    • no. but she's one of the best of all time for sure. Graf 88' will likely never be duplicated again. She virtually had a perfect season. All four grand slams, The gold medal at the olympics. during a much shorter career then Serena, Graf spent almost her entire career ranked #1. With 10 extra yearsm serena only won one more grand slam then Graf did. As far as sheer dominance during the peak of her career, nobody has nor ever will rival what Graf did. Certainly not to take away from Serena being dominant for over 20 years, which is also an amazing feat... But, to call one or the other the GOAT is kind of like comparing the top men... You can make an argument for Rafa, Novak, or Roger all for different reasons. Same applies to the women. Martina Navritilova is also Truly amazing, and one could argue she is the GOAT as well, just look at her career, She dominated in singles and DOUBLES!

      @strawpaladin213@strawpaladin21310 ай бұрын
    • The criteria for GOAT measurement is dominance, longevity with consistency, versatility & Elo rating (very important metric in today's era). By using that metric Graf is clearly the GOAT then it's Martina then there is a big gap then Serena.

Capriati retired in 2004 when Serena had won only 6 slams. Henin retired in 2008 when Serena had won only 8 slams, returned in 2010 but never made even the top 10 again. Venus Williams won her last non-Wimbledon slam in 2001, her last Wimbledon title in 2008 when Serena had won only 8 slams. Davenport won her last slam in January 2000 and retired in 2008 when Serena had won only 9 slams. Dementieva never won a slam, retired in 2010 when Serena had won only 10 slams. Jankovic never won a slam, reached slam quarters or better only 8 times, has a low career winning percentage of only 63.5. Petrova made slams semis or better only twice, has a low career winning percentage of only 63.8. All that explains why Serena was able to win 13 slams in the 2010s.

  • 19-year old Serena was booed by almost an entire stadium at indian wells, but managed to beat a quality opponent in the shape of Kim Clijsters to win the title. She's the only woman to save match points at 3 different slams and go on to win ( Australia open 2003, 2005 and Wimbledon 2009). She underwent knee surgery at just 21 years old in 2003, which paved the way for Justine Henin to win back to back grand slams for the only time in her career as well as 2 of her 3 non clay slams. She suffered a pulmonary embolism and so many health issues. She was scrutinised a lot and faced some unfair treatment especially in the 2004 us open. People wrote her off so many times yet she persevered and won 23 slams. Yet people still doubt her mental strength. You might not like her or she might not be your favourite player, but let no one deny her mental strength. She lost some of it after 2015, but most of her career she was on the level of Novak Djokovic in terms of mental strength.

    • Serena is mentally strong, but she is not the mentally strongest player ever, unlike Djokovic. She cracked too many times under pressure. She also had the added benefit of being able to rely on her serve in pressure moments, something players like Nadal and Djokovic did not. She’s definitely up there but she isn’t as mentally strong as Graf, Evert or Seles.

      @akizaizinskii@akizaizinskii9 ай бұрын
    • Being able to rely on your serve in pressure moments is mental strength in itself. If it were easy everyone would be doing that in pressure moments. Serena never lost a grand slam finals after winning the first. I genuinely want to know what makes Monica Seles mentally tougher than Serena. I feel she chocked a lot of times after she came back from the stabbing incident especially in the 1998 French open. If Evert was that tough, how come she lost so many grand slam finals

    • @@Official.tadiwa the list of players that made Serena look terrible is fairly extensive at the end of her career. Kerber, mugurutha, andreescu(two times), yes Halep, Osaka. I kind of feel the Andreescu match really drove the nail in the coffin of her career though. She already withdrew from a final vs Andreescu before that us open, yet seemed perfectly healthy during her run to the final at the us open a week later… when she met Andreescu in the final, bianca completely outplayed her in almost every conceivable facet of the game and only the crowd kept her hanging on for a moment during a comeback in the second set. The net, umpire, ball kids, line callers didn’t give her anything complaining to work with, so she couldn’t explode like the year before with Osaka. She truly got thoroughly and soundly beaten and I think at that point she knew she would never win another grand slam. Too many young fresh talented players with serves and power and finesse and a more well rounded game then she could now deal with. Honestly I feel her best shot was the match against Halep she lost… Watching kerber dismantle Serena with accuracy, foot speed, and error free tennis was something to behold. Mugurutha overpowered her in that final badly. I had never seen anybody do that to Serena up until that match, but Serena was simply overpowered and looked lost on the court that day.I watched them all. Just as I’ve watched so many times when Serena won as well. I truly think Serena was one of the greatest players of all time, but I don’t feel like her accomplishments where better then when I watched Graf play. You can say it was many different things that brought down her mental strength… having a baby changes the body yes. There have been other players that have had babies and returned to the sport successfully however. Clijsters likely is the most impressive. As for Henin… at grand slams, Henin was 4 win 2 losses against Serena. I’m pretty sure that means Serena couldn’t deal with her. Serena lost three matches at grand slams in a row against Henin.

  • Had Serena been a really mentally strong player she would have won the Grand Slam in 2015. And she would not so often have lost slam finals very meekly: 26 46 to Venus (USO 01) 16 46 to Sharapova (Wim 04) 26 36 to Stosur (USO 11) 36 36 to Kerber (Wim 18) 26 46 to Osaka (USO 18) 26 26 to Halep (Wim 19). Actually none of the greats of the game (Serena is one of course!) was so often destroyed in slam finals as Serena. Not because her opponent was the better player but because Serena imploded.

She Didnt have terrible mental strength either, but there are scores of times when she went out early in a major, as well as choking at the end as well, espescially late in her career. Fortuneately, with the level of talen she has, she was able often to overcome any sort of mental deficit she had on a given day to win. I can name probably 20 matches that she truly did not exhibit mental strength at all though. Usually, she vastly outclassed her opponents with her skill, when she ws truly challenged, she often folded, and folded badly.
