Inside a Super Rich Gated Community (Extreme Wealth Documentary) | Real Stories

It’s the new housing trend. Entire private neighbourhoods - sometimes spanning several hundreds of hectares and complete with luxury facilities, private schools and shops - all under extreme security and banned to non-residents.
In gated communities like MacDonald Highlands, residents can dine at private restaurants, play a game of tennis or enjoy a round of golf. They have their own personal trainers permanently on-call. But life here isn’t cheap. Just the obligatory gym and club memberships come to over $700 a month. And, in addition to the high maintenance charges, residents are expected to adopt a certain lifestyle and comply with strict regulations. At MacDonald Highlands, among the many rules, it is forbidden for children under 14 to walk around alone. Also banned is the use of skateboards and scooters and making noise after 10pm. Offences like not taking down Christmas lights within the required period or having a less-than-immaculate garden are all punished with a fine.
It used to be that these gated communities were home only to super-rich Americans but now they’re appearing across the globe and are shaping new residences of the future. Over in Marseille, security-conscious real estate owners have petitioned the City Council to erect barriers and close off entire neighborhoods. The first gated community has opened in Sofia, Bulgaria.
But as more and more people take refuge behind walls, will the remaining public space be turned into a giant ghetto?

  • I lived in a high end community like this for about 10 years. The rules/HOA, lack of friendly neighbors (because they were too busy working, traveling), got old. We left and live on 20 acres in the country on a home we built ourselves. I can even walk outside nude and no one will see me. That’s what you call freedom.

No playing very loud music after 10 pm, which non HOA home shouldn't do or may be put the headphones on, not having fence in front, which I am okay with because with front yard fence it feels like I am entering penitentiary and not home. All of the homes doing same thing in the area makes it looking pleasing to eyes. Personally in our surrounding area NON HOA homes are pretty well maintained too but only thing I feel it takes is just one bad neighbor.

    • Safety in a gated community is very much in your head. I worked as a dispatcher at a sheriffs office and for 911 and I’ll tell you from personal experience that you are no more safe than anyone else. If someone wants what you have, they will get it and if they want to hurt you, they will. Criminals always find a way and they don’t care about the rules, or the old fart on gate duty. The domestic violence, boyfriends & girlfriends of divorcées and teenagers with too much money and not enough attention make gated communities their own little reality show. If you like it, then that’s awesome, but you are not more safe. I can tell you though that it makes it a LOT harder for the, police, fire department and ambulance to get to you when the codes aren’t updated with our agencies.

    • @@jdmccoy1999 Criminals like low hanging fruit too. It is going to keep out anyone but the locals. There is an order of magnitude more security with a gate guard than a codebox. Especially when you can buzz 10 houses and SOMEONE will let you in. That trick won't get you past the gate. Gate guard can also see if someone is REALLY carrying a pizza or food order. And can open the gate for a police car. I bet their security team is at least 40-50 people. If not significantly more. But even a codebox with a lot of cameras does a decent job of filtering. That is what my condo has. That one in NV looks to be mostly older folks though, a more upscale version of the Villages.

It's completely different to the GC in LV. The fact that ambulances etc have to make endless detours to reach their destination is an affrontation! You can't just close off existing neighborhoods at random which every way and w/o consent of ALL residents.
