Btw to try anagrams you can write the letters little pieces of paper and shuffle them... Yeah... Swiftie abilities

jack, pls explain if this scene has any sort of relevance that would make it make sense to have an e in that word? or is that truly just a mistake?

Tom Nook also doesn't have any E's... coincidence?! I think not!

PLEASE read Sphynx by Anne Garretta-it’s this same concept, except it doesn’t use any gendered pronouns, so you have no idea if the main characters are male or female or in between. It’s especially impressive considering the novel was originally written in French (a gendered language)!!
I love that idea! Definitely have to give this book a try!
There Is no in-between
In this same vein, I definitely recommend The Iliac Crest by Cristina Rivera Garza. Similar concept except not even the main character seems to know. Also, it was originally written in Spanish which is a highly gendered language.
That's actually a more interesting concept to me, since it plays into real life and real issues more rather just being a challenge.
Thats such an interesting concept, that actually adds to the experience
Imagine if Phong Nguyen next book only uses words with the letter e
No, only the letter e, just a whole novel is eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee eeeeeeee e eeeeeeeeee
@@insertcreativehandleyeah, like the p keyboard!
After writing La Disparition (A Void), Georges Perec took all his unused e's and devoted them to a short text, Les Revenentes, in which e is the only vowel employed.

i think it's crazy phong could publish a full book without using that symbol. this is actually so hard - just within this short paragraph i'm kind of struggling! i couldn't focus on a story this way, as i would focus so much on this missing symbol... so fascinating though! thank you so much for showing us this unusual work, what a fun video!
you almost did the full paragraph without using that symbol, only to fail on the final word. this IS frustrating! i don’t know how i did it too but i’m proud edit: i really thought i did it but i used "the". i hate this
vlog, film, and post could be used for the last word i think

yeah, something like that, I usually pronounce it “Fom Ngwin”, but my Vietnamese isn’t perfect. Pretty sure that’s how you pronounce phong, or at least that’s how I pronounce my name

That someone would be able to translate La Disparition in English complying with the E omission is crazy lol
It's actually been translated in English, it's called "a void" but I still unfortunately they couldn't translate the "sans e" "sans eux" that give it's meaning to the book, still impressive though !
Yess exactly E or eux hinting at his parents lost during WW2, a whole new meaning lost in the process of translation
Almost as if it would be impossible for a mere human…
In Spanish it’s the A that’s missing
It is also translated to Turkish by Cemal Yardımcı without using the letter 'e' which is baffling..

YESS I SECOND THIS one of the most unique books I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading😊
Ok, I enjoyed it, but wasn't really blown away.
I was just about to comment the same thing. It's an amazing book. Jack didn't comment about the fact the title sounds "l m n o p". Dont know if he just didn't pick up on it.
I came here to say that! Found the book through a tumblr screenshot on pinterest and read it and it's so good!
It was my favourite book of last year. Even beyond the lipogram part, the social commentary in it was awesome. As someone who grew up in a political system that keeps leaning on extremism, I could literally name a person in my life for each of the characters.
"this book doesn't have the letter e" this guy the whole video: "wow there's no letter e"
Until he reads undeerstood
The letter "E" is important for code breaking. If you do a frequency analysis on a substitution cipher, it is easy to figure out what symbols are used as code for the letter "E." This is simple code breaking, but it's best to start with the fundamentals. These books, that omit the letter "E", always remind codebreakers to expect the unexpected when people really want to keep secrets hidden.

