This document delves into the global diamond industry, highlighting its struggle with globalization. From the diamond dealers of Antwerp to the mines of Botswana, it traces the journey of diamonds as a prime material in jewelry making, affected by global shifts. The story focuses on the Taché family, diamond traders for three generations, who moved from Lebanon to Antwerp in the late 1950s. The narrative explores the evolution of the diamond cutting industry, moving from skilled artisans to high-tech machinery, emphasizing Antwerp's historical role as a diamond trading hub. It also examines the shift towards countries with cheaper labor, like India, where a significant portion of diamond cutting has moved. The document captures the essence of the diamond trade's impact on global economies, from the rich mines of Africa to the bustling markets of India, illustrating how diamonds remain a vital part of luxury trade and national economies worldwide
Director: François Rabaté
Keep in mind that diamonds in jewelry making is a relatively recent fashion. Before the early 19th century, jewelers relied on colored gemstones and pearls for their creations. Diamonds really got their boost in the 30s when DeBeers started the 'two months salary' for an engagement ring campaign.
Now two months salary buys 2 weeks of groceries 😂😂

This channel unironically has the best documentaries, especially since they started pumping more out over the last year.
to bad they're ran by marxist pushing that propaganda.
Do they repost documentaries? Seems like a massive output
@@KeefeL yes. it is a marxist agenda. subtle but it isthere.
I remember seeing a documentary years ago where a diamond dealer in Russia showed a huge warehouse with shelves full of cases of cut diamonds. There was a massive amount of them, and he said they only let out so many for sale each year, do they don't flood the market and their value stays high.
indeed, prices goes high every year, and diamond mining industry add millions of carats every year, is an artificial price

Diamonds are a sales gimmick, “diamonds are forever” emeralds and rubies are much more beautiful to me…..
And people ate it up. Human beings are so easy to deceive.
In fact emeralds and rubies are more expensive

one of the biggest scams in history, diamonds being rare.
I so agree , and the scam , the bigger the diamond the bigger the love 😢 My big God doesn't need diamonds to show his Love ❤
Agreed.
Agreed
diamonds are not rare at all. Exceptionally clear, large or colored ones however ARE VERY rare and expensive due to that and the high loss due to highly skilled cutters and polishers.
Sweet! I'll give you $1000 for every 5 gallon bucket of perfect octahedron diamonds over 5 carats each. Since they're so common, that shouldn't be an issue.
Anyone notice this is 15 years old video
Yes, and a lot has changed. And somethings have not.
Thanks Best Documentary for another of your subjects Diamonds nicely put up by your team . Very nice.
I watched a video about one of the biggest diamonds ever found in Kimberley. It was huge, with a pinkish hue, and way too big for any type of jewelry. Because it was record-setting, the company that owned it also didn't want to split it up. Last I saw of it was it getting wheeled into a hi=security vault for storage. Point is, how can you say this diamond is "worth" xx millions of dollars? All it does is sit in locked storage. Nobody will lend against it, few people would ever consider buying it. It serves no purpose. By extension, the same can be said of any diamond other than the ones that are being put to industrial uses. Other than that, diamonds have no value, or perhaps only to people who are attracted by shiny, glittering objects.
It's called the Cullinan and was over 3,000 carats raw. It was D (perfect white in color), Flawless and the Cleaver spent years studying it before cleaving it. when the chisel broke he had a nervous breakdown. A year later his 2nd attempt was successful. The largest of many stones is in the Royal Scepter in the Crown Jewels of England. ❤ Search Cullinan 1, then 2 if interested.
The dollar has also lost its value since 1971 when Nixon took it if the Gold Standard. It’s faith what is intrinsically instilled within the Volk so do diamonds, the marketing that de beers and Tiffany have done is already instilled in everyone’s mind. If you think of wealth in terms of stones you think of a diamond even though for example they can produce moissanites from thin air which cost a fraction of a diamond.
Diamonds have value in technology from dentistry to heavy industry

