Jack being shocked how smart the alphabetical organizations is when that's literally what Libraries do. 😂 love you jack.
First by genre then by alphabet! :)
Most libraries use the Dewey decimal system. I once worked with someone who had previously worked in a library. She arranged her personal book collection using the Dewey decimal system. I think it's a bit over complicated for most home libraries.
@@kinolibby6580 Omg as a librarian that sounds like a nightmare! xD There are so many ways you can do DDC, like if you have a middlegrade fantasy book written by an English author, you can sort that literature --> middlegrade --> fantasy --> from England, or you could sort it literature --> English literature --> English fantasy literature --> English fantasy literature for children, and so on and so on, we had to use DDC for an assignment and I did books from the same series just to demonstrate how confusing it can be (even after we forget the discrimination and biases built into the system to begin with). Will say I admire the dedication of someone organising their home library after it hahah
@@kinolibby6580 we use Dewey for nonfiction to organize by subject, but fiction is typically alphabetical by author in a separate section. Sometimes genre fiction will also be separated out from general fiction, like a romance section or fantasy/science fiction.
The «sibling»-book issue is ususlly fixed in library’s by sorting by last name rather than book title 👍
Ok but I don’t think we’ve moved on from you arranging your books like it’s an indie bookstore/café. That was so cool ❤
Agreed
omgosh yes
Exactly!!!!
I worked in a bookstore for over 20 years, so my own home library (which is quite extensive) is like the store. I have them sorted into genre (fiction, romance, sci-if/fantasy, mystery, non-fiction) and then within each genre the books are alphabetically arranged by authors surname. I can always find anything with my eyes closed. It is sooooo satisfying having such order…..must be my type A personality!
This is it. This will be my system once I move and get proper bookshelves.
Yeah this is what I wanna do but I got no money lmao 😭
This is literally how I have them sorted as well!!
This is the only sensible system, that's why libraries and stores do this as well. You want to be able to find stuff quickly!
I want to do that! Though knowing me that system wont last long, my shelf is just "vibes and how often i read them" and its the most effective for me
as a bookseller of 7 years, I don't understand the rainbow hate 😭 as someone who remembers books solely by how they look (I often forget authors names and organizing alphabetical by title seems diabolical to me for some reason). I have a separate shelf for my series and favourites so all of my random standalones are by colour and IT'S CUTE OKAY! IT BRINGS ME JOY!
same ❤ i have such a visual memory 😂
same! I'm a graphic designer and I pick and choose book editions by my opinion on the design. So they're all memorable. But I definitely will do a gradient within each color. Dark red and light poppy red are not the same and my brain knows itN 😂t
SAME!!! I have less than 50 books and they are all in alphabetical order except for the series bc I felt bad separating the books. Though I have diagnosed adhd, so the bad memory makes sense 😅
The only reason i hate it for my own home is because I have soooo many series. If you mainly have stand alone books i don't think its bad at all. Looks pretty on the shelf. Just doesn't work for people like me.
@@CallistoTheWarriorQueen I have all my series together on a separate shelf and then all my standalone books in rainbow order. Some series have the same color so they can also be added to the rainbow. Maybe you could try something like that?
Unhinged, but I sometimes sort my books by original publishing year, it is strangely satisfying to see all your books in a historical context, and I always get surprised which books were published around the same time
This is the same way I do it. It's like seeing a peek into history. I kinda love it.
this is how i used to do this as a kid! and now i kinda wanna do this again lol.
That’s so interesting! I’ve never thought of this method!
ok but what abt the series? are they just separated 😭😭
@@sophiahaley8734 I do this for for authors, I have my books organised alphabetically and then by publication date, as such most authors this is completely fine, any authors that write series it is also fine, the only trouble is when authors write two series simultaneously however have gotten round this by using the date that the first one in the series was published and continuing on
And then there is me: arranging my books by the time I've finished reading them. Like a personal timeline.
That is a wonderful idea! Never thought of that before.
