Hi! Today, the restoration of the Shamshir saber. My friend gave me the scimitar and asked me to restore it. The condition is poor, the tip of the saber is broken (I am forbidden to use welding to lengthen the blade by a friend) The guard of the saber is also broken and rusty. Well, I'll fix it and restore it.
The blade of the saber.
My first duty was to use a rust remover. After the first cleaning, I used a soft iron brush. I sanded the surface of the saber with sandpaper and a polishing mixture.
The shape of the blade is fiery (this is the first time I've seen it) and I decided to give the effect of fire by using copper plating.
Next, he added a couple of patterns to the surface of the blade using electricity and salt water.
I made the handle of the saber out of beech and brass rivets. I also used epoxy resin. After drying and processing, I covered the surface of the handle with eco stain and wiped it with linseed oil.

First, I cleaned the guard with a rust remover and also cleaned it with an iron brush. Next, I adjusted the joints and re-welded everything. After that, I sanded and added patterns to the surface, which I filled with 80% brass and also added copper plating elements, and then cleaned to create the old effect.

I used wood to create the scabbard of the saber. The surface was covered with red velvet, decorated with paint and transparent varnish on the back. I made the accessories of the scabbard out of brass and polished them.

  • interesting camera angles and close ups, 👍. I wonder if that copper plating won't turn green in time? But great colour decoration with oxides. The sabre looks like it was a curio from many decades ago and was left on a damp floor.

  • Отличная работа!👍 Почему то предполагал, что при клепке именно в этом месте накладка рукояти может лопнуть. Продольные волокна дерева в этом месте самые короткие. Наверное для таких накладок лучше подойдет древесина со скрученными слоями. К примеру капы и сувели. берез, карагача и тд.

  • может оставлять меньше длины медной трубки, по моему опыту до 3 сантиметров длины трубки нужно оставлять не более 1 миллиметра, то есть 0,5 мм на сторону, а также другой вариант, который точно не приведёт к трещине в дереве, такой же обжиг, как ты делаешь, когда из медной пластины создаёшь кольцо для ножен. прости что советую, но ведь ни разу не видел такого совета. 68 лайк мой. Очень нравятся твои работы.

  • Nice to see a red scabbard! What was that when you applied somehing to the edges? I do not mind shinny blades, but not so polished that they blind me. I knew the scabbard would have to be roomy to fit the curb and edges.

  • Coloring the blade to complement the flame edge was very cool. I recognized the blue copper sulfate you used at the end to deposit copper on the steel but not the other red, green, brown and off-white materials you used earlier to prepare the blade. Can you tell us what they were, or is it your secret? I won’t hold it against you if you don’t want to tell us. Anyway, another exciting resurrection of a poor, sad “piece of junk” that has a new life being admired in a museum. Thanks, and beep beep!

    • Hi! Thank you so much for your interest and feedback. I like to read your comments. No secrets, it's simple. I'm here to share my experience. So: for polishing steel, I use dry paste (for steel and for non-ferrous metals), (green for ferrous metals and red for metal) to make them softer, I used kerosene. To gradate the sanding, I used purified sand and hot water to make one mix. I am currently working on a project and have found a more interesting way. (but not fully economic) but so effective. I'll share it with you soon. Ask questions - I will always be happy to answer. If I answer later, I'm sorry, I won't have time physically. beeP)!

  • Another great video - thanks! I am still wondering what is this yellow liquid which you use to remove rust. You always tell us that you clean/neutralize afterwards with Water+Soda - but what do you use before?
