🌙 I have so many underhyped books from Australia and NZ that I feel like screaming into the void about! But one I think you might have a good time with is called The Dawnhounds by Sascha Stronach. It’s a Māori inspired sci-fantasy, it has pirates, it’s anti-cop and there’s weird mushrooms. It was one of those books that was a strong four star read but that I think about all the time. Can’t wait for book two later this year!
This one is actually on my tbr but now bumped up higher on the list!! Please scream about those books all the time
Forging A Nightmare by Patricia A. Jackson. It’s about the four horseman’s replacement, famine and a murder mystery all wrapped in one. It’s pretty awesome, fast paced and a well fleshed out world.
crying at the fact that i literally need to read all of these
Christeeeeeaa you must pick some up!
Great recommendations! I loved Arboreality. Two more I’d like to add are “The Probability of Everything” by Sarah Everett. It’s middle grade but don’t let that turn you off. This book is incredibly deep and heartbreaking. I can’t give the specific trigger warnings because that would destroy the magic of the book. The other is “The Never-Ending End of the World” by Ann Christy, a post-apocalyptic and dystopian story about survival after a unique event. It has a different take and I found it very interesting. 🎑
So many underated books to love. Unfortunately I did not connected with "Arboreality". A great underayed book is "Blood Over Bright Haven" by M. L. Wang.
AK Press has this Black Dawn series of books out that are imo severely underhyped. All the books in the series have themes of anarchy + sci-fi if that’s your thing and they’re all pretty short. Margaret Killjoy and adrienne maree brown are two authors I really enjoy reading and they both wrote books for the series.
Thank you for the recommendations! Is the Black Dawn series written by Joseph D'Lacey? Trying to add it to my storygraph list
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance No it’s a series in the sense that all the books share a common theme but aside from 2 they’re not sequels or even set in the same world. So there’s Grievers & Maroons by adrienne maree brown, Station Six by S.J. Klapecki, A Country of Ghosts by Margaret Killjoy, and Inversion by Aric McBay
I want to read every one of these books!! Surprisingly, you flapping books at us semi-aggressively is a great selling technique…at least for my brain, lol 😂 Thanks for such great recs!!
Omg i love nicky drayden! Dont know enough people who know who she is! Also mark oshiro is such a good author
The only one I had never ever heard of is Nicky Drayden. 🌙 Quick bio read she's in Austin, Texas! Like me! And the library has her books!!!
Yesssss
I read Rook & Rose and A Chorus of Dragons thanks to you and they are definitely favorites of all time. I have a hold on New Suns 2 on my Libby but I keep choosing Deliver Later, maybe this is the push I need to finally pick it up. I clearly need to prioritize more of your recs!🌙 Two books under 2000 ratings that I love are Empire of Exiles by Erin M Evans and Engines of Empire by Richard S. Ford.
I keep meaning to give Engines of Empire another go, was just very much not in the mood when I first picked it up
I haven't tried Master of Poisons...I do like classic fantasy lol the Rook and Rose trilogy definitely deserves more love.
Thanks for waving books at us; I loved the way you talked about these! Confession: I still need to finish the Rook and the Rose trilogy (and I loved the first) 🙈
Ooooo, a basically hidden gems list, niceee very excited to watch
Its funny because I started Arboreality this week off your recommendation and here you are mentioning it as I am halfway through it. Such a fun video and definitely need to get around to a few of these (although I am slowly catching up). It's also made me wonder what books I have on my shelf that are under-reviewed. But that's future me problems.
I recently read Escaping Exodus and while I ADORED the darkness and the viscosity and the worldbuilding, the plot / story left me kind of cold. I feel like that could have been better done. But I will continue to read the sequel and other books by Drayden, for sure!
