How does it perform in batter vs pd charging compared to scar 16?
Am assuming the reason they removed features was that it's easier for production to maintain better quality control on the remaining features.
This seems more like a premium version of the legion 5 pro series than an actual legion 7.
Legion 5 pro ultra!
can't agree more
That's pretty much what the Legion 7 is.
@@joelconolly5574 I mean not really, the legion 7 has more features compared to the legion 5 and 5 pro, but this pro 7 one doesn't, it's a downgrade feature wise conpared to last years legion 7.
Lenovo legion pro max
If I had no idea about these two models and I looked at them side by side for the first time with no idea about the internal specs, I would assume the 2022 model is the newer and better version. I hope these I/O changes and bigger exhausts were worth it for whatever performance Lenovo are aiming for.
I think some of the features come down to cost measures. This year and last year we saw price increases, and it was ridiculous. If I were still into gaming laptops I would be considering the Eluktronics updated models with the updated liquid cooler. Though, they only offer them in mechanical keyboards currently, and those suckers were loud, I returned the 3080ti model I had from them a few months ago because it was way too loud for the keyboard.
Disappointing to see this taking into account ramped-up prices for the current-gen technology. Hopefully, lower-tier GPUs will be more affordable as I am quite reluctant to pay 2k$ and more for unreliable laptops that roast inside due to heavy loads after a few years.
Legions have decent thermals and wont fry itself, but i agree with ya spending more than 2k on a laptop atleast on a first world country, i mean anyways ya guys get good 3070ti;s for mid 1000's. We indians need to pay more than 1400 to get a good xx60 series gpu laptops oof, xx70 above 2k and xx80/ti above 3k/4k usd
@@pranavdupati9164 dont vote on marxists (taxes)
4070 model will supposedly start at $2000. But it does give up the full vapor chamber cooling and give you heat pipes on the GPU instead.
@@heroofharo yeh but we all know lenovo gives sales, so it may turn out to be good value, and 4070 will easily cool properly since it's 140w, i can literally do 58c average gpu with 140w 3060 on my legion 5 2021(only comes with 130w) and 54c avg gpu on timespy with 130w Also if ur wondering how cool i got the temps to be were i sit in AC room of 18c, use my custom fan curve which is a bit more agressive For gaming, i either leave the gpu stock which brings temps to 60 to 70s on 140 and high 50s to 65c for 130w Or if i undervolt, using msi afterburner, i get 50s to 60s for both 130w 140w This is on complete stock paste and all(all hail to Honeywell ptm 7958) on heatpipes, 140w for vc kinda overkill IMO
@@pranavdupati9164 Legion thermals are not as plug and play as you make it sound like. I have the 2021 model and the CPU routinely hit 99°C in performance mode while gaming and started thermal throttling, I had to manually disable Intel boost to get the thermals in check
Honestly I think this is because of the price of the new rtx 40 series. If you compare this new legion is less expensive than the competition. But it really is a bummer to see all those nice features gone :/
Wow thanks Jarrod. I was watching this video on my Legion 5 Pro '21 and i tried the first time for myself pressing FN + R to switch the refreshrate. I did not know that this is possible. Thanks for the hint. :)
Seriously they've basically shoot themselves on the foot with pro 7. It's basically a stronger legion 5 pro. I was expecting them to keep the 2022 design and even use it on more affordable models. And also mylar trackpad is another issue. It has a tendency to turn yellow in white color option. Last years legion 7i was a perfect machine for me; it was basically offering an asus rog scar 17 performance on a zephyrus g15 chassis which is a HUGE deal when you think about the niches in the market; legion 7 2022 was the only option for those who want a powerful but professional looking machine (turn off the rgb and you are a pro) Lenovo basically turned their back to this design in 2023 and it's even more crazy when you think about that scar 18 doesn't have that iconic back port area. If they had sticked to 2022 design and just refreshed the display with a better miniled panel and used the new components they could have snatched the users who are looking at the ROG scar 16. and if they had a bigger 18 inch model they could have been an even more attractive option.
