  • Winky Wright was the Eddie Perkins of his generation. Fought everyone, wasn't scared to fight them in their backyards, held his own with everyone, and ends up getting forgotten. Real boxing fans will know how good he was though.

  • X showed his pedigree in this fight. Needed all those tricks to win, not an easy style but handled his biz in a very effective manner. Won from the outside using mobility and pivoting around using timed attacks. Strength negated winks inside game, grabbing is part of the sport. Tyson Fury, Hopkins, Ali, Andre ward all employ grappling tactics to smother attacks. It’s bending the rules not breaking them.Gruelling fight, both guys exceptional fighting when tired. That’s the name of game. Best sport ever despite all the bs

Winky threw a lot of wild punches....outta frustration. Regardless if he was holding too much or not, Hopkins landed the harder, cleaner shots. Punch & grab is a true boxing technique, clearly Winky didn't prepare for at least one of B-Hop's strengths...

  • I actually don't think they have a ton in common to be honest. They are both defensive, but that is about where it stops. Hopkins employs lateral movement, head movement inside, and counterpunching to limit opposition punch output to one punch at a time. On the other hand, Wright stands stationary, puts his guard up, blocks as many punches as his opponent can throw, and then counters with his jab. Hopkins showed superiority here, but I don't think either is a poor man's version of the other.

  • One thing I didn’t like about this fight was Hopkin’s excessive holding. He usually likes to tie up his opponent and fight the insight game, (which I appreciate), but I only saw that in the last 3 rounds. And maybe even the 1st round, but for the most part there was a lot of holding. I thoughts the fight was a lot closer as well, but Wright did seem to lose quite a bit of steam the last five rounds. Which only led to more holding from Hopkins. Two great fighters, but not their best work.

Damn 2007 Hopkins with this movement, inside fighting, and counter punching ability would give 2010's and 2020's (today's) MIddleWeight/SuperMiddleWeights nightmares. ;/ Only 2021-2022 Bivol and Canelo would make it a fight against this version of BHOP. • This wasn’t a bad fight despite how ugly it was. Probably one of the most hideous fights I’ve ever seen. But both guys worked very hard this whole fight and relied mostly on power punches on the inside, which is the exact opposite of what I expected. Here’s how I scored it: Round 1: 10/9 Hopkins Round 2: 9/10 Wright (19-19) Round 3: 9/10 Wright (28-29) Round 4: 9/10 Wright (37-39) Round 5: 10/9 Hopkins (47-48) Round 6: 10/9 Hopkins (57-57) Round 7: 10/9 Hopkins (67-66) Round 8: 10/9 Hopkins (77-75) Round 9: 10/9 Hopkins (87-84) Round 10: 10/9 Hopkins (97-93) Round 11: 10/9 Hopkins (107-102) Round 12: 10/9 Hopkins (117-111) I ended up with a 117-111 scorecard for Bernard Hopkins, and had him completely sweeping the last 8 rounds of the fight. Most of the rounds were tough to score, but I saw Hopkins using his size advantage on the inside and landing the harder punches, and Wright just looked sloppy to me in rounds 10-12.

Lennox Lewis tells a story how he once went down to where Holyfield was training and he had a tire hanging by ropes that he would practice headbutting on. Holyfield and Hopkins were so sneaky with it. As soon as an opponent would complain to the ref Evander would hit you with like a 3 piece combo so that you had to move past it quickly. Hopkins was such a horribly dirty fighter in every way. In his rematch with Roy he desperately tried to get Roy DQ'd by hitting Roy behind the head, and when Roy would retaliate, Hopkins would drop to the ground like he'd just been shot. In his first fight against Chad Dawson he realized he couldh't win so he faked an injury to have the fight stopped, later called a NC

  • I wonder if Winky developed his style in part with the thought of defeating his Florida rival Roy Jones. Its a style designed to pressure and rush his opponent by way of coming in with a shelled up high gaurd, to take away the distance, and unload volume from there. I've been studying Roy Jones lately, and it struck me that Winky employs an almost opposite style to Roy. Both fighters were great in their own way.

Incredible amount of skill to nullify winky s ultra boring turtle defense style.Bernard is super slick in there.Fans sometimes don't appreciate what he's really employing in the Ring. Its not necessarily how many punches your throw, but damage done.

  • The headbutt cut on Winky Wright is more an upper eyelid cut . It is lower, closer to the eye and more medically dangerous than an eyebrow cut . that cut gets any deeper it could possibly damage Wright's vision permanently in that eye . Its similar to the cut Vitali Klitschko suffered from a punch by Lennox Lewis . It was deeper and you could actually see the white of upper part of Klitschko's eyeball . The referee saw the danger and correctly stopped the fight