🌚 I have five of these authors/books on my TBR - Lord, Carrick, Clark, Liu, Lyons - but several (most!) I just haven’t got to yet. Well, one less because I haven’t actually received the Karen Lord book yet but it’s on its way in the next few days. I’m counting it because your recs (yes, yours!) have got through and nudged it onto my next haul. It just got (re?)released over here 🇬🇧 so I’d been waiting for that. I think the next two come out in April and June with their shiny new cover art. I’ll pick them up later in the year.
🤭 "the PEEople" 🤣 I'm sorry for my 6 year old sense of humor, but I can't get this outta my head. 100% brainworm!
I haven’t read any of these books I’m new to book tube and reading again! Life took over I read as a kid teenager and college then adulting took over
You are such a good influence on my reading habits! Can’t thank you enough for introducing me to so many good series. There’s still a few on this list I haven’t read yet, so they’re going straight on the TBR!
Which ones???
@@LiteratureScienceAllianceGoliath, Master of Poisons and though I’m not usually a short story fan, I’m going to give those New Suns collections a shot too!
Awesome vid!! It’s so frustrating when something we love that we also think could have some wider appeal lays largely undiscovered. I haven’t yet read any of these but have a bunch on the shelf ready to go since I’ve been following here for a while-your enthusiasm for them is infectious!
Hey 👋🏾👋🏾👋🏾Wow! I added so many of your recommendations to my TBR. Thank you!
Hope you find a new favorite!
Good idea for a video. Best wishes for your reading choices.
I've been trying to hype up The Surviving Sky since it came out 😅
Wonderful video thanks so much! My TBR just got longer! 😂🌚
Fantastic list of books I'd never heard of or knew only a little about. Your taste is ✨immaculate✨
Thank you so much for the kind words 💜
I actually just ordered the Best of All Possible Worlds as part of a treat-yourself order last week, so I’m excited! Nicky Drayden is also high on my list to try this year! I’ve never read the Dandelion Dynasty but I’ve loved his short story collections and the other works that he’s translated into English. You sold me on Arborealist after mentioning the setting of Vancouver island! 🌕
Hope you enjoy the books you have gotten off of my recommendation!
You were the one who convinced me read the chorus of dragons series, I've read the first three so far and I absolutely love it (Kihrin is such a loveable MC). I also read the grace of kings and loved it; wall of storms is on my shelves so I'm gonna pick it up soon! I bought the ebook for mask of mirrors and will hopefully pick it up this year too. I love your recommendations so much! I have a soft spot for adult fantasy and sci-fi books that feel like they're undertaking a project and aren't afraid to be intricate with its exploration of themes and ideas. I also added Karen Lord's books to my TBR to look into after I get the aforementioned ones out of the way :))
Kihrin is the best! But glad to know I was right that my audience doesn't need to be screamed at, just needed to cathartically tell the internet void to read these awesome books!
I had a Jenn Lyons book in my hands today but had already picked up too many books so I put it back 😩 I’m going to read her one of these days.
Hopefully sooner rather than later 🤞🏽
Super agreed about New Suns 1/2, And What Can We Offer You Tonight, and Arboreality! Such good books.
I am still so happy you also liked Arboreality!
So many great book series !! Goliath is one I feel like I'll love but not sure when Im getting to it, hopefully sooner rather than later. The Best of All Possible Worlds just got an official UK release, so ill definitely be reading it now (or at least its now back in print, as it was super hard to find last year haha) I do also need to get into short story collections, but after reading that horror one last year Im kinda interesting in giving Scifi and fantasy ones another go (had tried Ted Chiang last year and just wasnt hooked by any id read before putting it down)
The Best of All Possible Worlds was released there when it first came out but the re-release probably just happened! I know this cause the cover I always show is the original UK cover 😅and I bought the UK hardbacks. Also totally get short stories aren't for everyone. I think Terraform would be good for seeing what you may like or not like in a sci-fi short story.
