  • I'm a panel beater with over 20 years in the trade. Nothing wrong with your method of repair great job. But using that air chisel without ear muffs and using a mig welder without a full welding helmet is crazy. I'm 62 years old now with hearing aids from industrial deafness. Wish someone gave me a hard time about not wearing ear muffs.

    • Thank you, Michael, for your feedback and sharing your experience. You bring up an important point about safety in the workshop. It's crucial to prioritize personal protective equipment such as ear muffs and welding helmets to prevent potential hearing damage or eye injuries. Safety should always be a top priority in any repair work. I appreciate your perspective and reminder to prioritize safety in all aspects of the job.

    • A perfect response but will you follow your own advice and wear the correct equipment? The skills evident in this video are not done proper justice by the irresponsible disregard for personal safety. Hearing deficiency is bad enough but you only get the one pair of eyes and using any welding device without a proper a head shield is lunacy. Other than these obvious draw backs I really enjoyed watching a skilled pair of hands at work. I’m interested to know if the amount of man hours and parts involved in the extensive repair of this vehicle was financially viable?

    • Well john. Never happen in Australia is debatable. I have done a few of these over the years, comes down to what brand of car and what it is insured for. But having said that. The insurance companies are getting stricter by the year. I can`t upload my pic`s of the last one like this I done around 2 years ago, just as bad. You can buy the whole side one peace which starts from the front pillar all the way back to the Quarter panel, some makes even come with the tail lamp panel as well. But of cause you need to be a top quality panel shop with a proven track record and all the latest inverter spot welders and mig welders. No heating with an oxy blow tourch allowed for many years now.

    @bulufish8208@bulufish82089 ай бұрын
    • You're absolutely right! The repairs shown in the video were likely covered by the insurance company as part of the claim settlement process. Regarding the welding without eye protection, it's essential to emphasize the importance of safety when performing any welding tasks. Welding produces intense light and harmful UV radiation, which can cause severe eye damage if not properly protected. It's crucial for welders to wear appropriate eye protection, such as welding helmets with UV filters, to safeguard their eyes during welding operations. Safety should always be a priority in any professional setting to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of the workers.

    @dianeruiz0721@dianeruiz072110 ай бұрын
    • Thank you for your comment, Diane Ruiz. Repair standards and regulations can vary between countries and regions. In the US, insurance companies may determine a vehicle to be a total loss based on various factors such as the extent of damage, repair costs, and the vehicle's value. It's important to consider local laws and regulations when assessing repairs and insurance coverage.

      @xinxianshi@xinxianshi11 ай бұрын
  • I have to point out that this style of repair is illegal in Australia. You can not do a sectional repair on the inner high tensile panels and then butt weld them as you can on the outer much thinner sill panel and outer pillar. Those welds will split apart if the car is hit again safety reasons. Those inner panels must be welded in as complete panel. Meaning that you must cut at least 50 mm to 100 mm past the size of the inner structural high tensile steel sections so you can access and remove it and replace the whole panel as it comes from the manufacture. Means a little more work. The heat generated from the butt weld will weaken it dramatically and will split right along that weld you made in the next accident, or even cause hair line fractures over time. I`ll bet money on that you had trouble getting door gaps when trial fitting everything by the way you went about pulling the damage out. Like a peace of string laid out straight, the distance of both ends will shorten when you use your finger and slide the middle of it one way and then slide it back to where it was. both ends of the string will still be shortened. Chief Eze Liners have at least 3 pull posts some have 5 pulling posts. But next time you have a similar hit ,try releasing the anchoring clamps just a little on the bed itself but as tight as you can make them on the pinch weld so they will move little under pressure on the bed. Then put a pull on both of these anchoring clamps just a little away from each other and leave that pressure on them. Now you can go about pulling the damage out. You will see how much easier the damage will come out and have a easier time getting door gaps again. Just like that piece of string if you pull on each end the string will straighten up by itself, lol . Wish it would be that easy on the car. Or you could put a Porto power in between those anchoring clamps and put pressure on them while you pull the damage out. helps the damage come out more easily and return the correct length of that sill panel and maybe even the wheel base length if it was a harder hit to shorten the wheel base on that side. Don`t forget to check the indirect damage on the other side, eg. door gaps will open up from the hit. But will normally close back up to factory size if the damage is pulled out correctly. I did enjoy watching you repair this car, you do have great skills and there is always new things to learn in the auto industry, I started my trade in 1984. Boy have I seen a lot of change over the years. Not just the cars themselves, but all the equipment used in a panel shop or some call them body shops ,lol Enjoy your work. You get a good feeling when the customer comes and sees their car all nice and new.

