Mumbai: Rich vs Poor in the Indian Megapolis | India Wealth & Poverty Documentary

It’s one of the most populous cities on the planet with 22 million inhabitants, predicted to increase to 30 million by 2035. Nicknamed ‘the infernal Metropolis’, Mumbai is a city in perpetual development. But with millions of people living in slums located on valuable real estate, how can city planners balance the competing needs of the population?
In Dharavi, the largest slum in Asia, over one million people are packed into the 2 km. slum. But although its residents are poor, there’s a real dynamism. Mahesh, 27, was born and lives in this slum and would never leave it. He runs a recycling plant and employs around 20 people. Dharavi’s underground economy is thought to generate 800 million euros per year. But it also lies on prime real estate in the very centre of Mumbai so its future is in doubt.
Every day, new towers of glass or concrete emerge from the earth. With the support of the municipality, real estate tycoon, Babulal Varma, razes slums to build luxury apartments for the upper classes. As the city constantly expands, it pushes into the surrounding forests and natural spaces, such as Sanjay Gandhi Park. The fifty leopards who live there regularly make forays into the new housing estates. They attack stray dogs, but also the inhabitants. Each year, several people are killed by feline attacks. At night, forest department rangers patrol to prevent leopard incursions.

  • As an Indian and a Mumbaikar who has lived in Mumbai for 24 years, I have to admit that Mumbai is truly a shithole. No one cares about how terribly bad the roads are, how terrible the infrastructure is, how corrupt the government is. No one cares about these things. In this country, people will be outraged over a movie that hurts their religious or cultural sentiments while still taking a shit on the street. I’m really grateful to have had the chance to gotten out of that shithole. There’s nothing wrong with that patch of land that they call India. Just the mentality of the people that holds us all back from prosperity.

Likely by exploiting the labor force, paying them barely enough to afford three meals a day, while they work day and night without holidays, benefits etc. While the father lamented about his own challenging beginnings, the son and father duo now run a factory where workers toil without adequate protection. The chemicals utilized in the leather industry pose severe health risks, with a significant (90%) likelihood of cancer upon exposure. Yet, the duo prioritize personal gains, aspiring to purchase a fucking penthouse, rather than investing in the welfare of their employees. Greed, indeed, is one hell of a drug.

    • @matthewjames1114 Indians do not have the same mindset of the West, where rich is bad. The same people who made their money were in the same position as everyone in India under the British. The Tata Group started in a small office in Bombay and now the coverage is around the world. This gives inspiration in thinking we as a nation can also be like that. We do not get jealous of wealth because in our DNA we were the wealthist nation on earth for thousands of years, so as a nation we are working hard to build the stature we had. It takes time when your economy was decimated, and our culture was taught it was leseer. We are breaking those ideaso, and are building the infrastructure, the welfare and all social aspects of India. The hurdles that we face, that it is democratic and diverse. Dharavi, as an example, we cannot just go in and knock down the properties to rebuild million pound apartments. We have to to think of the people and what they want religously, cultuarly, without distabalising the commumities that exist. The people of Dharavi love their communinity to just bulldoze that and rebuild and even offer better housing, would tarnish their social construct, economically and socailly. We are not China. So to your respnse about showing off wealth, it is not, it is inspirational, and that is what drives India. Do not be fooled by street sellers, they are some of rich, and the story of one food street seller who lives in one of the most expensive homes in Mumbai, yet he still runs his business from 04:00am till 01:00am in the the next morning. Wealth may be seen as power in the West in India is it what you are and the way you live your life. Humility does not mean poverty. The people of Dharavi may look poor to you, but have the better life than many of us. Life is not always about money, but experiences and just living life.

Religious and ethnic prejudices, caste system, conflicts between Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, separatist armed organizations, extreme poverty, lack of health facilities, garbage and pollution, military wings of political parties, women Increasing incidents of rape, corruption in government affairs, many other factors are preventing India from progressing. • These people in Mumbai don't even have a dollar to their name. Yet, they bravely go about their lives with a smile on their faces and deal with adversity with humor and fortitude. Compare that with the US, where folks in inner cities are shooting each other, living in fatherless families and generally leading a destructive life. Same goes for some of the MAGA folks who seem to want to do a coup in the US. Is it cultural or is there something in the DNA of India which prevents India with all its issues from devolving into the hell holes that inner cities are in the USofA? Most of these folks are coming from villages to work for their families back home so they can send money back to villages in poor regions of India (Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, etc). Not meaning to be disrespectful of the challenges that people in the US have had to face over the last 2 centuries, but the contrast is still very striking. These are guys are not selling drugs, joining gangs, indulging in drive by shootings and looting stores, in spite of the fact that their lot is considerably worse that many others.
