How did the weight of introducing Jack to Cassie Clare's fanfic days fall on MY shoulders? But really this was so much fun even tho im still very concerned for your emotional state lol :') just saw you started 'how high we go in the dark' and im worried for you hahaha
Wasn't it Draco and Ginny though?
@@golnazzziiii7125 Nope, the original fic was Ron/Ginny :')
@@caricanread by the angel, Cassandra Clare I love you but what the hell😂😶
I laughed so loud when you explained the Ron & Ginny thing haha the look on Jacks face!
she’s so right, miscommunication is not enemies to lovers. enemies to lovers is where they REALLY hate each other’s guts and then start catching feelings. kinda like “i’m gonna kill you” jumps to “i’ll kill whoever hurt you” 😩 best trope
Yea miscommunication should be a trope on its own, it shares the same idea in that both characters don’t like each other but miscommunication is the main reason
Yessssssssjdbjhvbsdjbadh literally Throne of Glass
when the cold blooded infatuation turns into genuine love UGHH 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭🤭
yeah but this one is something people always get wronggg, like, it is not "rivals" nor "i dont like you", it literally has to be them trying to kill the other at least once
yeahhh i've definitely read miscommunication ones that i liked but it's definitely not true enemies to lovers
The fact they only agreed on only one trope was so funny.
I was surprised they would agree on anything... they have very different tastes
I mean the chances of ranking anything exactly the same when there are this many options is pretty low. They had a few tropes in the same general area of the ranking.
And then the perfect reversal of fake dating/don't end up together (which are themselves sort of the inverse of each other)...oof 😂
The fact that you would hand out spoilers like that...
Cari: I like characters to be happy and have fun. Jack: so the character basically takes their erotic pictures and kills them in cold blood....that one's fun.
Fiction tragedy is beautiful!!😄😄
🤣🤣
Omg, they are the grumpy vs sunshine trope 😱😱😱
@@violettbellerose1173 noo bc jack is literally sunshine he's just v analytical LMAOO 😭😭 it's more black cat and golden retriever but HE'S the golden retriever
@@filo4854that kinda makes it fit more tho cause that trope is an “opposites attract” thing so it’d make sense that they’d choose books that are opposite of them. I don’t think Cari fits the grumpy character trope that well but Jack is definitely a golden retriever, like he gets all his negative emotions out through reading heart wrenching books and then only has positive emotions left over after that
“I read a lot of young adult fantasy” “I would highly recommend Boy Parts” I CACKLED
SAME LMAOOOO

the fact that jack has the faking dating trope in the last and cari has that for her second favorite and at the same time cari has the don't end up together trope in the last and jack has that as his second is sooo funny

I feel like enemies-to-lovers only really works in fantasy. It’s often mislabelled and in contemporary it’s more often than not hate-to-love
Yesss!!! Being enemies in fantasy makes sense! In contemporary it always seems silly, over the top and unrealistic. Who has the time and energy to hate their coworker with a passion? Like you two don't vibe with each other? Okay then leave each other alone then, what's so hard about that?
Yes in real life, who would date someone who bullies you.
Exactly
Good point!! Because often they are not true enemies!
In defense of the chosen one - the way it's done in the Percy Jackson series and the various other series by Rick Riordan - I love, because there's always a variety of solid downsides to be chosen, so it feels balanced/appropriately heartbreaking in some cases. Also, "the chosen one" varies and is often "chosen ones" so that helps too.
I was about to write the exact same thing.....
yesss! i feel like the chosen character needs to have a decent amount of depth and not just be this one -dimensional, all perfect, sort of unreal and unrelatable thing.
i can get behind chosen ones!! it just feels so lame when there's one particular character who goes from nothing to being all-powerful (i'm looking at you acotar) but a group of powerful people is a little more interesting to me
I think the reason why Percy being the chosen one is so well written is the same reason why I think Kantiss being the chosen one is so well written: Neither of them wants to be! But they are both written in a way that their morals compel them to complete what they were chosen for. So good! Two of my favorite series of all time.