I just wonder why this well researched documentary never mentioned about LAB GROWN DIAMONDS which is the biggest concern now of the diamond business worldwide. Thanks.
this video is old.. probably sometime between 2000-2010
Def early 2000s cause in the India segment, they looked like they were in the 90s
Best documentary
Fascinating, thank you 🙏 very informative.😊
Human beings are so easy to deceive. Most people now believe that a diamond represents rareness and love and they will spend tons of money to buy it. "Diamonds are forever"
Now that us humans can make absolutely perfect diamonds of any size in a laboratory this industry will die out. Already in Australia the popularity of lab grown is taking over those being mined. We prefer the ones with no human suffering attached.
Or the ones that the Western World has more control over and can make more money off or help them monopolize the market in name of you do not people to suffer 🤣🤣🤣🤔
Not true, the lab grown market will die out, since there is no rarity to lab grown. "Human suffering" 😂 you clearly have no clue my guy
Human suffering in terms of those that illegally purchase blood diamonds is not acceptable. However, for the majority of those that work within the (professional) mining aspect of diamonds, it is employment, not suffering. The want of natural diamonds will never die out; however, the mindset of natural is better than lab, will take a generation or so to change. If I was wealthy and could afford a large stone, yes, I would prefer a natural. But I am not, and love my 1 carat Moissanite with its extra sparkle and far better affordability!
Lab grown are garbage compared to natural even though naked eye won't tell the difference. Those little replicas are being reprinted again.
@@Ivan_Magana See that is what I have a problem with. To the naked eye they are the same. It’s simply human greed to have something unique that is destroying our planet and peoples lives. There is no need for natural diamonds any more.
Very objective and well presented.. diamonds are basically used for wealth and nothing else
diamonds prove there's a sucker born every minute and a smart business man ready to con them .

Great documentary ❤
Terrificly informative. Clearly no diamond shortages but color rarity. Plz do documentary on rubies, the real shortage and rarity
Rubies, Sapphires, and Emeralds are rarer than Diamonds. One heck of a monopoly, though.
There is a good documentary called Nothing Lasts Forever about diamond companies and the origin of marketing for diamond in wedding and proposal rings. Its insane!

It takes one hell of a marketing department to sell worthless rocks.
Amazing machines working on diamond polishing
The real rarity of gems lies in different color/types of gemstones. You can literally walk into any jewelry store and they will have diamonds but they wouldn't always have different color/types of gemstones.

It is possible to admire men who work the land to produce food. It is also possible to respect men who work in factories to produce necessary and useful things. The men who maintain the electrical network, remove the city's trash and repair damage to the water distribution pipes are worthy of applause and high consideration. Lawyers, engineers, doctors, dentists, mechanics, bricklayers, etc... carry out important tasks that people in general cannot do alone. But the men who exploit popular credulity, the pastors and sorcerers, are weeds that produce nothing good and make a profit by spreading poison. And those who trade in diamonds and other shiny things are despicable. Diamonds feed people's vanity and cupidity, deforming the character of those who buy them to corrupt those who will be gifted. The diamond trade also drives many people crazy who cannot afford such valuable objects. Wherever a new diamond mine emerges, civil and foreign wars fomented and financed by precious stone dealers soon occur.

will dropping it really dent its value? are they the hardest ....?
Diamonds is hard but its prone to chipping.. if u drop ,it can hit an angle and a part of the diamond can chip off easily n lose its value
A very interesting documentary, however, since I am poor I’ll never own a decent size diamond. Considering how many billions of diamonds there are out there they should be cheap as chips. If you buy a good one, you’ll still only get about half what you paid if you want to sell it.

millions of diamond carats are mined every year, but prices goes higher every year, why that? it should decrease no?, is not decreasing, even now with the lab growing diamonds that crashed the market, prices goes higher, is a damn lump of carbon
It persived value of a product that makes them expensive plus not all diamonds are for jewelry some are mined for industrial purposes
