlights of the women's tennis doubles gold medal match between the USA's Venus and Serena Williams and the Czech Republic's Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka from Centre Court at Wimbledon as part of the London 2012 Olympic Games (5 August).
Tennis has a long Olympic history but withdrew from the programme after 1924. It did not return as a medal sport until 1988. Professionals are now welcome to compete, and the Olympic competition includes men's and women's singles and men's and women's doubles.

Such a beautiful thing to see two beautiful black sisters win together! Through the highs and lows they kept the drive and determination and encouraged one another with gold medals on the line. I am so proud! And mama so used to seeing them win that she's just like "child, y'all have fun! mama's watching" she knows she raised two amazing players and competitors. I learned late in life how to play tennis and at that time(thirty-six years ago) right away I knew that if I had learned tennis thirty years before then, I would have made tennis my career. Although now I am recuperating from a massive stroke, that caused my blood pressure to fall dangerously low, I am still plotting my return to the tennis court. AbduJah, Serena's and Venus's mother coached them when they were mere children, too. Their father is amazing and is the main reason the sisters are such wonderful tennis players because he first had the vision, learned tennis on his own, and served as a marvelously positive teacher for them. But their mother taught them tennis as well. She was a part of their rise from the very beginning. Since their father, Richard Williams, has remarried and now has a baby son, he and his wife sit in a different box in the stands than the Williams sisters' Mother. Obviously it might seem kind of awkward if he and his new wife were in the same box as Venus's and Serena's mother! Serena says that her father is still her coach - along with her mother and Mouratoglou. Serena also begged her father to come to some of her events when he was feeling his age a bit and didn't feel like flying so far from home. He's over 70 years old now. Venus has said that she would Never say anything bad about her dad. The Williams sisters love their dad and always will. One of the Williams sisters' other early coaches wrote a book some years ago in which he stated the Williams Sisters were the Most POLITE children he'd ever coached. He largely credited their father, Richard Williams for that. That coach wrote that Richard Williams was a good father who would stop Venus and Serena from practicing for weeks at a time to take the family on vacation to DisneyWorld and the like. Their father (and mother) wanted them to have good childhoods. And they did.

Venus' doubles play will keep her career going long after she decides to give up singles. In fact, I prefer watching her doubles play more than singles. For example, her coverage at net is superb, something she doesn't give her public too much of in singles play.