@@doratheexplorer8390 you can really see how your taste in books is changing over the years! The only problem is: I can't rearrange it because how would I remember the order 😭
Yesss i do this! So satisfying to look back at a chunk of books and remember your reading year, or a particular summer! I write in the front cover the date I finished the book. On the question of ‘how would I put them back’, recently I moved house and I took photos of all my shelves before moving so it was easy to reconstruct the right order!
ooohhhhhh, love this
@@jil8091You could just take pictures of the order they're in, or write it down. Then, if you were to want to try a different organizing way some time-you can.
Alphabetical will always be my favourite, you always know where each book is
good for a collection of large books, but you might split up series's :(((
@@itssimplylolaASMRno....it's alphabetical. You don't...Thats literally the reason to organize it that way, so that authors and series are together
@@eliaz_...34some people organise it by books or by author! If by author they would all be next to each other, but twilight and new moon, for example, wouldn't be. Author is probably more sensible though
@@itssimplylolaASMR I think most people would assume alphabetical as being by author's last name.
@@itssimplylolaASMR I meant by the author's surname, else you would have way too many books starting by "the" together
i organize my bookshelf based on how well i think the characters in one book would have vibed with the characters in the book next to it
That's super cute!
Relatable
😂
So coooolll idea 😂
What if you have a book full of assholes?
Procrastinating organising my living space, by watching Jack organise his.
At this point Jack just treats his shelves like a giant toy 😂
Honestly, this is what collectors do. We use the stuff, but we also categorise, rearrange, catalogue... it's part of the fun of owning the collection.
@@kyris66 100% agree!
Honestly goals though? I look forward to the day when I have enough room to fool around, rearranging my books every which way and not have to use half my bookshelves for storage. For now I'm living vicariously through Jack. ☺
the "this are my red books versus my unread books" was top tier thank you
As someone from a non English-speaking country, having a translated category/genre is still one of my biggest culture shocks. If I wanted to do anything like that I would probably have to do a national category or something 😅
hahhaha true! i organise mine by language first and then alphabetical… but actually i’ve see. my local book store organise by countries actually!
Same. I never understand how things like translated books or films with subtitles can be their own genre.
I live in Greece and it’s so weird to me too! Nowadays the majority of people read translated books but I think it’s really a cultural thing. English is such a dominant language that lots of native English-speakers sort of think of it as the “default”. I used to live in the uk and they would pretty much never show foreign tv programmes on the tv, but here in Greece we have a really nice balance of both. You can turn on the tv and watch French or german documentary on one channel and then an Italian drama series on another, Greek comedy on another one and English movie on another. I really like it
@@nwondering8732I'm like ..... that's basically the majority of everything for countries that don't have English as their native language😂 films with subtitles are sooooo normalised in the Netherlands😂 basically every film that's not Dutch or a movie that's targeted towards children (only dubbings we allow) would be categorised as a *film with subtitles/foreign film* Cinemas in the Netherlands literally show 90% of the time films with subtitles😂😂😂 the only exceptions are films for children since they will be dubbed in Dutch or legit Dutch made movies😂 Disney & Pixar (and like movies such as The Mario Bros Movie) are both available as subtitled and dubbed😂 With books is depends on your age: for instance for young children we have soooo many books available that are translated/foreign & native based. For teenagers and young adolescents the majority of the books will be translated. But for adults I think a lot of books would be written by native authors. But there's also a huge variety of translated literature available. But for book nerds around my age we've become snobs😂 since we prefer to read books in their native language which 99% of the time happens to be English😂 apparently we love reading in a foreign language rather than our own native language. (I only started doing it because it was cheaper😂 and now I'm teaching English)
@@hanna3685 As somebody from a non-English speaking country who ended up not reading American books… I would love for bookstore to create sections for each country. It would make my life so much easier 😢
the genre organization will always be the most satisfying and sustainable for me, bc you can within it you can organize it alphabetically or by color. It just always bring satisfaction and little joy to my heart
Pro-tip for shelf organizing: Something I started doing was saving a shelf for all my unreads (I call it my shame shelf lol). Having them all in one place really encourages you to pick up a book you already own instead of buying new ones
Otherwise, I also think organizing by genre is the best (though I do alphabetical by author within the genres, so it's kind of a mix of both)
Uh...... That would be all my books basically:| would make more sense to make a read shelf I guess
I also have a shelf dedicated to my unread books!
