CDC
The CDC has reached out to UK officials and is reviewing their new mortality data associated with variant B.1.1.7
edition.cnn.com/2021/01/23/he...
Only 195 cases so far, but in 22 states
Many more cases are going undetected
California and Florida
Michael Osterholm, Epidemiologist, Coronavirus transition team
Director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy, University of Minnesota
From public and non-public data, convinced that the new variant is deadlier
The data is mounting -- and some of it I can't share -- that clearly supports that B.1.1.7 is causing more severe illness and increased death
Already we know this variant has increased transmission, and so this is more very bad news
South Africa travel ban
South African variant, 501Y.V2
50% more infectious
In at least 20 countries
Not yet found in US
www.reuters.com/article/us-he...
President Biden, impose a ban on most non-U.S. citizens entering the country who have recently been in South Africa
Last week, entry ban, Brazil, United Kingdom, Ireland, 26 countries in Europe that allow travel across open borders
High-transmission variants in Canada
January 25, 2021
What happens if a high-transmission variant becomes established, and is transmitted in the general community in Canada?
www.sfu.ca/magpie/blog/high-tr...
Trajectory we may see, higher-transmission variant
B.1.1.7, 40-80% increase in the reproduction number
Variant with a 40+% increase in transmission rate, likely would not be contained with current measures
What does it mean?
Failure to prevent or contain this now spells disaster in March.
While we don't see much impact for ~6 weeks
when it comes it comes steeply,
doubling time of 1-2 weeks
(Current about 30-40 days recently in provinces like Ontario)
Exponential growth
When you're halfway to the maximum capacity you can tolerate, you only have one doubling time left.
But it might have taken 8 doubling times to get to halfway
So what can we do?
Few detected B.1.1.7 cases already in Canada, (hope that community spread has not yet been established)
Prevent introductions of new variants into Canada
Step up quarantine and isolation of travellers
Improve detection
Be willing to act to curtail the spread of high-transmission variants already in Canada
If and when we find out that COVID-19 vaccines can impact transmission -- and we think it is likely that they will -- we could
Use vaccination as one of the tools in the transmission toolkit, e.g. truckers, Canada/US border
Reduce travel within Canada
Consider screening domestic travellers
Vaccination is not going to impact transmission in the 6-8 week time frame

  • As an at risk older person I would happily wait another month or two if it meant that NHS staff, emergency workers, teachers, supermarket staff etc (who are more likely to spread the virus) could be fully protected ASAP. I can stay at home because I don't have to go to work. It's not my preference but it's tolerable.

  • I'm in one of the "hot zones" in Ontario, Canada, and though my family has been in full lockdown since last March, we've just had a stay-at-home order announced for the province, which is meant to further restrict the lockdown measures for others. In looking at the SFU modelling for March if a new variant takes hold in the community, I'm feeling a kind of depressing deja vu. My stress is ramping up yet again for another bad March, and I'm running out of energy for it. Our vaccine roll-out has been so slow, and our household estimate for first dose is, according to Health Canada, "by September." Vague promise, that. It's hard, this week, to feel any sense of relief about the vaccine when it's so far away. But I do thank you so much for these videos. I watch almost every day, and it's always better to know the facts and accept what you're up against. Knowledge is power. :)

And yet it was a homeopathic preparation that helped with my heartburn during pregnancy. If it were a placebo then the antacids I took which I EXPECTED to work would have worked - not the roll-your-eyes can’t-hurt homeopathic solution that I honestly didn’t expect to do anything. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Same went for a homeopathic prep I had for my baby for colic. Placebos don’t work on colicky babies! I still consult with my GP on the important stuff and I wouldn’t turn down medical interventions and put all my eggs in the homeopathic basket if I had covid, but I can’t deny it worked. • I once sat down with a person who was a firm believer in homeopathy who explained the "scientific" basis for it. By way of example, if you get stung by nettles, you take some nettles, grinding them up in water, then dilute it 1 in 100. . It's then tapped on a hard surface. Apparently this is essential. You then take this 1:100 dilution and repeat this and so on 10 to 20 times until you have an incredibly large dilution. The theory is that every dilution leaves "holes" in the liquid where the substance in the nettles was, of the same shape as the the substance. When you administer this the "holes" in the homeopathic medicine take up the offending substance in you body and remove it. I asked him what they do with the earlier dilutions including the first. He answered that is discarded down the sink. I then got out my calculator and worked out that if it's tipped out down the sink, and then makes its way to the ocean, then if you believed the theory, then all you had to do was drink seawater. If you calculate it you can demonstrate that the oceans must actually have more "holes" than the typical homeopathic preparation. His reply was that the dilution in to waste water had not been tapped to generate the holes. At the end of the conversation, I left believing that there really are parallel universes.