    • With my tiny amount of knowledge on this subject I thought the hammering would work-harden the steel and then the welding would make it brittle and crystalline. I understand modern cars are made of high-carbon steel and this isn't patched as easily as older mild steel. Agreed that this repairer has skills, but repairing the inner panels that way doesn't seem like it would restore the original strength of the chassis. I see the repairer has replied positively. KZhead is great for sharing knowledge, but it's important that people with your level of experience comment when safety may be compromised. Thanks!

    @waratah5422@waratah542210 ай бұрын
    • Thank you for your feedback. Ensuring proper safety measures during automotive repairs, including interior protection during angle grinding and MIG welding, is indeed crucial. These safety measures help prevent damage to the interior components of the vehicle and protect against potential hazards such as sparks, fumes, or debris. Professional repair shops typically have established safety protocols that include appropriate shielding and covering of interior areas to minimize the risk of damage or contamination. This may involve the use of fire-resistant blankets, plastic sheeting, or specialized covers specifically designed for protecting sensitive interior components. It's important for technicians to prioritize safety and take necessary precautions to protect both themselves and the vehicle during the repair process. If you have any concerns about the safety practices observed in a particular video or repair, it's always a good idea to raise those concerns with the repair professional or shop involved.

  • Nice to see the type of skills we used to employ in the U.S., before the government and lawyers mandated methods which are much more expensive, and this job would never happen here, as the car would be totaled and in a scrapyard. Think of all the resources it takes to make a car, and the minimal time/labor this man used to bring it back to use again.

    • You bring up an interesting point about the differences in repair approaches and regulations in various countries. Indeed, the standards and regulations for auto repair can vary significantly between regions, often influenced by factors like safety, liability, and environmental concerns. In some places, like the United States, the focus on safety and legal liability has led to more stringent repair and replacement guidelines. On the other hand, in some other countries, as demonstrated in this video, skilled technicians can perform extensive repairs to salvage vehicles that might be considered totaled elsewhere. It's a testament to their craftsmanship and resourcefulness. It's a complex issue with pros and cons on both sides. While more rigorous standards can enhance safety and consumer protection, they can also lead to higher repair costs and more waste in some cases. It's important for consumers to be aware of these differences and make informed decisions based on their individual circumstances and priorities.

    @iandibley8032@iandibley803210 ай бұрын
    • Thank you for your comment. Indeed, this repair demonstrates the skill and talent of the panel beater involved. The cost of labor can vary across different countries, and it's true that higher labor costs in some regions may make extensive repairs less common. Additionally, as the industry evolves, there may be a shift in the skills and expertise of younger panel beaters, which could impact the availability of such repairs. However, it's important to note that there are still skilled professionals in various countries who can successfully undertake complex repairs like this. The availability and feasibility of repairs can vary based on factors such as market demand, regulations, and individual preferences.

  • I was the manager of two Mercedes-Benz stores and we had a client trade in his Turbo Porsche that had $47,000 insurance repair claim. It took our bodyshop 1 years of complaining to fix it and the total bill went to $58,000 by the time it was finished (I'm sure the insurance company would rather had written it off to scrap but, it had only 1,200km on the clock). Once it was done we had a Porsche Dealership inspect the car as required for the rust warranty and they were not able to determine where the car had been hit (complete driver's side replacement!). Sold the car with complete transparency including rebuild pictures for $75,000 and never heard a "peep" from the buyer. It is amazing what can be done. We rebuild a 500 SEC that was dropped while being unloaded from a ship and the job was done so well it was completely indistinguishable from NEW! So, just because you buy a new car doesn't mean it had never been damaged or wrecked!

    • Thank you for sharing your experience. Indeed, skilled technicians and body shops can perform impressive repairs on vehicles, restoring them to a condition that is often difficult to distinguish from new. Transparency in providing information about past repairs, as you mentioned, is crucial for maintaining trust between sellers and buyers. It's a reminder that a vehicle's history and condition can vary widely, even if it has been involved in an accident or undergone extensive repairs.

Originally, the "declaration" included "Damage ofer $2,000" and had no requirement beyond that simple disclosure. The government insurance provider in our jurisdiction was sued and was called as an expert witness. The fundamental issue was the depreciation the declaration imposed on a vehicle with more than $2000 damage. The insurance corp was insistent that a car damaged that required the entire car from the firewall forward was replaced - almost 50% of the original valuse of the vehicle actually mande the car more valuable than one that had not been damaged because 50% of the car was "new". So, which is worse?
