  • Mar-jer-in. This was not produced as a healthier alternative to butter. During WWII, butter products were strictly rationed because it was being sent to support soldiers. Civilians needed something comparable. Margarine production tripled. My 90 year old mother still thinks it's healthier. But I do the cooking. So, I use unsalted butter.

    • @@donnywilkes6417 yes, they are in our food to some degree. But I don't think the leaders of the world economic forum are talking about the few bug parts per thousand or million that are in a loaf of bread.

  • I remember in the fifties, Jello was everywhere. It was an outlet for homemakers' creativity - and the more creative the effort, the more inedible the result. But I would eat jello if I liked it, in spite of knowing where it comes from. Unless you keep kosher or you're vegan, I don't think it's a big deal.

    • It's factually correct, but it's the emotional angle that's cynical. I like haggis now and then. I know what it's made with, I buy the ones with artificial casing (you don't eat that anyway) and it's nutritionally fine. It was also my dog's absolute favourite food as a special treat. The USA in particular, has been bombarded for decades by the food manufacturers to accept margarine as an everyday alternative to natural butter. I can't stomach the stuff.