we'd love to hear your ranking too! here's the list: - friends to lovers - fake dating - chosen one - forced proximity - enemies to lovers - villain's perspective - the main character dies at the end - they don't end up together - forbidden love - grumpy vs sunshine - love triangle - found family
Found Family (Jack go read Six of Crows rn 😭) Enemies to lovers, specifically academic rivals to lovers Villain's perspective Chosen One Forbidden Love The main character dies at the end Fake dating Grumpy vs sunshine love triangle Friends to lovers They don't end up together Force proximity
I just know enemies to lovers is in my top two lol

nooooo you’ve ruined my second chance at youtube fame 😭😭
I think the ranking makes sense in regard of different genres. In fantasybooks Cari's favorite tropes are really nice to read and in contemporary fiction I think Jack's favorite tropes fit really well and give the books real depth.
True, it’d be really fun to see them do a collab where they read each other’s favorite books and then talk about them
The irony of Cari being the one who said she's gonna take forever to rank her tropes but Jack ended up being the one who exceeded the time limit
cari: have you read a fake dating book before? jack: no five mins later cari: have you read the love hypothesis jack: yes make it make sense
I noticed that too but considering it’s one of his least favorite it just probably doesn’t come to mind unless mentioned
Definitely agree more with Cari’s ranking 😂 Jack’s scares me
Cari's reaction to Jack when he enthusiastically pulls out "they don't end up together" 😭😭😭😭 Jack: riiighttt?? Cari: .. Jack: no? Cari: NO.
watching cari judge you for 25 minutes was hilarious LOL
I agree almost a lot with cari's list, while ripping my hair out even though I knew Jack's top trope would include character dying or people not ending up together
Two of my favourite comfort people doing a collab is definitely something i wanted AND needed This is a treat. Thank you very much
I would totally buy a t-shirt that says "My fave color is morally grey"
1. Enemies to lovers (the TENSION) 2. Friends to lovers (the fear, the hope, the way they already know each other so intimately) 3. Chosen one (Percy Jackson made this feel so exciting, especially when it's done with nuance so you can see the downsides of it. Love an anti-hero flair) 4. Found family (the dream) 5. Villain's perspective (Gone Girl had me gasping, Carry On had my jaw dropped) 6. Fake dating (so fun because they have to handle all these situations) 7. Grumpy and sunshine (the comedic POTENTIAL) 8. Forced proximity (only one bed is SO GOOD. I didn't care for it in The Love Hypothesis, but it was amazing in Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue, so you have to do it well. To me, it is the height of yearning and tension if done well) 9. They don't end up together (hurts me. If done well, it can be a nuanced and heartbreakingly realistic look on love and the many reasons it may not work out. If done badly, it cheapens the rest of the story, and the story itself can be boring if you see the ending coming) 10. Love triangle (I tend to like one love interest more than the other, and would appreciate the other character's airtime just going to the one I like) 11. Forbidden love (I don't know, just not that interesting to me. Maybe if it's well-written) 12. Main character dies at the end (Divergent, I'm looking at you. 0 foreshadowing, makes 0 sense for the story? Listen, if it makes sense for the story, then it's fine. Another thing, though--it drives me crazy when a character is prophesied to die, and we all know they HAVE to die at the end, and then they're brought back to life. Even if it hurts, let it hurt!!! Don't cheapen the ending!)
I loved carry on so much!
@@ukeleleguitar2087Carry On is super underrated
I think my problem here is that my taste in these tropes is wildly different depending on both genre and whether it's original or FF. Like in FF give me the dumb trope, give me the fluff, I just want to watch these stupid idiots fall in love in a variety of stupid and predictable ways, but if I read the tropes in a book I would be rolling my eyes.
Lots of modern books nowadays are just published fanfiction of low quality/p
@@zerere_This is why I have almost no interest in published romance fiction. Why am I going to spend cash moneys when I still got 91 AO3 tabs open?
@@izziexxx absolutely
In my opinion, most enemies to lovers are just hater's to lovers. I consider Enemies as two people who would want to physically hurt each other. Not just hate them because they said something stupid years ago. I really love seeing them actually want to hurt each other to later on hurt the world, because their lover got hurt.
When talking about love triangles, I think the term Cari might have been thinking of is "love corner". One character backed into a corner and has to "choose" who to be with.
the way Cari just wants everyone in the books to live happily ever after and Jack is like no, give me all the tears and heart-wrench 😂 i ADORE both of you, thanks for this awesome collab :) ❤
The energy this video has is radiating across continents.
Been a fan of cari for the past 3&1/2 years, and Jack's about 3 years. This video is a gem
What I've learned from this video 1) Jack doesn't like to be happy 2) Me and Cari's rankings are practically the same (except switch forbidden love and found family) :)
A really good enemies to lovers book is six of crows (Nina & Matthias). They have a reason to be enemies and they take time to understand each other's point of view. Also a great example for grumpy sunshine couple. And this whole book is a great example for found family.
Bro literally my favorite fantasy books evrr