I completely agree - I keep my books in order of when I read them, I find it very satisfying to look at a chunk of books and remember a particular reading year or a summer etc! And then you can look at the unread section and see what appeals from there
I do this!!
watching jack organize books is my therapy
Organization is so personal. I (trigger warning) am a rainbow shelf person. I remember my books best by what the covers look like. When in rainbow order, I can find the books I am looking for way more quickly. I do keep my series on a separate shelf so they don’t get broken up but I also don’t own many series. 🌈 I’ve tried other methods, but I always go back to rainbow. I also find that similar books are in similar colors anyways. My thrillers are mostly all balck/grey. Mental health tend to be green/blue. My non-fiction are mostly tan/white.
Never thought of this way but it totally makes sense. Also, personal bookshelves are for what makes one’s heart happy so 🌈
love this, rainbow shelves are really cute even if they arnt my personal preference 🌈
Rainbow shelves aren’t my personal preference, but I’ve always thought they’d work well for someone who can remember their books more visually! Also, I do think they can look pretty cool, even if I don’t want to organize my shelves that way.
me too!!
Same, I only remeber by color lol
I love rainbow shelves. Bonkers that so many hate them and that you “didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would.” Like it’s gorgeous. Not practical, but stunning.
What i love very much is sorting by genre and then having the individual groups sorted by color. You have the genre together which just feels like it makes sense, but you can still do a color gradient on the individual shelves which i think still gives a great aesthetic.
how about a 🌈 not from top to bottom but from left to right. you'd start by putting an equal number of red books on each shelf and then distribute the next colour and so on. that way you could also do transitions, like putting turquoise or teal in between green and blue
can we take a second to appreciate jack's quick witted one liners? and yellow I am doing well :)
Always! I love that about his videos!!
Those cute puns 😂
Oh my gosh! What if you arrange it by genres (but arrange the genre names by alphabet) then within that you arrange the books by alphabet (like all the books that start with the same letter) but within the alphabets you arrange them by colour😆 that would be the most epic book arrangement of all time!
I organise my bookshelf by genre then within the genre it's alphabetical, honestly makes it so easy to find specific books
That is a a multi-episode idea brilliant idea 😄
I do it by genre except I arrange by size as well
Same! @@deniseharris9802
I feel this would just end up looking just as scattered as a non-sorted bookshelf.
I'm honestly a big fan of rainbow bookshelves BUT not if you organise your whole home library like this (I mean you do you but I wouldn't personally LMAO). However, if you have like a small shelf over your desk/bed or somewhere else where it stands out, I think it looks amazing when it's filled up by books sorted by color. You can keep your favorite stand-alones there & don't have to worry about splitting up series, while keeping some of your books looking very aesthetically pleasing
I did my kid’s books in rainbow, it actually made them both read more and put them back in place! Highly recommend for children’s books! The rest we actually arrange by the author’s culture, so American, British, Scandinavian, European, African and Asian, all placed roughly like the world map. 🌍
If I had that big of a library I’d just be reorganizing it every week. Idk why, but organizing makes me happy, so this was amazing!
“The vibes are quite different with MAUS and HEARTSTOPPER” 😆 Also I love that you have more of my translations than all Fitzcarraldo editions 🙏💜
I adore that alphabetical is misspelled in the title. It's perfect
Lol you must be a teacher,my sister was and corrected me all my life🥰
@@ODEY-G0 Hahaha! I'm not, but I have been told I should be!
Petition for Jack to get a separate shelf to display his clothbind collection. Those were gorgeous.
I spent ages doing mine alphabetical by author a few years ago but it makes it so much easier to add new books now! When I buy new books by an author on my shelf, I know exactly where to put it and if it’s a new author I can easily work out where it goes. I now have an excel spreadsheet with all the last names of authors on my shelves in alphabetical order and then when I get a new book from a new author I just put it at the end of the list and then sort the row by alphabetical order again and it just goes to where it should be. I used to have my shelves sorted by colour when I was little but now they’re in alphabetical order I would never go back! 😂
and such a good way to keep track of the number of books!! if i ever stop being an e-reader girly i will be adopting this system :)
happiness ❤
Love a good spreadsheet
Living for the home library content please continue milking it
I am a fan of people organizing it whichever way they like. My personal fave is genre/theme/vibe because we decorate each section accordingly. We have a globe on our science shelf, bronze thinking men holding up our classics shelf, a spell jar on our witch shelf (yes there is a whole shelf dedicated to witches lol), miscellaneous trinkets in a shadow box on our miscellaneous shelf, and a treasure chest on our action/adventure shelf. There are so many, but those are my favorites. Edit: I have two kids, so my shelves have to accommodate a crap ton of graphic novels. No decor on those shelves since we are fully packed
As a bookseller, it's very validating to hear Jack talk about how much effort/thought goes into sorting books by alphabet and genre 😅
Organizing by genre hard because of sub genres and crossovers and vibes. I do it by very general genres within age categories.
