When the military seized power through a coup in Myanmar, many around the world were caught by surprise.
The Southeast Asian country was on the road to democracy after millions voted for a second term of office for Aung San Suu Kyi and her National League for Democracy last November.
The BBC's Flora Drury explains what events led to the coup, and how the military has dealt with opposition in the past.

Being from Australia, I was glad I have more information about my birth country, but with the current constitution drafted by, then we have no hope to see whenever the army would relinquish its power.

  • The first problem of Myanmar lies on the thirst of the military generals. Remember 1947 assassination of Aung San (Suu Kyi's dad)? Because the military went rouge and they feared Aung San's ambition for a civilian, non-military interference government. For a country that has only begun to experience flawed democracy that has been installed by the military, then it appears the military of Myanmar has been corrupted from depth. But I believe this is also the same situation to every Burmese institutions: it has chosen wrong way and become captives of their own ambitions, which is the second problem. I have never been to Myanmar but I have used to experience war situation of the country when I was in India as a tourist. I have seen militants of different ethnic groups in that Western Myanmar running away, recalling that the Burmese Army was rouge, but the leadership is even worse because they did everything to profit themselves and not the poorer civilians; corrupt officials sometimes colluded with the military. That's why most of Myanmar is very undeveloped except the Irrawaddy region (Mandalay, Nayyidaw, Yangon). Suu Kyi was revered not because she has the economic and political capabilities, but rather because she is seen as the only key figure to unite different factions. Unless they establish an iron-fist regime similar to that of Vietnam or a quasi-democracy friendly Thailand, it won't be solved. British colonization aside, it could have been a different story had Burmese leadership not become so corrupt.

  • This is a very misleading headline. You made no attempt whatsoever to explain what led to the coup. You simply said no one knows. That, also, is completely untrue, of course as the junta will know why they acted when they did. So please use the English language correctly (or at least make an attempt so to do) and do not use misleading click-bait. To offer a longer, decent analysis concluding in we do not know why they acted is fine - and probably accurate - but don't do a lazy, quick re-cap and mis-sell it. Thank you.

The prisoners including life-sentenced that the military released are terrorizing the streets at night with arson and burglary, and military personnels who used to arrest and torture people for breaking curfew are nowhere to be found. Volunteers have to guard their neighborhood at night and already caught several terrorizing inmates whom we suspect, are drugged. Several drones flying over the neighborhood can be seen at night and we are afraid that Military might label our neighborhood volunteers as rioters and use those for their advantage. These activities are getting out of hand as the day go by. This is not the first time we suffered this type of violence. In 8888 uprising, they used the exact same strategy to terrorize at night and wearing down the protesters and normal citizens alike both physically and mentally. • Situation in Myanmar (Feb 13, 2021) Night are not safe anymore with serious violation of Basic Human Rights in Myanmar. The military just announced that they invoke article 419 to revoke article 5, 7 and 8 of 2008 constitution (basic human rights protection of the people ). The effects are: 1) they can arrest without warrants; 2) they can search the houses without the presence of the ward administrative officer; 3) they can track people down; 4) they can seek for information from the operators; 5) they can detain people for more than 24 hours. According to those, they can go in and out every house without any permission or warrent, and they can search everywhere and can arrest everyone. The military released the prisoners yesterday. The released prisoners tried to poison the apartment water tanks in several townships during night time. Yesterday Night, released prisoners throw "Fire Rings" and burning in most streets of Tharkayta, Yangon around 8:30PM. Tonight the prisoners were putting poison in the drinking water pipes of apartments in NgaMoeYeik Township, Yangon. Myanmar people have to build barriers around the streets or wards to protest themselves from the criminals released from prisons by the military. Local people arrest them and ask the prisons about who order them to do it. Please help us, please let world knows our situation.