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance ah perfect, Ill give Terraform a shot. I like the sound of it having shorter short stories. I think for me the longer the short the less it works
Gosh, it pains me to see so many of my shared faves not getting the love they deserve. I will just keep screaming into the void about all of these hidden gems together with you!! Also, thanks for the reminder that I need to read more Nicky Drayden, I loved the Escaping Exodus duology! Some of my personal favourite underhyped books are The Wickwire Watch by Jacquelyn Hagen, Sistah Samurai by Tatiana Obey, Legacy of the Brightwash by Krystle Matar, An Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors by Curtis Craddock, Renia by Karl Forshaw, and The Necessity of Rain by Sarah Chorn! 🌙
One day I shall get to an Alchemy of Masques and Mirrors, I promise!
I bought Goliath on your recommendation and I am really looking forward to getting into it once I’m past comic con and am reading again instead of sewing cosplay.
Yay!! Hope it works for you, we also have a very indepth discord channel for it if you need a place to see other's thought/express your own as you get to it!
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance awesome, thank you, I just joined!
These all sounds so interesting! 👀🌚
Hope you found something fun to add to the tbr!
As a lover of underdogs I love this list! I read Arboreality based on your rec last year! It's really good but even though it's a hopeful clisci book I found it really depressing. 😆 Do highly recommend it though. It's beautifully written (also the cover won an Aurora award)!
I think I just appreciated that it wasn't THE MOST fatalistic thing haha and I did love seeing the community at the end
Added many of those to the TBR list. A recent underhyped book I read: Isaac Steele and the Forever Man with 523 Goodreads ratings.
Will have to check it out!
🌕🌕🌕 you have multiple shelves in my little library dedicated to books you have recommended 🤠 you are absolutely brilliant and I love your passion. Question have you ever read Babel-17 by Samuel R. Delaney? It is one of my absolute favourite books and both the prose and audio versions are amazing 😃
Thank you for the recommendation and the extra kind words 💜
I have Elysium at the library waiting for me 😍
Yesssss hope its a good confusing time for you!
I loved the surviving sky! I couldn't put it down 🌛
That makes me happy, it was a pretty good action packed time
Oh wow, I did not expect most of these books on this list, had to go and check the rating numbers. 😱 Loved The Unbroken; The Best of All Possible Worlds really didn't work for me (I can't deal with the "we have to make babies"), which I'm pretty bummed about, I need more Trek-like things. Rook & Rose... Ahhh I was in a weird brain space when I tried to read it and I couldn't get into it, but have been thinking about it since, so I'm hoping to give it another go soon. The Dandelion Dynasty also doesn't work for me, historical fiction just isn't my thing it seems. A Chorus of Dragons though. Best books I've read in quite a while, absolutely love everything about them, and can't wait to read again.
What's interesting about Best of All Possible worlds is in future books I know what did/didn't happen with their family planning. Like the paradigm shifts dramatically quickly Also similarly Dandelion Dynasty only has historical fantasy feelings for the first book. If you are curious about how the tone shifts you can check out my review or try the first few hundred pages of Wall of storms. Cause its becomes alternative history sci-fi from books 2 on imo. But also totally cool that these things don't work for you!!
🌖🌗🌘🌑🌒🌓🌔 My underrated authors (with under two thousand ratings according to GoodReads): - Stephen Graham Jones - Zora Neale Hurston - Sarah Tolmie - K. J. Parker - Yuri Herrera
All the Stephen Graham Jones books that I have read have more than 2000 or best believe I would have been waving my copies at people!
@@LiteratureScienceAlliance You’ve only read his big novels so far. The majority of his books are so underrated.
@@SheWasOnlyEvie in my defense you gave me Mongrels haha and he writes lots of novellas and those also tend to trend lower. In terms of horror author numbers he seems to do really well. Cause outside of King those tend to perform poorly on goodreads
🌕
I'd yell about my favorite fantasy book ever and how it should have a lot more ratings... but it's exclusively in my native language (Serbian), soooo 😭
Boooo if it ever gets a translation you will have to let me know!
🌖 🌕 🌙
I should probably just read all of these books lol
I think The Unbroken might be a contender for you!