Watching Jack organising books while working for a deadline that is due at 3am is unbelievably fun for no reason
Timestamps! If anyone wants to watch a certain part again! 00:00 to 1:14 = Introduction 1:15 to 6:14 = Rainbow bookself 6:15 to 9:15 = Alphabetical order 10:57 to 22:06 = Genre order Loved this video! I really wanna do the rainbow bookshelf for my own room !!
As a bookstore employee, the best way to organize your books is by publishing house, then by collections (like with Penguin, all Penguin Classics are all together, etc.). Most satisfying and very clear to easy to find each book.
I can’t believe you put The Poppy War on the YA shelf 😂 I am very much an “alphabetized by author” person, though I’ve recently been keeping my unread books on a separate shelf to make them easier to find.
Glad I'm not the only one that noticed The Poppy War there 😂 I don't think he has read it yet
He needs a TBR shelf!!
I’m so glad you finally have a system 🤣 As a former bookseller, and current control freak, it bothers me when my books aren’t alphabetised. For extra clarity, I’d alphabetise within each genre. But it looks like you’ve found a system that works well for you.
My favorite was the alphabet organization because those letters at the start of each group looked so stylish. If I ever have my own official home library, I will steal your idea. Thanks for another fun video!
My mom is super, SUPER into books, we have I think four bookshelves in our main living area plus a super tiny one for toddler books (there are no toddlers currently living in the house, but they're still good to have), plus one regular-sized bookshelf in each of the bedrooms. The ones in the living area (except for the toddler books) are sorted the way libraries do it, by genre, and then within the genre alphabetically by author's surname. It works so well! If there's ever a book I need to find, I can ask my mom and she knows exactly where it is. This is unrelated, but I also wanted to mention we have a little free library in our front yard that she runs, that's how into books my mom is.
I arrange my books by their year of original publication which, inexplicably, comes so natural for me. I like to see a work in it's historical context and it's so satisfying to shelf a new book. It's a bit like being on some expedition, you never know what you'll find next because it's neither in alphabetical order nor arranged by genre or colour.
As someone with adhd I'm so impressed watching you take on this task THREE times and completing it every time rather than getting overwhlemed at 90% finished!? mind blown ahahaha
I actually kind of use all three systems. I organise by genre but within genre grouped by author. And then as much as possible within that system I order them by height colour so that each section is aesthetically pleasing. Sounds much more complicated than it is, but then I don’t have 1000 books to deal with…
Please do genre and then alphabetise them!!! Need this full organisation fr
also you need a tbr shelf 100%
yessssss
I sort my bookshelves by genre / grouping all the books by one author too, it came kinda natural. I don’t have as many books as you do so I don’t have the need for super specific sub categories but I’m really happy with it. I do keep my unread books on a separate shelf but I “only” have like 30 at a time so it’s manageable.
I appreciated the clarification about Loveless 💜 you’re always so considerate Jack! also happy Ace week to everyone!
I think certain kinds of books work well by color - I find it easier to remember the colors of spines on children’s books than any others. I want to be able to find books quickly so I keep read and unread books on separate bookcases. Then sort by genre than by authors last name. I have a lot of manga that are different colors within the same series and I could go crazy if they were split up 😂 I do like the way color shelves look though.
You could also use the letters for each genre, H for horror, L love, C classics etc..
