If it's a 80% mortality rate for the clawless crabs, isn't that a,lot of wasted crab
Can you eat the body? Honest question - I have no clue.
@@learnedhand8559 Illegal as they said
@@learnedhand8559 it’s illegal. They harvest the claws to help maintain population of the crabs
I used to snorkel for them when I lived there. We never took 2 claws. Seems rough.
@@learnedhand8559 yes
“These boys were swimmin yesterday” 😂 I love this random mafia member joining for dinner
Imagine how low the chances are for a crab with no claws to survive.. That's why us casual people leave that one claw on..
Leaving one claw leads to a higher mortality rate.
Leaving one claw makes the crab think it’s still capable of defense and hunting but it’s severely compromised missing a claw. When you take both the crab goes into scavenger mode and eats food off the bottom, stops hunting and stops picking fights lol. Taking one is only for females.
@HunterBidenscrack That’s not true, but taking both claws doesn’t increase the mortality rate enough to justify only taking one. If you take one, take two because the statistics support it. One claw is about 50/50 mortality. If taking the second claw only raises mortality to 80%, take two. The math works out, especially since females (which are protected) produce a ton of baby crabs, but they only need one male. I’ve been drinking, but I’m pretty sure that’s basically how it works.
ya, last time I checked If I go diving I'm only allowed one claw, but that was a while ago. maybe commercial fisherman have different rules.
@@Sniperboy5551I too have been drinking, but the 80% figure was also the high end. It could be lower

"It's pretty choppy out here." LOL That's a calm day on the Pacific. I agree with Sonny about Maine lobster.
Sonny's right, the idea that a crab with no claws will be able to successfully fight off the crabs with claws intact, and reproduce, is utterly absurd
Yup, 90% of the crabs with no claws will die. Its a stupid fucking policy to only look good on paper. If they changed it to 1 claw, it would DRASTICALLY increase survivability.

@@frankmacleod2565 don't worry brother with that language he made himself look stupid nothing else
The 2 claws!? How are they supposed eat or fight 😂
Crabs with both claws removed tend to favor scavenging behavior, and they use smaller auxiliary claws to pick food off the sea floor
@@roberthershey5476'Tend to favour scavenging behaviour' you mean they haven't got a choice other than to scavenge 😅🤣 that's akin to saying a one eyed man, tends to favour his left eye to see.
They don’t fight. They hide.
They mate and scavenge. 20% survival rate is actually quite high when you think about it. 80% mortality sounds bad, but it’s better than 100% if they let the fishermen take the whole thing.
It's such a waste considering barely any of the declawed crabs will survive for long
Yeah I wonder if they can take one claw, or protect/shelter them until the claws grow back?
@@nettaleanne my auntie is missing both arms she’s doing fine
The mortality stats vary quite a bit depending on which study you look at. The current system works, so why change it? Even a declawed male crab can still reproduce and they don’t harvest from egg-bearing females. 20% survive, so I don’t see how it’s a waste when the ones that die end up back in the food chain anyway. I’m not good at articulating the rationale, but it makes sense. They’ve done plenty of statistical analysis in implementing the policy.
Depends whether or not they reproduce before they die
Consider almost every other seafood we harvest. We take it all. Leave the understanding of sustainability to the people who invest their lives into it.
I agree with Sonny, Soft Shell Crab is the most Amazing Seafood!
so how does that work? you just eat the whole thing?
@@ijustwannaleaveacommentony6511 Yes, one of the best experiences you'll have. You eat the shell and everything inside. Sauteed or fried, alone or in a sandwich, it's the best. If you want to try some anytime, order a Spider Roll in a sushi restaurant. That uses soft shell crab.

Aren’t the claw arms for defense and pulling apart food? How tf are they supposed to eat with no hands for 3 years??
I only have 1 arm and I do okay.
Definitely loved this seafood series. Great content.
Totally agree with Sonny. Maine lobster is far superior! Yes, because it has claws and because the tail IS sweet! You actually have to pay more for higher quality lobsters that yield sweeter, larger tails.
I’m with you on this one, have had seafood from the top of Maine to the tip of Florida, and all points in between, hands down, Maine Lobster 🦞 is the best! 👍

Im so happy to see Jacob on here. Good stuff man making it big.
In my country its actually illegal to break off the claws of the crab, and throw it back out, alive. The crab uses its claws to eat, and defend itself, so when you remove both, they have a high chance of dying.. Slowly. From hunger. Or if they are lucky, you break it off at the wrong spot, so they bleed out quicker. Its a dumb practice that simply doesnt work for the intented purpose.
The growth of this channel since the pandemic days is Massive! Happy for you Sonny! 🎉

Cheap
@@Grom-rl8bm yes it really CHEAPens the viewing experience and breaks immersion with the wonky visuals
@@brugbru7412 I refuse to believe that someone cares this much about something so trivial.
@@ghostsanity2193 Loosing immersion is not a trivial thing. It makes everything look bad, even a good video. No matter how good the video is, once the immersion is broken it won't be better than dog excretion.
Also, AI images have no place among well recorded videos and the high quality of the production this video have. It simply is like putting dog excretion among perfectly ripe apples. Connecting that with immersion. Once you see dog excretion on perfectly good apples, will you eat those apple? It makes the apples look cheaper and disgusting. Once there are dog excretion on apples, they will no longer look as good as they were. A smudge of dog excretion on good apples will reduce their value and they will no longer look as good as they are supposed to be. Will you eat an apple if you see dog excretion on it?

5:00 if they want to preserve these crabs then why it is allowed to take both claws
Yeah, makes no sense
they sometimes lose both naturually in fights, sometime sharks lose fins in fights, thats why its okay to fin sharks and throw them back.
They rarely lose their claws because of fight@@pluto8404
@@pluto8404 Firstly did you even watch the video, crabs with both claws removed have 46-82% mortality rate, crabs sometime lost both claw but it is very rare and those that do also don't have high survival chance either. Secondly shark need fin to swim and need to swim to be able to force water through their gills for o2, without fin they will drown or being eaten by others fish. No it is not okay to fin sharks and throw them back neither is declawing crabs but at least for crabs it is illegal to declaw a female which give them a chance to repopulated, for shark they fucking died

Spiny Lobster or Rock lobster🤣 For marketing purposes was renamed. I have always known it as a crayfish.
By the way Sonny never touches Indian food for bad hygiene
I just think it is wrong to take both claws . A crab needs to eat too . Now how is the crab going to survive to eat when it takes 2 years to grow its claws back just take 1 claw .But anyway you might as well put it out its misery and eat it all .
So I lived in Florida for 22 years I would freedive for lobsters and stone crab claws I've had fresh Maine lobster before and the reigning champion in my book is a colossal Stone Crab claw. I also would work the grass flats at night with a flashlight and a net catching blue crab and shrimp at certain times of the year. Seafood was my primary diet. I live in the midwest now and if you want to know what grouper tastes like go catch a crappie. The only difference is the size of the fillet the flavor is the same and the texture is the same.
I have to agree with Sonny, the soft shell crab tops them all,an the soft shell shrimp is awesome too, I'm born and raised in south Louisiana,so I grew up on those types of foods, nothing like them...
