  • I know it’s his native tongue, but Mr. Atkinson’s command over the English language is exemplary. His vocabulary, his diction, his articulation, his speech pattern, his perfect and crisp pronunciation of every word - every thing is total perfection. He makes the language sound so beautiful, it’s absolutely relaxing listening to him speak. Which is an irony considering he’s taking about Mr. Bean here. He may be known the world over for Mr. Bean but my favourite work of his is Blackadder. The man deserves a knighthood. Living legend.

    • His pronunciation is so measured and precise because, apart from being well educated and well spoken to begin with, he also suffered from a terrible stammer, and had to have quite a lot of speech therapy. Nice to hear him employ his native County Durham accent again though :-)

  • Timing, the key is timing. The way he told the story in the parts department, just keep focus on his timing. The way he delivers the lines. the story telling skills are beyond great. He's a genius of comedy no doubt.

  • The resemblance **pause** is uncanny. The way Rowan pauses gets him two laughs, instead of just one laugh had he completed the sentence straight up. That is timing. brilliant comic Rowan Atkinson. He knows how to get the most out of material.

    • The story isn't really that funny in and of itself, I've heard similar stories from other celebrities: random person thinks someone famous looks like who they actually are, but doesn't believe it's actually them. But the way Atkinsons constructs and delivers this story - the timing, the accent, the facial expressions - makes it absolutely hilarious. What a talent.

  • I was on a ferry a couple of years ago going between some of the islands in Greece. The boat was filled with people from all over the world, we were all sitting in rows looking up at this tiny tv on the wall, playing Mr. Bean. It was so magical seeing all these people from different places, speaking different languages all laughing together - truly one of the rare screen performances that has transcended language. BEAN!

    • He is everyone's icon back in the 1990's even as of the present. He is known through out the entire 7 continent where some do not even know the place exist. I do not even know if he is aware of how huge his stageis, it could not fit UK anymore that it needs the world.     • @@rixterz11 I think you need to do a bit more research on the subject. Actually, judging by your comment, you need to do an awful lot of research. Great Britain isn't just one island. There's enough regional *English* accents to confuse most English people, never mind the variety of Scots, Welsh, and Irish accents. And what about English people living abroad who pick up traces and inflections of local accents, but don't sound like the locals? What accent is that?

    • It's funny how people jump on statements like this, going on about how wrong it is, but they don't actually understand the language enough to realise the statement is 100% accurate. The statement was that he has _A_ British english accent. As in an accent from Britain in the English language. The statement doesn't say "THE British accent", so it could be any of the multitude of accents around the country. Specifying the language is also relevant if you want to separate it from the Celtic languages.

    • I think it's not the accent, it's really difficult to say what is true British accent, (different social groups speak with slightly different accent). So I guess his speech sounds so good and classy due to the perfect articulation of words. Most people don't bother learning the art of speaking, and actually to speak well and clearly requires additional practice and even learning.

  • 0:53 at that moment, that little laugh is he contemplating the whole story in his head and thinking: "yeah, this could be funny to be told", and then proceeds to do a perfect monologue where sometimes he breaks a phrase in three parts and sometimes he delivers a lot of secondary information at lightning speed. Smart is kind of an understatement about him.

  • His pronounciation of words speaks volume in terms of clarity. Listening to his voice is so relaxing. The fact that his astounding way of speaking is not used in Mr. Bean, a show that centers on farce and action.

  • Rowan Atkinson is a legend. His work as Mr. Bean will always stand the test of time and breaks down international barriers. The character is comedy genius. But oddly enough I think Mr. Bean does him a massive disservice. Everyone goes oh look it's Mr. Bean, when you look at his body of work and Rowan is simply one of the greatest comedians of all time imo. Look at all the comedy skits he has done, you could tell he was a bloody natural from Not the Nine O'Clock News when he was young. Then you have Blackadder which is gold! Not to mention Johnny English and he is the voice of Zazu in the Lion King! To me he perfected dry British humour. Mr. Bean I love but let's not reduce Rowan down to one of his characters.

  • I remember seeing an Interview with Rowan Atkinson where they ask him the same thing, he said he didnt want to bring back Mr Bean because he didn't want the character to look Old. He always wanted Mr Bean to stay relatively young. That way the Character seems almost timeless, ageless. Thinking about it i agree, i grew up with Mr Bean always looking a certain way, and while i know its just an actor, seeing him age would be pretty sad :(

  • Rowan reminds a lot of Eddie Murphy in the following way: He's very timid and reserved in normal conversation, not feeling the need to be funny all the time. However, he can suddenly and spontaneously burst into comedic genius and have people grabbing their chest in laughter with simple stories and voices.