I honestly think that i got lucky with buying 2021 5 pro model (although the x16 ram upgrade i still will do it when convenient to me with wifi card),they haven't actually given much upgrades other than slightly better cooling even in 2023,it looks like it's still the same but even worse for legion 7 series
@@anirudhmathur5555 that's a pretty good model that even now everyone could buy and have a great time. It's only issue is the corsair IQ
@@mehmetgurdal true true
I still have hope that they'll release an 18 in model later this year hopefully with a mini led and in an ideal world an oled.
I hope that Lenovo brings the old 2022 Legion 7 design to a Legion 9! I still can't understand why they would make all of these downgrades otherwise!
it's the price. If they add all those features that are missing, the price would've gone above 3000 dollars. They are trying to stay under 3000 dollar, so they have better chance competing with other higher tier 40 series laptops, mostly which are above 3000 dollars.
My guess is that the new CPU and GPU were significantly more expensive, so they cut out a lot of creature comforts and deluxe build features in order to lessen the size of the price increase
@@madcrowmaxwell exactly, don't know about the CPUs though, but the 40 series GPUs extremely expensive eventually making the whole laptop expensive. That's why they cut all those extra features.
@@tiunchi A Legion 9 Pro = 4090 + Intel/Ryzen 9+ would be sweet.
@@tiunchi Maybe, but older top spec models already were well over $3000. I gues it is more about a price range. They don't want even lower tier 7pro models to cost over $3000. But for top spec models this is a real disapointment...
9:00 I think the same, Jarrod. Maybe they had no choice due to Nvidia's ridiculous pricing of the new GPUs. But then they shouldn't have added "pro" to the name as if it's even better than the last year's model
The Scar 18 is $2500 and I'd say is better engineered. Why would anyone pay more for this?
It looks kinda offensive and I wouldn't be really happy to show it everyone. But it's design serves to give better performance while keeping the costs. So I would buy that one despite its thicker bulkier, more gamery and gimmicky design. Because it delivers the money's worth
Awesome video as always and I’m pretty sure you hit the nail on the head with the pricing situation. Definitely seems like the step back in design was to save them, and by extension us, some money. Can’t wait to see the thermals and the benchmarks.
I hope the Pro 5 would have that max fan control option too. And does this thing have a keyboard shortcut to set the fans to max speed or do you have to go to the Vantage software to activate it?
Full review covering thermals, battery life, gaming performance & more coming ASAP! Until then, see how the RTX 4080 laptop GPU compares against the 3080 Ti next: kzhead.info/sun/areBo66reHiXl40/bejne.html Worth noting the RTX 4080 price is cheaper than the 3080 Ti Legion 7i right now, so more power for your money, but less features.
Will you be reviewing the new GT77 HX anytime soon?
Hey jarrod, which 40 series gpu is best to buy like in worth of money wise if we look at price to performance ?
@@gunnu85 Yes
@@angelolegusa6635 I cannot say until I test them all and compare.
Jarrod also bring one AMD 7000 Laptop
I'd be more interested in a comparison with the "older" 7i 11800H RTX 3080 laptop, especially thermals and how efficient it runs (like limiting a game to 60FPS on both machines, which one gets hotter/sips more power?). My 7i has the fans running in idle at all times and it's really annoying, hope the'll finally fix this.
Hey there I Purchased a Ryzen 5 Legion 5 in June and now the laptop has starting suffering from heavy lagging and glitching due to my ram being 80-90% when gaming so I am now thinking to upgrade from the stock ram to 2 x 8gb ADATA Premier DDR4 3200 SO-DIMM RAM.I was wondering if it would be compatible? Also would it be fine to mix ram brands because mine came pre installed with samsung ram or I might just buy a 16gb Adata and mix them both.
do the 4080 laptops have the NVidia display settings or is that like an update because i have a 3060 laptop and i have been wanting display settings for a while now
It might just be that new gen CPU + GPU are so damn expensive so they had to cut many features. Though it’s weird that they would do that on the Legion 7 instead of Legion 5
I want to ask a question may you think it is silly Does the mini led screen of msi gt77 13 would has any backlight bleeding Or dead pixels
Oh so they removed a bunch of features I don't at all care about and are therefore not going to charge me for things I'm not even going to use, but if you slap a 4080 and the latest gen processor it performs way better than a 30 series from last year? I absolutely understand why a reviewer would mention everything pertaining to the laptop but you guys acting like this is a massive downgrade are ridiculous. There's only a few things you actually need to care about when it comes to gaming laptops. Is the build quality trash, how good is the screen, how hot does it run, what kind of performance can you get out of it. That's it. Honestly, if there were an option to remove the touchpad, webcam, speakers and all the RGB nonsense on the sides of gaming laptops then I'd pick that to save money in a heartbeat. Frankly if you're gaming without a mouse and headphones or decent sound setup then what are you doing? Bottom line, this thing has more power than last year's, has a good screen and runs cool so yes, it's better than last year's.