I knew Jack would choose "the main character dies at the end" and "villain's perspective" as his favorite tropes! those are my favs too... that's why I always buy books that Jack recommends. 🧡🧡🧡
heyyy do u know in which vids he recommended those books ?? I love those tropes too and it's so hard since "the mc dies at the end" is literally a spoiler in itself 😭😭😭😭😭😭

This is hilarious! Jack is a cinnamon roll who wants to pose as a tough villain, and Cari is just too sweet and wishes everyone happiness❤
Fake dating and they don’t up together are in the exact opposite spots of each other and that just brings me joy for some reason.

Funny thing about this video is that she's dressed up all grumpy but her personality is sunshine and he's dressed up all sunshine but there's some dark grumpy vibe within him ❤🎉 haha Yaya thank you for the amazing video both of you❤
a beautiful character dies at the end one is definitely a little life by hanya yanagihara . like it just makes sense
i deff have more similar taste in books as cari but i would absolutely LOVE a friend like jack to discuss these things with bc it would be so much more interesting to learn about with a different pov!! also jacks list still made a lot of sense to me so in general i think he’d be like one of the best people to get them if i wanted different tropes to read🫶🏼🫶🏼
I pretty much agree with Jacks list. Characters dying at the end is a sure fire way to get me to rate a book higher. A book made me sob and cry? That's 5 stars, baby!
I completely agree, somehow BAWLING your eyes out when reading a book is just sooo satisfying hahahaha. My favorite trope is also when a character dies at the end, or at least when the characters suffer misfortunes. That just hurts me so much it's enjoyable. I guess katharsis is real lol
Ladies and Gentlemen, the collab we have all been waiting for😭 my two favorite book tubers in one video I’m so happy right now
This video had me at the “Ron and Ginny???” in the intro
The video might be grumpy and sunshine trope as she loves sunshine books and jack just wants pain. So fun to watch!
if anyone is curious here is the combined ranking between jack and cari's placings from this video (the numbers in the parathesis are for the spots added up so top spot is #1 and bottom spot is #12, and 1 + 12 added up would be 13 etc.): 1. enemies to lovers (7) 2. found family (10) 3. friends to lovers (10) 4. villains perspective (10) 5. grumpy sunshine (11) 6. forbidden love (12) 7. character dies at the end (12) 8. they don't end up together (12) 9. fake dating (15) 10. chosen one (18) 11. love triangle (18) 12. forced proximity (19)
Cari trying to keep a straight face in the beginning is so funny to me. If I finish a book and I don't feel like an empty shell of a person for the following week, was it even worth reading?
I'm more on the "I like to suffer" side of things, I agree with a lot of Jack's preferences and even the reasons.
I LOVE it when the mc dies. When they know they're going to die, or at least be in danger of it, they always say and do things they never would've under normal circumstances. It can show their devotion to what they love, or explore their perspective of death, etc.
When you mentioned a education enemies to lovers, I laughed because I wasn't the most studious so would be very difficult to be my rival/enemy, but them I thought how fun would be to read about two people sabotaging each other so they aren't the worst in class
If enemies to lovers isnt on top ill scream
Or found family 😭🤞 it's so sweet
Why is this my favorite? I won’t marry him if he wasn’t my enemy first! 😂
This is a collab I never thought would happen, but I love it. I get both sides of the "don't end up together" argument, just because His Dark Materials absolutely wrecked me in high school.

watching this has made me realize how similar my tastes are to yours! i love the death trope, villain's perspective, when the couple doesn't end up together, etc. i just LOVE unsatisfying pieces of media tbh
Jack‘s order is pretty close to mine, I think that’s why I trust his recommendations so much
When the book ending rips my heart out I hate it, I love it and I hate how much I love it - those are the most memorable. While I usually prefer happy endings, I always admire when the author doesn't hold back and delivers a gut punch at the end of their story.

