  • You’ll make less of a mess and get more oil out if you drain it first and then remove the filter. With the filter installed while draining it creates a vacuum reducing the flow. When it’s already drained you’ll have very few drips from the filter and won’t need to spray brake cleaner all over plastic parts. 🙄 Leave the cap in place but loose. Never leave it open where debris could get inside the engine. And use fresh oil on the filter gasket.

  • Pretty good video, straight to the point. I'm about to change the oil in my mother's 2018 Encore and just wanted to be sure there wasn't some odd thing I might come across. Good job pointing out the filter difference, I'm sure that has messed up quite a few people in the middle of the change. Pennzoil Platinum is also what I chose to use in her Encore. I only use it or Ultra Platinum in my Ram 1500. It is great oil. Amsoil may be the only better option but for the price difference Platinum is the way to go.

    • No dip stick.

      @danielfliman3683@danielfliman36832 жыл бұрын
    • If it's like on my 2012 Cruze there's no dipstick but there is an "upper" and "lower" plug on the transmission housing, it's just a little more involved to get at them. The only way to "check" the transmission fluid level is to remove the upper plug, if no fluid drips out, slowly put some more transmission fluid in until it starts to "seep" out and put the plug back in. In all honesty it's probably easier and maybe even cheaper tpo have a GM Mechanic look at it at a service. Most new vehicles hasve "sealed" transmissions and the fluid doesn't have to be changed for 75,000 to 100,000 miles ( look at the owners manual) so of there's no obvious signs of leaking fluid you should be okay.

  • Don’t use brake cleaner on the engine. Use a car degreaser that’s safe on plastic and then rinse it off with water. Also, do not fill to the top of the dipstick because you might accidentally overfill the engine. The true reading of the dipstick is after the engine reaches operating temperature and you shut it down for 5 min. Then you check the reading. Using the dipstick while filling the engine with oil can give you inaccurate reading. Anywhere in between the dipstick marks is good and safe for the engine. The manual should say how much oil you need to add after draining the engine oil (hot).

    @potaxe8048@potaxe80482 жыл бұрын
    • Technically it doesn't matter, but there are some issues that can arise from the oil filter, such as not having the right one, not being able to remove it, or other things, which is why I start with it because lets say you drain the oil and then you can't remove the filter, then you have to fill the engine with new oil and you are waisting the oil because you are using fresh oil with a dirty filter.

    • I mean I'm guessing that you have a 2018-2021 Buick encore, and if you do, it should still be under warranty, bring to the dealer. If not, bring it to a good mechanic that can diagnose it but I don't know your situation or what can cause a three-year-old car to have bad sensors and a cat.

      @danielfliman3683@danielfliman36833 жыл бұрын
    • 2019s at least have received a Notice from GM of an issue that could cause a slight misfire or sensor issues. Not all Encores are affected but it's a lifetime repair so warranty or not it should be covered. By the way, if you change your own oil while the vehicle is under warranty keep your receipts for the oil and filter etc, just in case. Take it to GM and mention the problem there is a fairly simple fix if your car has the issue and should be covered.

Only problem I encountered was the screw to oil under the car was too tight and stripped (I didn’t do it, they probably did that the previous oil change at the agency). Went to Orileys and told them my problem and they recommend some pliers type tool and a new oil screw cap. That was my only hiccup. Sorry I don’t know all the terminology or names of the tools. But for other women out there… totally recommend following the video. Even with the tools… it was 1/3 of what I pay at the dealership.

  • Why did you shake up the oil?

    @ItsFritzDaCat@ItsFritzDaCat2 жыл бұрын
    • Very good questions. When oil sits, some of the additives separate and sit at the bottom of the container, which is why it is important to shake the oil so that all of the additives are able to make it into your engine instead of staying at the bottom of your oil container, especially if you don’t use the the entire bottle.

    • On my specific vehicle, the gasket is integrated into the drain plug, and you would have to replace the entire drain plug. I believe it’s recommended every 25k-30k miles. As you can see from the video, the drain plug gets tightened very loosely, I believe this is to preserve the rubber o-ring on the drain plug.

  • Good video but I have a question and a couple comments. I'll start with the comments. It's not a "big deal" especially for someone who changes oil once or twice a year but old oil is a carcinogen ( can cause cancer) so wearing disposable gloves while handling the oil filter cap, old oil ring etc. as well as disposing of the old oil is a good idea. Also oil expands slightly when it's hot which is from about 5 minutes after you first start the engine in the morning until you stop and park it for the day. I'm assuming that the manufacturer takes that into account when designing the dipsticks and allows some "leeway" but just in case, having the final level of the oil just below the "max" mark ( different on all dipstcks of different vehicles) is a good idea. Of course also make sure the vehicle is level when checking the dipstick. Too high of an oil level is also not good for the engine which shouldn't be an issue if people follow your suggestion to start with slightly less oil than the recommended quarts / litres. I previoyusly had a 2012 Chevy Cruze with pretty much the same procedure except the filter housing was vertical making oil spills very rare when removing the filter. Now the question.....you state that there are two different filters???? for this vehicle? You mention that the "cap" on the filter housing is either brownish or black ( on our former Cruze it was black ) and that the filter housing has "Heinz???? on it and is different in each one. Is this the only way to tell which one requires which filter you will need? Ours is a 2019 Encore so is it a certain year or could be different within the same model year? Good to know either way. Oh and the reason GM went with the paper element oil filter that's not in a "can" is that it's supposed to be recyclable. I don't know how because it's oiled paper but maybe the plastic ends are recycled???? It's also good you mention to pour the oil slowly as I also found that out on the Cruze the hard way.
