Prado Kakadu versus Defender D250 | 4X4 Australia

With the Toyota LandCruiser Prado getting a spec and price rise in the middle of 2021, we couldn’t resist the chance to line up this entry-level Land Rover Defender with a top-of-the-range Prado which sells for $87,807 +ORC, making them around the same money when you ignore the extras on the Landy.

I never had a fault with my d3 and spent 30% of my time off reading it. Didn’t have to add diff breathers to go through water, didn’t have to buy new suspension to get a lift etc. so many Toyota drivers forget what they buy to fix Toyota deficiency it’s laughable.

I e owned both and and can say without a doubt Toyota far exceeds the LR in reliability. And yes, part of the "fun" in owning a Toyota is adding mods. It's not necessary, but an enjoyable thing to do. The rigs are just as capable and absolutely just as reliable without mods.

Not one thing needed attention. Drove the dirt on the Savannah Way to Qld and it did it all with ease. I had it serviced in Alice Springs and Brisbane, all too easy. It was bog standard, no bullbar, nothing. I did get Airbag inserts in the rear coils at TJM in Alice for $650 installed to lift the rear and level the ride, and they had them in stock!. • TFL can vouch for the issues they had on this current model. They have a whole series that outlines the problems they had, one which included an entire wiring loom change. Mind you land rover seemed very accomodating with rectifying the problems, not sure though if it was more so because TFL is a well know youtube channel which they said themselves. I am not biased to any car manufacturer as they all have their own faults, my opinion is based on their experience.

      @sbGOM@sbGOM2 жыл бұрын
    • @@sbGOM To say that there is only one that has considerable amount of issues is misleading, you have no statistical data to support that statement. Yes everyone refers to TFL as is it one of the more detailed and well documented videos portraying the issues with their particular defender. There is also a well presented series of an English gentleman that has been documenting his own personal build that has had some issues with his defender. Once again, I am not a one manufacturer “fan-boy” as Toyota in its current state has had alot of shortcomings recently. Everyone knows about their 2.8L DPF issues, airbox sealing problems and one that is not that well known is the timing chain rattle on the 1GD. There has been an in-house bulletin released to dealerships stating the problem. In any case, each to their own. Parts for japanese manufactured cars are more readily available both OEM and aftermarket which is why I tend to stick with them.

  • Have owned Prado 90, two Series Landy's , two Discovery's (4's) and now LC 76 and Prado 150 VX-L (Kakadu in Aus). Needless to say, the 76 was bought because I could not trust the D4's beyond city limits, the 76 lived up to its reputation and has done its purpose. Needing a more comfortable but still reliable vehicle, I tried new Defender, LC 300 and Prado, but at every turn I was faced with pall over the reliability and support for the Defender, and limited fuel range. And while both come with 19" rims, you can fit 17" rims to the Prado, but not to the Defender. Then on one of the comparison tests done in South Africa on new vehicles the Defender sat down and needed a software upgrade! That had happened to me with one of the Discos as well. I struggled to get supply of either a 300 or a Prado through the chip fiasco, but have since taken delivery of the new Prado and am super impressed. Land Rover are going to have to have a long run of reliability triumphs before they will see me again.

I am able to program and adjust the ride height of the EAS to suit the conditions via a diagnostic tool connected tot he OBD port and at times this has been very useful. • I bought a brand new Prado diesel TX spec last year and love it to bits. Plenty of power and has more than enough tech. I didnt want the higher end model, because it has 19" wheels, mine has 17 with much more higher sidewall tyres...equals better ride on and off road and better off road. Didnt need cooling seats, never gets that hot here to need them. Terrain control on the higher models is more of a useless gimmick. The TX has locking diff and 4L which is all one needs for off roading. I need it for snow driving as much as for off roading. Less things to go wrong. Old school 4x4 never had terrain control and they will go anywhere the new ones will go. No air suspension on mine either good old fashioned spring suspension...less likely to go wrong and if it does cheaper to replace..no chance of air leaks either. Unless you really just want to pose and show off that you have the top of the range car, save yourself heaps of money and buy the basic model, which is still very nice inside, equally as capable and just upgrade as required. With the money I saved I was able to put in the top of the infotainment system which has 14 speakers, full leather seat covers and still had money left to buy another set of black 17 inch rims and winter tyres...and still no where the money I would have spent on the top if the range model that doesnt come with the upgraded infotainment system. Of course it all depends on what one wants and we are all different...But I wanted something highly capable, very reliable that I can upgrade as and when I want with only what I need. One thing I noticed is that prado model seems to have been lowered compared to mine. It is standard, has 13 inches of ground clearance and way more space between the wheels and wheel archers than the one in this video, or is it it just looks like that on the video...I can actually get my head inside the wheel arches in mine.

  • I can’t see an option to buy a diesel 110 defender with 18 inch wheels anymore! I think the D250 diesel is now only available in the new ‘van’ version or the 90. With the 110 you have to go with the D300 engine with 20 inch wheels as standard with an option to use 19 inch wheels. Not many Light truck rated tyres with 19 inch wheels.. What’s the point of building such a good off road vehicle if you can’t put off road tyres on it!

    @tilan6944@tilan69442 жыл бұрын
    • Also a slight irritation for me. I have specced down to 19 inch, and I know that Goodyear specifically designed the off-road Duratrac for the LR 19 inch but not much choice beyond that. Hopefully that will change given the Prado has also gone 19.

  • Well I am not being blind on reliability because new toyotas are not as reliable as they used to be decades ago. Even the lexus lx comes with air suspension since 2000s. I just miss those "old rigs" that once came with with solid axles and a manual transfer case, especially the discovery2.

Plus getting ones that remain legal for your vehicle too. But, I was on 18’s in my d3 and found options and there is so many more today than 11 years ago.

  • Lets face it the Prado is years behind because fanboys keep buying and Toyota knows it, the engine in the Prado is a joke and the defender's engine shows what investment in technology does in the real world. Lets not forget the cylinder dusting in the Toyota because they can't build an airbox that seals or the manual dpf burn because of more woeful design and development. Then you get too the difference on road handling wise, again the Prado is far behind yet still can't match the defender off-road so no excuse, definitely for fanboys only with deep pockets and little sense.

  • Never owned a Toyota yet that gas broke something, from chassis snapping clean through above passenger front wheel to stuffed gearboxes and diffs, bodywork getting fatigue cracks all over the place, over rated over priced. Had much better reliability out of Patrols, I can’t compare LR,s now with Toyota because I haven’t owned a LR since the 80,s, but back during the 70,s and 80,s I drove LR,s all over the most rugged parts of Australia and never once broke down and couldn’t get home.