Saw Jack say on his Instagram that he wanted to go back to more vlog-style filming and this video showed me that I’ve really missed it! I first thought this would be about “La Disparition” by Georges Perec as I think it’s one of the most famous books to do this, and the fact that it was translated so many times too is incredible! :)
came here thinking he'd read georges perec!
Yes, same here
About 25 or so years ago I had an English translation of “La Disparition” titled “A Void”, because, rather than no E, it “”avoided” the letter A.
@@michaelsimpson6958 I’ve read it in Russian, it was letter “o”
Came here looking for this comment, once I found he was talking about another book. La Disparition was published in 1969, and apparently he also wrote a book which used words whose only vowel was the letter e too.
I think there might be something about the way the letter e is written as well! It looks like a circle that’s been attempted to be cut off, yet still rejoins in the loop.
obsessed with you taking a break from reading to explain the kate middleton conspiracy. hope her bbl was successful fr xx
The amount of joy in your voice just from flicking the lap on and off was very heartwarming.
Definitely a p2 with other lipogram books would be iconic 🤩 this is such a cool concept
oh my god Jack I'm begging you do a voiceover for a book cause I literally need it for breathing
The same technique was used in the book by Georg's Perec, A Void. It was translated from French and it has no E's in French or in English and was written in 1969 before finally being translated in 1994. It's an amazing feat of writing as well as just a good story.
Wait that’s so cool! Because the character’s name is Ovid. A Void -> Ovid 😮
The other story's main character is Anton Vowl.
I was going to comment this!
He mentioned it in the video

Watching this post brought shock to my day. I did not know this could flourish as a functioning story. I find it fascinating. Thank you for sharing, Jack. I may try this now, or a similar limitation. Truly radical.
My words do not sound natural as I talk this way. That author is out of this world.
It’s amazing how humans can form strings of words without utilizing a particular symbol! I was actually trying to find an annotation that don’t contain this particular symbol! That author also had a fallacy or two in his writing, but it’s still fascinating!
Watching you nerd out on this book is more amusing than I was expecting 👏👏👏
i LOVE meta stories like that! idk why but it just itches my brain the rigth way, i just rewatched a let's play for a video game where the narator turns out to be the villain (if you know, you know) and i'm OBSESSED
I resisted this book because 1) it’s gimmicky, and 2) I’m very suspicious that AI was involved/utilized. However, I was curious so I’m glad you read and reviewed it. Thank you.
now I am going to get the book and see what other words besides "understand" 14:34 and "are" 27:35 have "E" in them and decipher author's message :) not that I needed another book to my never-ending TBR, but this is so much fun
I love love love this video. You’re so funny and the book sounds super interesting ❤
I’m in desperate need of a part 2!
Now you have to write your review without using the letter "e" as well 😂
If I had to take a wild guess, based off the title alone, the book doesn't simply just "th whit dog was slping" Instead, it takes a "Roundabout" way of saying the same sentence, which normally isn't needed. Therefore, that's the title.
Jack I cannot tell you how much of a treat it is to come home from a rough 12 hour shift, put the kettle on, grab a fluffy pillow and watch your new video
YOURE GORGEOUS STOP
No background music or soundtracks warms my body's pump. Thank you for that soft soothing sound of only air moving around and out of your mouth. 😊
In Argentina we use the -e to make the nouns gender neutral (eg instead of "linda/lindo" we can use "linde"). Most of the population are against the use of that letter so I found the book interesting and funny for our current reality in the country
As a Spanish I say you "can't" use that because it's gramatically incorrect. Also, they are trying to be more inclusive by substituring the final letter by an X. So instead of "linda/lindo" they want to say "linde/lindx" which is... not it. With all respect.
@@stormofapril As a teacher who wants to encourage his students to feel free and confident on themselves, and as a person part of the lgbtq+ community who also has friends from the same community, i will do my best to integrate those who feel apart, even if that includes changing a simple letter.
Que la RAE rechace el lenguaje inclusivo es una decisión política. this reminds me of a book i drew/wrote when I was in first grade where everyone was aware of the narrator and just got one. The main character didn't want one so she kinda ran away and broke the narration of the book, and the mom had to go find her daughter with only dialogue I think. I didn't get very far in writing it b/c I was eight and writing stuff only in dialogue is basically impossible. I have no idea where the heck this book went but istg I had silly little pictures of it and I wonder how I thought of it lol
