Synonymous with European nights at Anfield, Liverpool fans have long belted out Gerry and the Pacemaker's version of You'll Never Walk Alone in the terraces before games begin.
It has became one of the most well known and loved songs in football fan culture, but what are the songs origins when it comes to being so beloved on the red part of Merseyside - and why did it become Liverpool's own?
Written by Michael Walker, illustrated by Philippe Fenner.

  • as a Dortmund fan the song just means community for me. standing in the crowd, you are not just an individual but one part of a huge fan culture of the biggest sport in the world. the song belongs to liverpool, yes, but I think this is THE football song that unites all of us. we love football and no matter what colours we support, we are one family. football is a sport that needs two teams to be played. this means you need to give everything to support your team and you also have to pay respect for your opponent at any time. only together can football, the thing we love, be realized

  • What I love about YNWA is, it's not really a football song but a song about the up-and-down of life, about gathering the strength to get through setbacks, tragedies in life, and during that process we realize that there are people who will be with you and help you overcome those setbacks. That's what life should be, it won't never be easy-going but you and your families, your friends, your comrades will be better after heartbreaks. And Liverpool had so many difficult moments in its history, and it still stays strong after those. It simply resonates with me than other songs (especially the "Glory, Glory" song that Spurs, Man Utd and Leeds have), I always get emotional when listening to it.
