  • From a Finns' perspective, to give scale to the difference of press attention between last year's military practice (Arrow 21) and this year (Arrow 22), last year only eight reporters were present, while this year the number is over eighty. • "Its aim is to deter Russian aggression", this exercise has been carried out for years. There's always been Nato-countries with us in the Arrow-exercise and US Marines have taken part since 2018. This year the exercise is getting a LOT more media attention and some news agencies have claimed that it's executed only because of the ongoing war, which is completely false. Even Reuters claimed that Finland is moving its military equipment to the eastern border, again completely false.

It's quite interesting that back in 2007, when great many countries expected Russia to remain a stable and decent enough international partner, the Finnish defence minister of the time, when visiting the USA, said that the greatest defence concerns for Finland are Russia, Russia, and Russia. Most other countries in the West were looking at nothing but the fight against terrorism back then, although some of the former Eastern Bloc countries still retained their distrust for Russia, for obvious reasons. In Finland that statement by the defence minister raised a minor storm in a teacup.

    • Lets see, there are so many that we have had over the years. But lets start from the most obvious one: it is written in Russian military doctrine that if Russia ends up having a war against any NATO or EU country, they will invade also Finland, no matter are we neutral or not. Given the current situation, the risk of such war is quite high, wouldn't you agree? Then we get to the second point, Russia told that we either join NATO or become Russian satellite, this is written in their demand list they sent to the world and also Putin has told this repeatedly, time after time. Russia is redrawing borders of Europe and spheres of influence. As part of West, we are part of the sanctions against Russia, so we are already enemies from their perspective. There you have 3 good reasons for us to join and what the threats are. Rest you can just google, there are tons of it.

    • It's the other way around. Finland is the one feeling betrayed. Finnish foreign policy toward Russia, and even toward the Soviet Union during the Cold War, was based on the assumption that Moscow could be trusted to a certain, crucial extent. Of course things were different during and after the Cold War, but, nevertheless, that was still the thing. Now it's the common sentiment in Finland that Russia's foreign policy can't be trusted at all. It's quite obvious now that Moscow has had zero trust in Finland, or anyone else, so there's nothing Finland could do to betray Russia in the first place.

Without support from Sweden and Norway there was no way we could send assistance to Finland much as we wanted to. To suggest we promised help is misleading. You may want to register your grievance with the Swedes and Norwegians because they both rejected two different plans to assist Finland the first on the 5th January and the second on the 12th January 1940. The Peace Treaty of 13th March made the final plan pointless. As I recall Sweden was 'neutral' but managed to sell more steel to the Nazis than to us. In fact it supplied 40% of Germany's iron ore. We did actually produce our own steel back then.
