The Legion 9i makes all Laptops look Pathetic

The Legion 9i Gen 8 feels like a gaming laptop from the future. It has completely unique features like an integrated liquid cooler, replaceable keycaps and switches and high end specs with some of the lowest temperatures we've seen. This is meant to be the best Legion laptop in their lineup, a flagship that showcases what's possible in 2023. And because of that, it can make all other 2023 gaming laptops feel pretty pathetic.
** Our unit contained a pre-production battery configuration so battery life couldn't be tested. **

  • Just bought one with 64GB RAM, 4090, and 2TB. BTW, don't forget to speak to a sales rep (you can chat on the website) and inquire about a discount. I asked and said "I'd be dumb not to ask" and they replied, asking if I'm a teacher, military, student, or medical person. I said that, unfortuantely, I'm just a retired bedridden engineer -- and they still gave me almost a $300 discount on a $5,000 USD bill. I mean, it was still like a 6% discount or something and you can't complain about that just for two minutes of time!

    • TGP of 80w was why I stopped looking at the P1. I bet an asus g14 will run rings around the p1.

      @sflxn@sflxn7 ай бұрын
    • @@sflxn naturally, this is highly subjective, but for me, it really didn’t. I’ve sold my ASUS to upgrade to the P1. There’s much more to a laptop than its list of specs. ASUS had a worse keyboard, trackpad, screen and customer support, but it was also cheaper, so not a like for like comparison. I just wanted a bigger screen without adding too much weight. For me, P1 is the best thin and light mobile workstation out there if you want the ultimate mix of quality and portability, not if you just want highest possible performance. Lenovo’s Legion series are a better fit purely for performance, as long as you don’t mind something thicker and heavier (so you’re trading off portability for performance). The Legion is a gaming-first machine with balls-out performance where you can also run productivity apps. The P1 is a mobile workstation where ergonomics, reliability and comfort comes first, so it has conservative tuning to tame fan noise and chassis temps. It can also happen to run games rather well on the side, but it’s not its primary purpose in life. To say the P1 is useless because it doesn’t run its GPU at a zillion watts is like saying a Rolls-Royce is useless because it can’t go at 200 mph. It was never designed to do that. It’s designed for users with different priorities and different preferences. I’m not hating on ASUS by the way, G14 was a really nice machine for the price and I have an ASUS X670E Extreme motherboard in my desktop PC with an ASUS Harpe mouse. It’s good to have options from different brands. It’s just that when it comes to Windows/Linux laptops, I prefer ThinkPads over anything else and I’m excited to finally have a thin and light ThinkPad which can run anything I throw at it at a good level of performance without sounding like a jet engine. The battery life still sucks, but that’s inevitable with any Intel laptop with comparable specs.

Plus I went for the 4080 because of the 12gb vram so in later years I still have some buffer. Plus that miniled screen is great and so bright. Def notice the haloing on dark backgrounds when the screen is in multi zone config but it's an easy fix by changing to single zone. The laptop is fast and very well built. I'd definitely recommend it. If you feel the 4070 is enough and you want to save 700, then yeah go for the lower spec. Just a great laptop. • Different people value different things. As a former legion 7i and now a razer blade 16 owner I can assure you both brands are great in their own way, but focus on different things. You normally don't buy razer if you want absolute best performance or the best price. You do it if you value a certain look. Lenovo on the other hand offers a much better cooling solution and normally a better price to perfomance value (questionable with current legion 9 prices though...) My point: I would not change my blade 16 for a legion 9, even though it certainly performs much better. I don't want the 'gamer look' of a legion. Simple as that.

      @Sachrial1@Sachrial17 ай бұрын
    • @@UrdnotAkongo Yeah. Obviously Im purely talking about the pricing. Imo price to performance is still horrible for both. The Asus Scar 18 with 4080 and 13980hx was recently on sale here for 3000€. For the same specs the blade 16 is 1000 and the legion 9 1400€ more expensive.

Temps are probably fine for an hour after that you would probably burn your fingers. Spend 3.5k and build a badass gaming rig then spend another 1k for a lower pc and just stream your desktop to the laptop and sidestep the temp issue.

  • As a current Legion 7 2021 user, this Legion 9 seems to be stepping in an interesting direction for the flagship Legion lineup, but not quite there yet. While I appreciate the effort making the top lid unique, it needs to be cleaner. This design is not edgy enough to compete with MSI, or classy enough to compete with the Blade, and the Legion audience tends to prefer a more lowkey look. Maybe this design can be reserved for special editions. Port placement also seems weird, both the sides and even the back, like they're not evenly spaced out, which is definitely an eye sore for OCD people like me. The internal water-cooling system looks cool, but I have doubts when this is put into long term usage. Lenovo could even consider implementing an additional removable cooler like those XMGs. Soldered RAMs is another turn-off for me. Removability of parts has always been part of Lenovo laptops, maybe this a temporary solution for that internal cooling, but hopefully they'll figure out another way without soldering the RAMs in later versions. Perhaps when RTX5000 series arrive, I'll jump on one of these Legion 9s if they've made these improvements.
