Team GB's Andy Murray defeats Switzerland's Roger Federer in straight sets to win the gold medal in the London 2012 Olympic Games tennis event (5 August).
Argentina's Juan Martin Del Potro won the bronze medal match in the event to complete the medal winners.
Tennis has a long Olympic history but withdrew from the programme after 1924. It did not return as a medal sport until 1988. Professionals are now welcome to compete, and the Olympic competition includes men's and women's singles and men's and women's doubles.

  • When you think Murray had lost to Federer in the Wimbledon final just 28 days earlier, this was all the more brilliant. In those 8 days of tennis at the London Olympics Andy was determined to do his bit and win a medal for the team and he really did. He was incredible for the whole tournament. Some will say it was the best he’s ever played, but while he was brilliant and he did play his heart out, I think he was even better during his run to number one in the world in 2016. However, back to this, it was the precursor to the US Open in the August and September of 2012, when Murray beat Djokovic to win his first major and then won his first Wimbledon title against Djokovic in straight sets the following year. Things have been more difficult for Murray in the last few years because of his hip resurface, but videos like this demonstrate that for several years it was not a ‘big three’ it was very much a ‘big four’.

    • Fed was lucky in the semi's anyway. Andy overplayed him!!! And he will do it twice,at least! And he menage to catch his dream come true,to become number 1,the shortest number 1 ever, but at least he did it,with few points different from Novak! He get out of biggest pressure from his shoulders, which British put on him.. Unfortunately, that run to catch Novak, playing tournament after tournament in the year when Novak made the biggest difference between second and third player, having more then both of them together, with breaking point record cost Murray the highest price!!! He's career,he's health!!! That run ruined him! He will never be able to play tennis like he use to... Sad! He was good competitor! Still trying,but...