Our main train station and metro station go through this building and people from all over the suburbs congregate in this building every single day it's like 10 cruise ships being boarded and evacuated every single day. There is absolutely no way to control this virus in our city it's impossible. It's easy for someone who has a career and a large bank account to tell everyone else who doesn't have money to stay home when you have no food you're being evicted from your house or your apartment or your business is crumbling after years and years of building it up. Until you walk a mile in Another Man's Shoes he will never understand. @jonock1@jonock13 жыл бұрын
    • Sadly you are deluding yourself. If homeopathy was effective the many trials that have been done, both human and animal would show that. Check out the Linde meta analysis done in the late nineties. The abstract will tell you that there is no clear evidence that homeopathy works and keep in mind that this is the study that homeopathists cite to support their claims because it doesn't say that homeopathy doesn't work. Sorry it's just bunk.

      @corvus1238@corvus12383 жыл бұрын

Nonetheless it still can be somewhat effective above placebo in some trials and can even be harmful if done badly. Many practitioners are not correctly trained either. It should never be used as a sole therapy for serious diseases. I can only go by my experience and so should you. I believe it can be effective as a supportive therapy in the right situation but maybe there are better ways in many cases. • Thank you John Campbell for your efforts to keep us informed with accurate information. Many people do not understand homeopathy. I could not read the article in the Telegraph in the link, but was able to read Edzard Ernst's analysis. This was my comment to his analysis: What the Telegraph is criticizing is not homeopathy, it is allopathy. Homeopathy is prescribing potentized remedies according to the law of similars, the law of provings, and the law of minimum dose (potentized remedies). While I appreciate all perspectives, I think it is important to be sure that our facts are correct when we criticize a very effective treatment for many people who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 or have symptoms suggesting Covid-19 infection. • The new variants latch into the ACE receptor with a stronger bond. They do not loosen and fall off as easily. Therefore when the virus replicates in your body a higher percentage of the newly formed virus invades new cells during each replication period. So the infection grows in your body quicker than with the old version of the virus. You get sicker quicker. Your immune system has less time to mount a defense of antibodies so more people will get ill quicker and more will die quicker before the immune system gets revved up to fight.

I can tell you in Toronto,Ontario we've been in lockdown since Dec 26 (some areas of the city for a month before that). People stay home unless they have to go to work, grocery shopping, exercise. Restaurants/bars, gyms, barbers, shops except essential shops closed. Schools have been remote learning since Dec 20. Also masks were required in schools from 6 years old and up in Toronto (prior to remote learning). This is why the numbers have been going down the last 3 weeks. From what I've read this is the same lockdown that UK did. Of course the devil's in the details & compliance with the measures makes all the difference. The higher the numbers go, the more the compliance.

The smartest thing that was done in Western Australia was to divide the state into local areas and stop travel between them except for supplies. As each area became covid free, they were able to concentrate on any places that still had a problem. It is possible to sort it out, but it was much easier when the numbers were small.

But if we didn't quarantine all people coming into the country we'd be just as bad as the rest of the world. (Same with closing borders between states, if there's an outbreak, which are bigger than most European countries and US states.) All people incoming have to quarantine in hotels for 14 days. The Australian Tennis Open, a Grand Slam event, is on soon and all the players and staff have to be in quarantine hotels, no tennis practice etc. They all knew this. Then the complaints started. Authorities ignored them. Now 4 players have tested positive to the UK strain. Suddenly there are no complaints about the quarantine. In Brisbane, a quarantine hotel cleaner tested positive for the UK strain. The next day all of Brisbane, my city, went into a 3 day full lockdown, work from home, stay at home, fully masked at all times. Everyone said 3 days was ridiculous. But it gave authorities time to trace and test the 78 people that the cleaner had been directly in contact within the 7 day window. Luckily only one other had it, as well as 4 people in the hotel. The city opened up but mask wearing stayed for another 10 days. We've had no transmission in over 2 weeks. Our lives are normal in Australia, but we've got here by sheer diligence.