No, no. no... Why did they downgrade this beautiful machine??? the back lighting, the chassey, touchpad feels much cheaper than on my Legion 7i. I wanted to change to this model because of new technologies and dlss 3... Big dissapointment! Im sure they will go back to normal next year with rtx 4080 ti... Thanks Jarrod!

So far it looks like sticking with asus this year is the way to go
Hey jarrod, will 2022 variants get the vantage update with power and fan control?? I've got legion 5i 2022.
Jarrod . Which ram does the legion 7i 2022 12800Hx have 1Rx8 or 1Rx16
Lenovo took an L with their legion lineup this year imo. We didn’t even hear about their slim 7 too
thankfully to you reviews i purchase in 2021 legion 5 17 (2021) with 3070 and ryzen 7 5800h, but im alredy looking for and upgrade, and im not a fan of the 16:10 screens, still usign a bigger external monitor for gaming and school, so is the new legion worth to go into it anyway or shuld i look to other brands who still made 16:9 and will bring rx4070/80 with new ryzen/intel cpu?
I just bought a 2022 Legion 7i about two weeks ago and was worried I would miss out on this new laptop. I needed a new laptop for school since I cad and couldn’t wait. SO glad I did not wait for this disappointment.
I suspect that maybe due to cooling/power consumption concerns, they removed some of the rgb/lighting and the changes in the design. Lenovo are a bit conservative so maybe these sacrifices were made to ensure that the high level of performance is maintained. It is weird they removed the air holes though.
Can you use the thunderbolt for display? Or only the back usb-c?
I wish Jarrod could review everything in my life: cars, airlines, dentists, restaurants.
Jarrod, do you have any insight on whether XMP support will be added to the Pro 7i Gen 8 for the native 5600MHz speeds? It appears all the DDR5 RAM kits, even those that are 5600MHz rated are capped at 4800MHz and there isn't any way of changing this in the bios.... The Legion Series Discord is going wild over this one as it's a major hinderance and negative for those looking to purchase the laptop. Really peculiar.
I just bought an Asus rog flow x13, and I don't see anywhere the option for the refresh rate to switch when I unplug my laptop, is it because I'm still using Windows 10 ? or is it just another bug in Armory Crate
Would the fingerprint work if we get a power button from the last gen? Or has the circuitry completely changed?
Can you please help me. I can't overclock my alienware M17 R5 amd edition. Any help is greatly appreciated, aw support knows nothing apart from reinstaling windows over n over. Please and thank you for your help.
I would look for a good deal on the 2022 7i,,im more than happy with the model I bought but their is clearly steps backwards with 2023 model. Mines built like a tank and very premium...theirs a step backwards here in lots of ways. Great review yet again...
for me this legion pro 7 is just like legion 5 pro with RGB, yeah not in every aspect but i feel just like that. of course lenovo can't use "5" because if they use that, price can't be higher as "7" family.
Nope everything you said was spot-on
So what are the actual model names (SKU or product i guess) that I should be looking for? So the 4000 series is cheaper chasis / features, but better performance and price if i understand correctly? Should i wait few weeks for something in between?
Hi , do you know if strix g18 will come with 4060 or amd?
those down grades will make choosing the older version over the new one easier because they are saving money by getting less but still decent power while also getting extra cool features. imo bumping the prices up instead of cutting corners to save money is better because they already have cheaper models for people that cant afford it while keeping the legion 7 position in the market
Great video as usual. When does the embargo for 4060/70 end?
