  • I read 15 books this year, which passed my goal of 10! Slow readers unite :) It's also the most I've read in years, grad school really did a number on my reading-for-pleasure habit haha. One Hundred Years of Solitude was by favourite read by far, but honourable mention to The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas, which I picked up because of this channel :)

  • 1984 is so good that if I was on a plane with my parents that was about to crash and there were only three parachutes on board, I would give the first parachute to me, the second to my copy of 1984 and the third one to 1984 as a backup in case its other parachute failed. I'd probably be devastated later when I'd realise books can't use parachutes but I'm not good under pressure to be honest.

  • i read 29 books in 2023 which is a pretty big feat for me since i’m dyslexic. my favorite book was definitely “sula” by toni morrison, i highlighted and underlined almost every line [“..she wanted to be in a very small, very bright place. small enough to contain her grief. bright enough to throw into relief the dark things that cluttered her.”] i think that female friendships teeter between unconditional love and obliteration, the main characters, sula and nel, survive through each other. the second one is “in the dream house” by carmen maria machado which is a queer memoir told in fragmented metaphors of houses/homes. it is gorgeous and heartbreaking, it reads like poetry and the pages might as well turn themselves. the third one is “slaughterhouse five” by kurt vonnegut, i rarely read classics but this is a book i think about almost every day. i think that the violence we drive into ourselves (especially after a traumatic event) goes unnoticed until it becomes bigger than us. this book explores that and it’s also quite whimsical, which breaks the tension of atmosphere.

This is coming from me who is dealing with severe concentration problems and shortened attention span - sometimes even watching a 30 second video is tiring and impossible for me. After reading this book I've purchased my first and the only bookish t-shirt and I wear it now when I'm listening to you. Luckily, I don't burst in tears by just looking at my t-shirst beacuse this book really got me. This book and Normal People by Sally Rooney are the most powerful tearjerkers I've ever read.

You actually inspired me to read Orlando this year and even tho I only gave it a 3.75 rating Im rlly glad I read it as it was such an experience, also one of my faves series is the raven cycle so im so happy you enjoyed the raven boys and hope you continue to enjoy the series:) x

Your enthusiasm about your favorite books is so contagious, I'll have to check out some of them! The entire list of the GoT this year is so good, I hope I can catch up on some of these too 🤞🏻 Some of my favorites of 2023 were 100 yrs of solitude (I also love me some solitude lol), Everyone in my family has killed someone, The bear and the nightingale etc... • It makes me so unbelievably happy to hear you talk about Brothers Karamazov and especially about your love of Ivan. I absolutely adore him too, and I had a feeling you might when you and Carolyn first announced you’d be reading it haha. The first time I read that book, and especially when he first sits down alone with Alyosha and the two talk, my world absolutely changed. Like you say, reading Ivan is like being seen and being felt; it is unreal. Rereading that book along with the game of tomes bookclub this year, I got to relive that and it was incredible. Impacted me now more than ever, so thank you for that. My favourite new book of the year was definitely Less Than Zero by Bret Easton Ellis. I’m not even sure why - i just feel in my bones that nothing caught me in its web so fully. Its sequel was good too, albeit more twisted and uncomfortable. Will deffo be taking a few of this amazing list as inspo for 2024s TBR - hope you have a lovely year 🫶

  • Great list Emma!! Agree so much with the classics on here, mostly because I haven’t read some of the others. Just a comment - to me, A Farewell to Arms was precisely about the war, a very strong statement on the futility and hopelessness of war and how it affects people, and the relationship between Henry and Catherine was just a metaphor for that. I think that’s why they don’t feel like deeply drawn characters. The starkness of his prose contributes to it’s power.