CROSSOVER OF THE CENTURY omgggg
love how u both had almost different picks 😭😭
This would be my list. Even though Jack and Cari were talking about books, I'm also thinking of other media like series, movies, etc. Admittedly, almost any trope I like can be found in Avatar: The Last Airbender. 1. Found Family I really agree with what Jack was saying. This trope will never get old for me, I love reading it always. 2. Grumpy vs Sunshine Even though I do agree that this can make characters somewhat one dimensional, I think that that mostly applies when the author sets out to write this trope. I like this trope when it comes naturally to the characters. I feel like there is just something so moving and beautiful about two characters coming together who are so different but come together and balance each other out. An example of this, though not romantic but platonic, would be Mai and Ty Lee from atla for me. Also, Nico di Angelo and Will Solace!! 3. Friends to lovers This trope has a reputation of being boring, but I really disagree. I think love is built on friendship, and the relationships that start out with being friends are the strongest. Plus, this trope gives you so much angst and comfort. 4. Enemies/ rivals to lovers For me, there are multiple facets to this. Firstly, I almost want to change this trope to "enemies to friends (maybe to lovers)." I think enemies to lovers can be amazing, but only if executed very carefully and written very well. Often, there are power dynamics at play that, for me at least, can make this uncomfortable to read fairly easily. This is why I'm saying that it would be better to first progress to friends, then maybe to lovers (this is also why imo friends to lovers is superior). I am, of course, thinking of Zuko and his progression to being friends with the gaang. Something that is very uncomfortable to me is the "who did this to you" trope (but I know lots of people like this, sorry) 5. Villain's perspective I don't think I've read enough books with this trope to judge this incredibly well, but I agree with Jack that it is super interesting to get insight into a mind so different from your own. I do think that this is very difficult to write properly though, since (imo) you have to find a balance between making the character somewhat understandable (if not relatable) but maintaining the character as villain. Furthermore, Zuko and Azula. 6. Forbidden Love Ngl, I love this trope. It's fun to read. However, I feel like it's a bit overdone and can easily venture into overdramatic. I also sometimes feel like straight people just make up scenarios so they can feel what it would be like to be oppressed in this regard, and that bothers me. 7. Forced proximity The "there's only one bed trope" is definitely overdone, but I still think it's fun (at least in fanfiction; if I bought a whole book and there was this trope I might not like it as much). But I think when you think further than that, this trope can be amazing. It can force two people from different walks of life or with opposing philosophies together and make them confront their differences and find common ground. I do feel like it can be difficult to find a set up for this that doesn't in itself feel forced. 8. Character death I don't like this trope when it is just used to upset the reader. But when it makes sense with the story and conveys a deeper message (even when the deeper message is that there is no deeper message, like with Fred in Harry Potter (fuck JKR)), then it hurts like a bitch, but it really makes you think about life and death in an interesting way. 9. Fake dating I think this one's fun. Again, for me this is more of a fanfiction-type trope and less of a -I'm-going-out-and-buying-a-book trope. Even though it's true that you pretty much know the ending from the start, I don't think that's a problem at all. For me, this trope is the definition of "it's about the journey, not the destination." I love reading about the character's inner journey. Coming to the realization that they like this other person, having to navigate conflicting feelings, battling inner demons. Plus, so much yearning, like Cari said! 10. They don't end up together Ultimately, I like reading happy endings 95% of the time. It makes me happy and relieves stress. But sometimes those books or shows that just make you reflect on life and the different paths that people take, it can be really good. Especially since I love reading about the inner journeys of people (CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT) and this can be a signifier that they choose their own happiness over what would be easiest or please the other person. Imo one of the best examples of this are Alexis and Ted from Schitt's Creek. 11. Chosen one Overdone, unrealistic, but can be good. In avatar, I like that being the "chosen one" contrasts with what Aang wants, which makes this a huge conflict in the series. So even though I do dislike this trope most of the time, when done right, it can result in some of the best pieces of fiction I have ever consumed. 12. Love angle Yes, I am specifying love angle, because for me, a love triangle would be much more interesting. I don't have much to say to this - I think it's overdone, boring, and playing on dynamics between men and women that I'm just not a fan of at all. I would be curious to know if anyone agrees with my list!