I have always organised by colour, then alphabetical order, and a separate shelf for collections/series. It’s so satisfying to organise by colour and I love the look of different sizes
Honestly all three ways are SO satisfying. I loved them all. But the genre organization lets you do so much grouping that's meaningful to you AND practical, and it's clear how excited you are. Gotta love it 👌
I put series together and then I organize my books by "where is still space for a book?". (Too many books, not enough shelves. 😢)
Librarian here, you can also combine alphabet + genre for maximum efficiency I don't have that many books at home, so I have devided my "home library" into genre + languages I also have a designated shelf for my favourite books :>
best way to organise a bookshelf: by genre and inside the genre by author last name and inside the author by release order.
the genre/vibe way is amazing, showstopping, spectacular!! so satisfiying to see the collections together. i was staring at my screen saying "yess!!" the entire time. SUCH a beautiful collection.
I’ve personally decided the ultimate organisation system is diving books first into genre, then organising the books in each genre by alphabetical. Then it works for if you want to pick out a book, or just need to find one you are already set on. If you want to find one you just need to think what it’s main genre is, then find it in the whichever section it is in depending on the author’s surname. I know genre can be subjective but it’s unlikely you’ll have to search through more than 3 genres before you find it. The only drawback I’ve thought of is if you are the one organising it it’ll obvs take some time, but you could always just go off what genre Waterstones or some other website classes it as.
Jack is so adorable in this video. His joy is so infectious even with something as simple as organizing a bookshelf 🥲
My library was once like this, but then I moved, and moved again, and again, and now I’m just happy they are on shelves. But by genre is definitely the way to go, and I like that you’ve added ‘vibe’ as well. 🦋
That is how my bookshelf is organized! A few of the fun subsections I have: Stoicism, Mid-century children's illustrated verse/poetry, and on Color. That said, I realized that most fiction I've read I do not own a physical copy. Even a few of my favorite ones. Sometimes it takes organizing books by genre to realize your favorite reading interests and what type of books you like in physical form rather than ebooks or audio!
The library looks so cool, I absolutely love it! Not a criticism, just an aboservation: as a non native English speaker and someone who reads in two languages, having translated books as a category is bonkers to me. So many of the books I read in my native language are translated from English, so if I organize my books with translated books as a category I will have one huge clump of translated books and one shelf of novels and poetry.
I barely manage to clean my bookshelfs with 500 books once a year and you manage to rearrange yours a few times for one video? I'm in awe I admire the dedication
I loved the last part where you kinda explained why it was more satisfying than maybe the more aesthetic choices and tbh that's what so rewarding about organizing your own library--you get to make choices that reflect you as reader and I think that's so neat (like the Joan Didon shrine and the Poetry->Shakespeare Poetry->Plays transition)! Congrats on the new setup :D
It was fun watching you experiment with the other approaches, but like you, I love the genre/vibe approach! It's pretty much what I've been doing without formally thinking about it. Just finding a way that makes sense to you, makes sense to me!
Alphabetical, by author, is definitely my favorite way to arrange my own library of books. Color just seems silly to me and more for aesthetic as opposed to utility. Genre would be hard because there are books that fall under more than one genre/subgenre. It's interesting to see what people choose. I know, if I had a much smaller collection of books, I might be more "adventurous," but I just can't afford to be, considering the amount I have.
Okay, but how brilliant was Jack's reaction after he finished organising them genre-wise!!!! WERE THOSE TEARS because I wholeheartedly approve!!! Also, the way Jack talks about books is superior.
The final version looks absolutely stunning!! Definitely the best one!
It's so great to see you so happy about your home library. Love what you did with it!
Me and my sister spent hours organising our shelf and we were so proud of the final product. A few months later my mother decided to switch things up and yeah we were not happy
This video gave me the urge to color coordinate my books for the first time. It's just so satisfying to see the stacks. I'm not gonna do it tho...but maybe i might do it to one genre
I go in phases on how I organize my books but right now it's definitely the last one! Genre and vibe organization is so much fun when you know what you want to read and can go in and find it.
I love the choice of genres in your arrangement! Extremely satisfying
I loved all these organization methods. But I'd I had to pick one, I'd probably go for the genre categories as well.