If the clock speeds are better than last year/thermals improved, that's something at least. Looking forward to review very much!
is the 7i gen 7 still being sold because i cant find it anywhere
As somebody who has the 2022 Legion 7, I think they could add the fan control options to the 2022 models because there is some fan control in the third party Legion Toolkit software that couldn't be used in the 2021 or earlier model. Still not enough of a reason for me to upgrade.
why tf would you fucking upgrade from a 22 l7 to 23 l7p wtf
Lenovo: *laughs in downgrades*
Why would you upgrade an entire laptop within a Gen anyways… Jesus Christ imagine upgrading an entire desktop every Gen lmao
You can if you can find the latest Legion software.
I bet they wont, they even removed the option to switch the refresh rate on new legion 5 models
Do you know if the 99.9 battery can use in 5/i pro?
I think the cost cutting measures are to accommodate the new more expensive silicon while maintaining some sort of price parity with the previous year as not cause an outrage.
@Jarrod or any one else with this laptop - have you had issues with the WiFI? Mine is maxing at 9-10 Mb/s while last year's model that we have is coming in at 30 Mb/s (from the same spot in the house and controlling for WiFi use by other devices).
One question is dose it mean I can only add one 1T sad on this machine rather than a 2T or 4T if I want to upgrade the storage by myself???
I really hope that the Ventage to costusumize fan speed will be applied to the 2022 models too. i bought the 2022 a few months ago.
hey, Jarrod. I ordered the MSI raider 4090. Im scared if your review on it will be bad and ill end up returning it LOL (any hints?)
when the rtx4060 video expected? are you going to use the xmg oasis v2?
Any chance you could if sound works under Linux for this model? I have a hacked up out of tree patch that gets it working with last years Gen 7 model, I'm not doing that again. Having more subdued lighting is a big plus for me. I have the Gen 7 model and I would have to make sure to cover the light on the top of the lid when I put my laptop to sleep at night to be able to get some rest... Fortunately, I eventually figured out if I disabled the lighting (Fn+down), the lighting would be disabled when putting the laptop to sleep. I think losing the 2.5 Gps Ethernet, the lights for the rear IO are downgrades... My track pad doesn't seem to be glass? Otherwise, I don't think I care. The pressure sensitive keys are nice theoretically... But I never took advantage of them. In a few cases, I even had issues getting a controller to work until I realized the game was confused by thinking the pressure sensitive keys was my gamepad. Argh. But please, if you could test speaker output in Linux, that would be helped.
I aint complaining on the featurea but rather on the chassis deaign why they mqde it hard to pry open as compared from prev model?
Hi Jarrod, Would you please suggest me which one is better 🙏 both same price? 1-asus tuf dash f15 i7-12700h, Ddr5, 3060rtx 140w, storage came with pcie 3.0. 2-acer nitro 5 ana 515 i9-12800h, ddr5, 3060rtx 140w, storage came with pcie 4.0 ❤tq in advance
Very nice video! I got the 2022 legion 7 because of this video! I always do research, and I almost considered getting a pro 7, until I saw this. One thing I did notice on my laptop is Fn+Q is instant, whereas on non-fingerprint legions take a second to switch color. It's too bad Lenovo stopped selling these.
How do you turn off the rear port lighting?? I use a piece of tape to cover mine on my 2021 legion 7.
You should be able to turn them off with fn+U
that vents above the keyboard are heated the lid when it closed.. so ive always open it a bit to prevent overheating the panel when using primarily with external monitor
What's more battery efficient, a native 60Hz display or any high refresh rate display running G/FreeSync @ 60Hz?

Dear Jarrod, I just got my Lenovo 5 pro, and I have a question about charging options as the standard 300W charger is very heavy. 1) Can I charge the Legion 5 pro with other charger than with the original charger with 300 watts? 2) Could you either make a video or reply to this comment. I cannot find any information online about this. Thank you for your amazing videos! Best wishes, Johan
I'm still bummed they didn't go with Mini-LED.
Or OLED, almost any other brand have both option this year, damn even Acer.
@Jonny Tronx Not Alienware, and they are the only other ones with AMD Ryzen CPUs in 16/18 inch laptops.
Yep, especially at this price. Not even for HDR gaming, just being able to watch movies + shows in HDR should be a given for a laptop this expensive.

