  • Machine coolant is primarily there to reduce heat caused by material distortion. Material in lathes and mills is removed much like how a bulldozer removes material, it bunches up and folds in on itself at a microscopic level and is eventually peeled off the surface. Traditional friction in machining is not common and is highly undesirable as it can cause inconsistent forces, which causes the tool to bounce over the part. The general term is called chatter and specifically for friction based chatter it's called rubbing, this can lead to a poor quality finish which requires extra processes to remove and reduces the lifespan of the cutting tool, both increase the cost of part production. In case anyone was curious.

    • There's quite a large number of things that can cause chatter. Even having too much load on the tailstock.

      @stevo68@stevo683 ай бұрын
    • @@stevo68 Over loading the tailstock is one I haven't heard of before. In what way do you mean overloading it?

      @Zappyguy111@Zappyguy1113 ай бұрын
    • @Zappyguy111 . I've found that with some smaller pieces if you back the tailstock up a little bit the chattering stops. Obviously still has to be in contact with the part. Just from my experience anyway.

  • I can remember the smell of the machine coolant,gives the tongue a slight oily taste . When the Pruhdoe Pipeline was being built, my mom and step dad had a machine shop that built Aluminum, articulated trucks for tundra and ice operation. We made one with an Ice drill auger so you could drive on thin ice , punch a hole and then flood the ice to thicken it quick. We made a Freezer that went to 40’ F below to freeze saltwater cubes we then practiced out self made cutting bits down in Seattle. Bigfoot was the only Monster truck at time and we took a custom Track truck to the Mudbog race at Kingdome. Had the name “Santanimal “ as our company got sued over using the name “ Cat Track.” Crystal Mountain ski resort had some , they bolt on stock axles. The heat to assemble process was cool to do , we used dry ice on inside piece when assembling aluminum rims . Even after welding the seam , they had to peen and spot weld weeping leaks. Spied a Starbucks logo girl during the Cnc portion.

  • Also how on earth is the rock drill bit going to work, when inside it is full of bearings making it spin around, so those knobs will not touch any rock surface as they should to the point of only lightly touching it etc. Now if they used hardent hi grade steel for the knob's and hi grade end bits then it would be like a tungsten carbide machining bit used on the lathes and milling machines tool bits?👍👍🦘🦘👌👌

    • I'm not sure which bit you're referring to specifically, but I'm assuming the first one. Each of those cutters is part of a much, much larger assembly. Look up Roller Cutter Drill and you should find some images of full rigs

  • @ 6:36 you wrote “ heat the body for expansion “ Is it not tempering ? Tempering involves heating the steel to a lower temperature (below the critical point) and then cooling it rapidly in air or water. This reduces the brittleness and increases the toughness of the steel.