He's having so much fun with these shelves 😂 the best decision of his life
Recently-graduated library technician here, and I actually have my books organized in all three ways! Nonfiction is alphabetized by author, but also by genre (e.g. history/anthropology is together, feminism and feminist theory is together, memoirs and bios are together etc); sci-fi and fantasy are grouped together, organized by author; my general fiction/litfic is rainbow; and my favourites are organized by vibes. 😊 ETA: When I was a kid I organized them by height, which is why different editions within a series enraged me 🤣
i’m in my mid-teens and i’ve been reading since i was 2, but i had a bit of a break from that during the covid period.. i’m now starting to get back into reading and i just got a new bookshelf yesterday! i filled it exclusively based off of vibes, except for my stand-alones are mostly together, Rick Riordan has a shrine at the top, and my non-fiction and music related books are all together at the bottom! being able to hear about your shelves and everyone’s in the comments is really inspiring me to expand my collection because reading just makes me so happy!! happy reading 📚
As someone having problems with visual noise, I came to rainbow-ish organizing naturally. But I don't do one big gradient. I sort my book by themes/vibes. And then put them in a color-coordinated order within a theme. This way I can navigate my books AND not feel overwhelmed looking at them. Combination of small gradients makes my bookshelves look way calmer. Maybe someone else also finds it helpful.
I like that better. Something about the one gradient per shelf just screams at me and is too much lol. I think I'd do alphabetical within by genre though 😅
This is exactly what Ive been doing pretty much!!
I'm not ok with being erased! xD Rainbow is super satisfying and I don't know people get so angry. I am quite visual and am more likely to remember the general color of a book than the author.
This was a really satisfying video! I found that sorting by genre was the best for me too. Within each genre I sort alphabetically by author's last name. And I've separated the read and unread books, for easier mood reading 😄
I love the fact how you say what makes the most sense for you! So many people told me I have to do it this or that way - no matter what suits my needs or generally pleases me to see.
I find rainbow bookshelves extremely unaesthetic. It makes the bookshelves less mysterious and attractive, I don't know
thissss
Yeah! Imagine putting two books of the same series apart from each other just because they’re different colours! What the hell
completely disagree. the prettiness is the only good part.

Since you like reading translated Japanese novels and books that tug on the heartstrings, you should pick up _The Travelling Cat Chronicles_ by Hiro Arikawa if you haven't already.
love the genre organisation! that’s how i organise my books too and it does make finding something to read a lot easier 😊
This was satisfying to watch! My shelfs are also mainly organised by genre. They genre > author > series > language >vibes 😊 However, the alphabetical order with the letters in the front also looked nice!
It is so nice to see the joy in his face when he talks about his home library
Organization my books by my obscure categories is my therapy and here's a few suggestions for a pt 2 first letter there's in it also last chapter and pages number price written on the back publish year those some of mine and my 1068 are happy about it and so is my pocket as books are expensive also by ABC of name but when u do that take series that have a *series name* and then a unique title like Percy Jackson and *blah blah*
I absolutely love the organising by genre. When I build my home library in the future I'll be doing the same :)
Rainbow bookshelves are definitely my favourite to look at. They look so nice.
the color puns are everything! I love this video
is this the adult version of playing with lego?
The end organisation of your books looks so cosy. Love it!
As a librarian, organizing by genre and then author/alphabetical makes the most sense to me, however, rainbow just looks so nice :D I have one shelf where I have only organized single, read books in a rainbow and I love it
people hating on rainbow bookshelves are absolutely right. Why are you splitting up a series.😡 But also all of these are so pretty so does it matter 🤷 edit: genre is the right way. (no hate to Jack

UMMMM OF COURSE I’m excited to see his books in a rainbow style. The man knows his audience 🌈
It’s fun to organise by the date you read them. I really like looking at a particular chunk of books and remembering what I read over a summer, or looking at all the books I read when I was 18 and seeing how my tastes have changed since - it’s as if you can see your life as told by your reading habits This means I have all my unread books together, which encourages me to read books I already own because I ‘shop’ my unread shelf before buying a new book (Reference books which are not designed to be read cover-to-cover are all together, not in the date-read order)
organising bookshelves by genre has always been and will always be superior! i don't know how anyone can have it any other way. i loved seeing all the different versions though
I just need to know why you categorised The Poppy War as YA.. it's dark fantasy & too dark to be YA 😅 (plus seeing that in the same row as HS is wild) *coming from a bookstore worker who spends far too much time sorting genres