  • If Aung San Suu Kyi believed she did nothing wrong, then why did she ignore or refuse to recount or investigate the ballots as requested by Military?? Because.. she knew Military will take over the Government and she also knew that she will be arrested by not taking any action on the request which was requested by Military.. And she knew exactly what will happen after she was detained by Military.. so.. Did she just throw a stone to catch two birds?? Of course.. First one is to escure herself to get out of trouble and second one is to get rid off Military once in for all.. It was a plot and well planned by Aung San Suu Kyi.. The question is.. Will it work?? Well, we all wait and see.

The 5 years before the 1st election it was when law was added and business to form which own up majority states of wealth in the country. The military then thought with the control of economy and 25% mandatory parliment will keep them in control. But the recent election and the pandemic had really show them they are not...

  • Former Colonial Anglo West has been consistently trying to divide Burma/Myanmar into pieces for ages. They have been watching and waiting for this opportunity at every corner and every turn in Myanmar's history since it gained Independence from Britain some seventy years ago. I may be wrong, but my gut feeling has been telling me this for a long time. Remember, Yugoslavia, the world leader of the Non-Aligned Movement during the Cold War, and what happened to that nation? Today, former Yugoslavia was divided and became six smaller nations, much thanks to the West. Slavery, Colonialism and Colonization, etc are evil things done and benefited by evildoers. In centuries-long old Colonial era, when the world was under Colonial Anglo Western control & influence; nations/ethnic groups in Asia, Africa, North & South America, were committing atrocities against one another (brother against brother, etc), all because Colonial West pit one group against another, which is the the ploy (such as, 'divide & conquer, divide & rule, divide & loot'), that were regularly used for their own Western advantages; what they call it, 'Anglo Western Interests'. It's all about 'Anglo Western Hegemony'. Do you know the fact that there are only two nations in the world that have been continuously engaged in fighting since WWII. They are USA and Myanmar. While wealthy USA, as a gang leader of Capitalist Imperialist Anglo West, would go all over the whole wide world to engage in wars, to loot bounties, and thus became evermore prosperous; impoverished Myanmar, on the other hand, is engaged in internal civil war, brother against brother, which causes everyone involved getting even more impoverished and destitute. So and so, this cycle of 'infighting and poverty' continues back and forth to this day. A sad truth indeed. Moreover, the Capitalist Imperialist West would go into the region/nation for their own interest, and then divide and conquer, divide and rule, divide and loot, pit one 'local group' against another. These 'local populace' that are used by the West or sided with the West, in the conflict/crisis/war, and when they are needed to be evacuated for one reason or the other, then the West will raise the issue about 'refugees'. This has been the case throughout history wherever the conflict the West is involved in. In fact, there were tens of millions of refugees here in the USA & other Western nations that the West brings in throughout history, past and present. Finally, Myanmar has had no politics for over two generations; so it's new for people there, young and old alike. In other words, it's easy to get fooled by the Capitalist Imperialist trick. Here in USA, the so-called 'Politics' is a little more than a 'Window Dressing' (mainly used by the wealthiest Capitalist/ the One Percent elite who are 'The Power That Be'/ the real ruler of the land), while 'Politicians' are merely 'Poster Boys' put it out as part of Democracy. Besides, Capitalist West's so-called 'Democracy, Freedom, and Human Rights', etc are just marketing terms used by the Rich/obscenely rich Capitalists from The Capitalist USA & the West to sell their game, subjugating the Poor throughout the whole wide world, and milking them for everything they can. In other words, Democracy, Freedom, and Human Rights are just marketing tools used by the Rich from the USA & the West to sell their game, subjugate and milk the Poor worldwide. In fact, a mere fifty (50) Capitalist elites from the USA & the West have more wealth than half the world population, which is nearly 4 billions. • In my humble opinion, the coups in Myanmar and some others around the world today are totally different from the coups which took place over half a century earlier when newly independent nations, including Burma, just came out of centuries-long Colonialism, bitter and poverty-stricken, turned to a new deal of Social-Democratic system (Socialism/Communism). Today's coups, in most cases, are change in political system only, while economic system are mostly left intact.
