How An Overweight Striker Got A Goalscoring Award Named After Him

2024 ж. 14 Ақп.

Every year in football, there’s an award given for what pundits usually see as the most beautiful goal scored in football. Some of these goals are absolutely iconic, legendary, and jaw dropping.
But the origins of such an honorary award might surprise you, as it came from no other than Ferenc Puskas - a striker who only reached the peak of his career AFTER turning 30 years old - and age where even today’s players with modern recovery and training routines start to drastically decline at. Because as crazy as it might sound, Puskas would score over 806 goals in 792 matches averaging over 1 goal a game throughout his entire career.
Leave a like if you enjoyed, it's the best way to support the channel 🙏 ❤️ Let me know what video you want next!

Not just Puskas but many of your videos cover and give proper credit to players from older generations that many have forgotten about, and as someone who finds the history of football just as fascinating as the modern game, your videos are absolutely perfect.

  • Being overweight definitely doesn’t mean unable to play good football. I myself used to play football being overweight. Could pass, shoot and outrun almost most of my teamates in practice matches. However, I also was the one with the lowest stamina due to my extreme effort to cope not only with tiredness but also the extra weight I was “carrying”. Therefore, it was really hard to make it especially in a high level, without change in eating habits.

He coached a great Panathinaikos team and led them to the European Cup final where they ultimately lost 2-0 from Johan Cruyff’s Ajax. Till this day Panathinaikos is the only Greek team that has participated in a final of a European tournament (They played against Nacional too the same year at the intercontinental cup because Ajax refused to enter fearing the violent game of the Uruguayans … the Greek team paid the prize at the end 💀). He later coached AEK too.

  • Question: Was the hungarian league he played in really a "farmer's league"? I mean the hungarian national team in the 50's was by far the best national team around. Like you said they were dominating other teams and only lost one time in almost 7 years. Wouldn't that suggest that the hungarian league would have had very strong competition during that time as well? Also you said that that Puscas was under the radar for the rest of the world until he left Hungary, which is not true. He is known as the first real big international superstar in football. And he really became this famous sensation while playing for the hungarian national team.

So the hungarian team that is one of the best ever national teams, was made up of hungarian league players exclusively. If anything that proves it was one of the best leagues on the world at the time, instead of being a farmers one.

      @bso1469@bso14693 ай бұрын
    • It wasn't a farmer's league at all, but as in every communist country back then, we had some teams backed up by the government. Honvéd (where Puskás was playing) was the military's branch technically (honvéd literally means national guard which is also the title of the lowest ranking soldier in the military), and the league was dominated by these clubs. Not too different to some of the top EU leagues nowadays though where a couple of teams dominate :D

Book was called "Secrets of dribbling" and of course in book was Puskas. When Puskas was little kid, he played football on the Budapest streets with Josef Boszik and other friends. One day, Puskas came to his mum and said:"Mum, give him something to eat, he played football better than me today". That was Puskas, always full of praise to his opponents. When Dragan Džajić played some friendly game against Real Madrid he destroyed their right back(Sol was his name I think), and Puskas applaude him. Big man was Puskas, to bad he died from Alzheimer, he didnt deserve that. Respect from Serbia. ❤

Barcelona signing a player like him would’ve been very fitting and perhaps could have changed the landscape of football with RM maybe not winning the first five and FCB winning 2 of those last 5 and adding another in 1966. It would’ve been a huge 🖕 to the mainland of Spain had they snagged who may have been the best player in the world at that time and not RM.

Thus some of these European records are overstated and do not hold the same weight as records in European football from the 80s and up. Di Stefano was a sub in River Plates Maquina and destroyed the Spanish league and European competitions when he was past his 30s. Independiente beat real Madrid 6 -1 in the old Chamartín stadium in the 50s.

With that logic I might also make an argument that Messi wouldn't have been as good if he hadn't played for one of the greatest Barcelona teams of all time. Cristiano Ronaldo might mot have been as great if he hadn't played for great teams for most of his career.

  • Great video otherwise but i have to disagree with the idea that a lot of Puskas’ goals were scored in a “farmers league” Back in those days there were essentially 0 transfers between countries, so national teams were almost always just the selection of best players from a given country’s domestic league. Therefore i think hungarys dominance in that period, as well as the amount of top quality players they produced in the era, shows that the hungarian league was in fact one of the very best leagues at the time.

  • What are you including in his goals to jump up to 806 is it second and third division youth national team, Olympic goals because this isn’t counted for players like Messi or Ronaldo, or anyone else for that matter for modern players not preseason friendly Puscas is a fantastic score one of the greatest of all time, but official goals is marked 707 or 740 something at most or 730 something

    • Different players, Di Stefano was good at running the game, the ball went through him like a Messi or KDB role type of player who would play anywhere. Puskas was more of a goalscoring genius

    • R9 was crazy, but Puskas was only 172CM and playing very differet playstyle. R9 was powerplayer with tricks and powerfull shots, but Puskás was every single time optimal. Not fastest, not crazy, just using ultimate shooting style for perfect passing and really special shooting. And: Puskás was more left or right link.

    • To be fair, he gained much more weight in that 2 years he was banned from training, but when Madrid signed him he lost most of it. Was still a bit overweight and not as slender as he was before, but even top athletes and their coaches/support people didn't know much about the connection between diet and performance. The whole professional diet thing started to develop in the '80s and we still don't know everything.