Who on earth though it would be a good idea for a 10gb/s ethernet speed capable machine to downgrade the port from 2.5gb/s to 1gb/s? Like, just why? Also the new design doesn't look as clean or as beautiful as the last year one (really Lenovo, on a "premium" laptop, we are coming back to a plastic touchpad). But the ethernet speed is just too huge of a minus these days, especially where I live and can have up to 10gb/s speeds.
Is the new charger compatible with old Legion 5 Pro & 7 ??

Bro I have a doubt. I have Lenovo IdeaPad gaming 3 laptop and it has its exhaust vents below the display due to which the lower left and lower right corner of the display is heating and it doesn't feel like normal heating(overheating tbh) So is it going to damage the display in future ?
If it's under load the exhausted air is going to feel fairly hot, that's how gaming laptops are. As for if it could damage the display, I don't imagine it does, I haven't heard of this being a prevalent issue for laptops with exhaust vents facing the screen.
@@blasianking4827ya most of the laptops have their exhaust fans on the keyboard but in this IdeaPad one ,the vents close when the lid closes and it opens when the lid is opened. It will depend on your laptop. If you have a Lenovo and it's not listed in Vantage then it likely means you don't have a mux switch. Still a bit sleeker even if there's some questionable design changes. It does seem like most of these design downgrade has kept the cost slightly down. Still begs the question of whether the Legion Pro 7(i) and Pro 5(i) are successors to the Legion 5(i) Pro and 7(i) or a new product entirely. I'm pretty sure they'll refresh the Legion 5 instead.
I may be in the minority but I always liked the lights in the vents and the customizability. For example in my model I have the front and side turned off but have the rear Lenovo (in the 2021 model it's just one letter) and the vents blasting rainbow against my wall and I like it. The move from glass to plastic touch pad IS a bummer imo for someone like me who comes from the mac ecosystem and is a heavy touch pad user, it's like second nature to me which is I guess why I like a good one. Removing fingerprint sensor also a very big deal to me, unless they have added windows hello to the face cam finally? If so, that's an 100% acceptable trade off to me and even preferred. Edit, cam doesn't seem to have IR sensors from what I can see here, so no windows hello is 100% dealbreaker. Next!
Just replaced an Alienware with 1080 ti for the legion 7 slim. Was going to build this year but just liked the portability. It’s insane how prices are right now.
Mine will be here on the 15th (it's 2am on the 14th now). Super excited even though the chassis downgrades are just that, downgrades.
I would be concerned about logeivity of the touchpad. have the 2021 legion 7i, and the glass touchpad is a big reason I went with it.... means the touchpad will not wear out
Will Custom mode make its way to the 2022 model?
Hi guys I want to buy gaming laptop that is portable, have a long battery life, fans not that loud and it doesn't have heat problems under 1700 dollars if you have any suggestions I will be so grateful.
So everything that you'd notice when working or gaming are better - 4080 significantly better, but some of the bells and whistles have become more muted/removed. I think the chassis is magnesium and recycled aluminium so I'm not sure there's actually plastic on it? I've never been a fan of the more OTT RGB in modern laptops anyway so I don't see many of the new changes as negative. The speed of the ethernet is a little annoying but 2.5Gbps isn't that common still even though it's been around for ages. As you say maybe they're allowing for an even higher priced option to have some of the more gamery-features added back in further down the line, or will just take all feedback into account for next year and maybe then it'll go back in that direction again? Either way, it's still impressively fast.
Hey Jarrod, I recently purchased the Lenovo legion slim 7i, and your reviews were really helpful in that purchase. Thanks for that. I'm loving the laptop and would highly recommend it for someone looking for a slim laptop, capable of doing some decent gaming. Thanks again.
I was interested in grabbing one too, what settings do you usually play games on?
@@brdnmlna I have the 2021 slim and I still max out my games, worse case: high settings. This year’s will be even better
@@brdnmlna I've playing on max till now. No heating issues or anything.
@@ktjrox11 Would you still recommend it at this point,? I've been having a lot of difficulty deciding which laptop to get as I'm going into college, but the 2023 slim that I'm looking at (intel i9, nvidia 4070, 1 tb ssd, etc). looks appealing
Got my last week, just returned yesterday since the blue screen crash happened twice. Decide to buy a PC and keep my macbook for going outside.
