2024 GWM Tank 500 Review | Can a Chinese 4x4 wagon really challenge the Toyota Prado?
GWM’s new Tank 500 has landed with loads of gear and sharp pricing, but can the large seven-seat 4x4 wagon really conquer Toyota territory? 👉 Full Review: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
Can a Chinese full-size seven-seat 4x4 wagon truly compete against the might of the Toyota Prado and LandCruiser?
We’re about to find out because the GWM Tank 500 is launching in Australia with razor-sharp pricing, heaps of equipment and real off-road capability.
And just to separate it a bit more from the pack, it’s powered by a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain rather than ubiquitous diesel.
Bruce Newton puts the big new Tank through its paces…

In terms of design and features, Chinese cars have vastly improved over the years. Like a lot of people, I want to see how they hold up as long termers and see if spare parts availability will be an issue.
Yep, this is the burning question. Need a few more years and see how second-hand models fare over the long-run.
ive had this specific car for almost 5 years , works really well
Realistically mate, 74k for the top specs model is not bad even though it’s not PHEV.
Bro its made to counter Land Cruiser/Prado. PHEV wasn’t they were looking for.
This car will be a huge seller at this great price . But the access to 3rd row only on right side is a let down especially as the hev tank500 is made in Thailand where they are rhd and will be sold in sth Africa which is rhd also so hope they fix this mistake
Need big v6 petrol hybrid option too
Great review. I know the Ultra offers a cream & blue dual tone leather interior which looks very luxo. However, the black interior looks really nice in your video.
This tank is making alot of noises In Australia & Pakistan. Where Toyota Land Cruisers & Prado’s are extremely popular. I hope it’s durability will be good as it looks.
Yeah time will tell whether its a solid unit. Seven year warranty is nice but certainly not a silver bullet.
I'm from Pakistan and it's recently been announced and bookings are open now,In a country where there is no competition for prado and land cruiser It's making its first Impressionss
It will sell like hotcakes, Aussies are very quick to jump over each over to save 8 cents, if GWM can prove good "uptime" (not off the road awaiting parts/service/reliability) fleets get on to this model and can run through the warranty period and dump them, then Toyota should be concerned. The full review will be good, running through the tech/drive modes, if it gets down a rough dirt road with a bit of articulation but makes it to the destination, then look out, Kia/Hyundai also started with cheap, value for money and now Aussies are happy to pay top dollar for one. China is a bit smarter by forcing relationships with automotive partners in China to speed the process of knowledge and knowhow for their own brands, like GWM.
And stealing technology!
What about after sales service for tank 500
LC killer
Bring the Tank 400 please. Lots of people I know would get one instead this or the smaller one.
Any issues with. This mechanically
Do the rear wheels lift off the ground when braking like the 400?
Unlikely, it's heavier and longer. Physics would make this harder to achieve.
I can't see the Prado having any drop in sales in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.
It wouldn’t have to be very good to beat Prado.
What’s the resale value of this truck
It's new, too soon to talk about resale value
@@exploreplanet930 but still the resale would be just like other Chinese cars
@@mjb1089 You buy cheap, you sell cheap. You buy expensive, you sell expensive.
Diesel is dead so they have made the right choice. Heaps more power than a Prado and matches the Prado 3000kg towing. They need a bigger fuel tank or dual tanks.
would love to see a towing test showing real worldtowing fuel usage
@@user-lo3eu9it2b Stay tuned!
Did not see no off roading wood like to see how it’s gos
We did take it off-road - but the weather conspired against us and couldn't film it. This is from Bruce, the presenter, in his written review (www.carsales.com.au/editorial/details/gwm-tank-500-2024-review-145237/) ------------------ "Sadly, our off-road drive of the 2024 GWM Tank 500 was curtailed by monsoonal rain that burst just as we were about to engage low-range. It was a case of better safe than bogged! "However, we were in the situation during the day’s driving to witness the Tank 500 negotiating some proper technical tough off-road sections and it did so without getting beached or ripping its guts out. "The capabilities are backed up by off-road info in the screen that includes tyre pressure monitoring, compass, pitch and roll, atmospheric pressures and see-through cameras so you can assess what you are clambering over. "Given what we saw and the specification, the signs are very good for the Tank 500 as a true off-roader capable of competing with the Prado, Everest and Co. "Like the fuel consumption though, a proper verdict is TBA."
is indeed nice and decent but not sure for long term use
too early to say it can challenging, would take another 10-15 years to prove consistent reliability and service, otherwise, Prado will still be Prado, tank 500 maybe something else
Good on Australia for continuing to trade with China in terms of importing their cars despite China placing harsh taxes on Aus wine industry. Looks likes this has paid off as wine tax has lifted.
lifted already
China Australia are two logical strong partners, just go check the account surplus Australia gain trading with China, yes even without the wine. Very challenging ahead though with the very toxic geopolitics U5 is pushing right now. Peace pls, at least say no to war.
Wine tax was in response to Australian sanctions and restrictions on Chinese businesses. Nothing happens in a vacuum.
@@leisurecide9478 thats a pretty massive overreaction to place wine tax on aus industry in response to what Aus did. Crazy!
It’s good that Australia has slowed the pace of being the extension of US’s anti-China foreign policies. I almost thought Australia was the 52nd state of not so united American after Canada being the 51st state.
Personally, going to look at one tomorrow, but 3t towing, probably not gonna buy.....🤷🤷
Did U buy?
The body shell looks like a Toyota Landcruiser. Longevity is always going to be an issue with Chinese made vehicles.
Any ABN holders keep their cars over 5 years.
🇹🇷❤️♥️💙👏👏👏👏👏👍💚
Just like the c0vid jab, ill wait around 10 years to see how things are going.
Underpowered.
I agree the V6 is the sweet spot not that Hybrid 4 cylinder
Nice-looking truck with a little tiny engine and a sad towing capacity not well thought through for Australian buyers
The engine power certainly isnt tiny... combined with the battery its around 250kw output... compared to the Prado at 150kw....
We can't escape buying Chinese products but with cars you can. How about we slap. 200% tariff on them to remind folk how they tried to bankrupt our country. If you can't afford Toyota etc , check out the Korean alternatives like Musso , Kia , etc. Reliable & better qaulity than Chinese . These advertising journalists should be ashamed of themselves.
U should be ashamed of your self for bringing such a hatred into this world. What did they ever do to you personally?
@@jjian5 Tried to bankrupt & destroy my country....good enough.
@@jjian5 Forgot to add mate....my mother's Chinese , hence no "hatred" there. We'd also prefer if the CCP released two Australians imprisoned , without trial & excommunicated from their children , before we compromise trade with our "friendly" neighbors.
You are too pathetic. China's industry was not established overnight, and Chinese people have also purchased decades old German and Japanese cars. Western multinational corporations have seized a lot of profits in China, but even so, Chinese people have not become as hysterical as you
Stop saying "we", it's just you and your own decisions.