In 2022 I read 52 books in 52 weeks and in 2023 I read 73 books, but that December of 2022 I must have cleared my head and came up with some ideas and in 2023 14 books that I read fell in the top 40 books of all time and so over one third of my favorite books were read last year. It isn't how many books you read so much as what you read and what you got out of it. Follow authors, genre, people who you trust who recommend books to you, and make a list of your favorite books to help guide you. I ended 2021 with finally making a top 100 favorite books of all time and it seemed to help me focus on Russian for 2022 and then classics in 2023. These are my top 14 books for the year 2023. 1) “The Insulted and Humiliated” by Fyodor Dostoevsky 2) “Vilette” by Charlotte Brontë 3) “Chesapeake” by James A. Michener 4) “Poland” by James A. It’s my favorite book of all time and I am always thinking about it to the point that I can discuss about it endlessly. Also, since Dance Dance Dance was your favorite read last year, I would like to suggest my favorite among Japanese work that I read in 2023. It’s a series, The Sea of Fertility tetralogy by Yukio Mishima. The 4 books are Spring Snows, Runaway Horses, The Temple of Dawn and The Decay of the Angel. I recommend reading them in the order above, The Decay of the Angel is the kinda book that will make you re-evaluate the entire tetralogy at the last few pages but in a good way, if that makes sense.

Written on the Body is now an all time fave, just gorgeous ❤✨

  • the way my jaw dropped so far down when you mentioned the raven cycle, that series is one of my all time favourites and changed my life in so many insane ways, its so perfect and timeless and full of so many times of deep pure love, and is what got me to have a deep appreciation for the found family trope, i will never not enjoy it ill be reading it and crying when im on my deathbed.

  • Omg being a Taylor Swift fan, I got the reference too quick😂😂😂 for Brothers Karamazov "would've could've should've" song😂😂 I bought this book last year, not knowing it was also one of the books you'll regret. Actually, now I'm thinking there's a lot of 5 star reads you recommended that you regret reading. I guess tragic books are that good, huh! Now I'm skeptical to reading Brothers Karamazov but since you said 5 stars, I might try it when I'm in a good mood, only to regret it lol😂

  • What a perfect timing! I was just rewatching some of your older videos, because I just felt like I was missing a friend 🥰 I am always in awe of how you talk about books, there is just so much passion in how you discuss what you love, which I find inspiring. I would love seeing an updated bucket list of books. I love themes of memory in books too, I am actually considering one day writing a thesis relating to that (if I ever end up writing a thesis😂). I would love love love to see a recs video relating to that and I personally recommend The Book of Chameleons, by José Eduardo Agualusa to anyone who is interested in themes of memory, the past and Identity. I hope 2024 treats you kindly! Thank you for your comforting, cozy and honest content ❤

  • now i wanna read them all 😭😭😭 my favorite book of 2023 was 'House of spirits' by Isabel Allende, can't wait for you to finally read one of her books. i think you'd really like this one, it resembles One hundred years of solitude A LOT in the beginning but as it goes on it picks its on path. this year i also read 'The phantom of the opera' for the first (100% because it's one of your favorite books) and I absolutely loved it. it's one of those you can't put away until you finish it and it's soooo rich on the details and the ways you can read from the perspectives of each one of the characters. thank you so much for the great content every year. wishing you a lovely 2024 ❣️

  • I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed 1984, it’s among my all time favourites, although I’m a bit surprised that you think the second half was weaker. I think the last few chapters are absolutely brilliant, but I might be a bit biased, because I wrote my BA thesis on the torture scenes. Hope you have a wonderful 2024!

  • Your notes on "The Hotel" and how you can differently occupy the space made me think of the Hotel Mille-Collines in Rwanda. You might enjoy "A Sunday at the Pool in Kigali" Also, I've been really into books that explore characters who are afraid of being perceived after reading "The Bee Sting" by Paul Murray (fave book of 2023, maybe fave book released in the past decade) so when you mentioned that as a character note from "Good Morning Midnight", I was instantly excited. My other best books of 2023 were "The Remains of the Day" and "the Magic Toyshop"

  • my favorite two books of the year were Severance by Ling Ma, and The Apology by Jimin Ha. They both deal with generational trauma, grief and loneliness. They’re by chinese american and korean american authors, so there’s also some about migration, culture and assimilating to a new culture, more in Severance. They’re both so beautifully written and with amazing main characters. I hope you give them a try!!

Moreover, your videos bring me so much comfort, and inspired me to study literature.
