That speech in the middle means more now I think 😅
We listened this song twice at my daughter ‘s funeral. She died -at 24 years- by a car accident in 2016. She was great fan of paolo since his first performance at the roundhouse in london. Now, 7 years later , i listen and cry but she stands near me and whispers in my ear, freedom rain on me... I am 60 years old , this song gives me the power to live on.

God Bless you and may you find peace

We live in times of idiocracy and people who just strangle their soul do death. What is done here is too complex and deep for the current reality. That’s sad.

there is indeed a very deep message that gets overshadowed by the artistry of all involved (gotta say that i'm partial to the horns). i'm only worried that it may be too prophetic; like stephen stills said so long ago, "stop children, what's that sound? Google legal name fraud. . . . . . . . its illegal to use a legal name.
Hold on ! Greetings from Germany!!!
@@KonveZ lmao you fruitcake, people believe anything these days
… too true
@@thyowen this is freeman of the land stuff. I was into it about 6 years ago. The belief isn't that it's illegal to use your legal name. I don't know where this guy got that from. The belief is that your birth certificate acts as a strawman of yourself in name, and that is expressed by capitalisation. And that when you defend yourself in court you're defending this strawman that is assigned to you by birth via a birth certificate, which is property of the state. Which means by extention, you're property of the state through this written document. And that if you state yourself as "[first name] of the family [surname]" you're now truly acting on behalf of yourself rather than your strawman. But it really makes no difference to the court. Mainly, because it's a load of hokum. Yes, we are not free. Not in thr truest sense. For civilisations to survive they need to wield power. This means; working, no dodging tax, no claiming property for your own without purchase, and sticking to the laws of the land (both criminal and civil). I despise this. I don't want to hurt others, or steal from them, or even break common law in any other regard. But I don't wish for power to be wielded over myself. But even I know that for the survival of the state all rules must apply equally. You can't allow some people to get away with paying no tax and taking private or publicly owned land/ or property and not others. The 'freemen of the land' think if they use certain ways they can circumnavigate the system to be "free". But that doesn't work in reality. The only thing which would work is anarchy. Meaning; a destruction of the state which requires such things. Which I am in support of. And frankly, I can actually see happening within my life time. (If you can check back in this comment in 5-10 years time. I was wrong)
My mother loved Paolo, i sat by her bedside in her final days and played his music to her, even though she couldn't respond i knew she could hear his music. We played this song at her funeral in 2015. I have not been able to listen to any of Paolos music until this moment. Still miss you every day Mum.

This is a once in a generation song. It's a masterpiece of songwriting. It has more soul and feeling than anything I can think of in the last 30 years.... and this performance is quite simply perfect. People will still listen to this in 100 years and be blown away. 👏
Totally agree the lyrics blew me away when I first heard them last year. Then I found out it contains a speech by Charlie Chaplin.. so powerful.
In the last 30 years, it's a great song, you must not know Prince, Ray Charles, Michael Jackson or Stevie Wonder, young men who've done this style of music longer than anyone in this band has been alive.... with respect

what a voice, and what a voice of wisdom and humanity : (Charlie Chaplin) To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed The bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress The hate of men will pass, and dictators die And the power they took from the people will return to the people And so long as men die, liberty will never perish Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men Machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful To make this life a wonderful adventure Let us use that power! The emotions in his voice is almost like his soul is speaking. What a powerful song.
That's exactly what it is. You should sing and you will feel it as you hear it. singing is for ourselves and then others hear it and feel it like you felt him. Andy Dass couldent have been said better man
Andy Dass nailed it!
Could not agree more. Music is a passion that if you strive to see the bigger picture rather than commercial bullshit spoonfed to all of us you can see the true message and meaning behind the feelings and ideologies another artist believes in. Music will never die nor will ever be unnoticed by people who understand. Music is like food. Untill you learn how its made you will now understand good from bad. The Great Dictator speech was one of the most intense speeches ever made. Even though it was made for a cinematic approach the sincere reality behind its meaning is still relevant to this day and age. Music is the key to everything.
Beautifuly said
I prefer my religion to be a means to a hopeful end. All is vain otherwise, whether we are sheep or not. I choose to worship Life. Which I am dependent on, & not free from. The Bible says that we love, because God first loved us. Free from all else. Yet you speak of others, as slaves. Who are chained to your own selves. Who make idols of men. ....do not worship angels..
Almost a prediction of what we have experienced in the last 5 years with these lyrics.

My god what a masterpiece
His best song IMO, I love how he included the Charlie Chaplin quote!
And why exactly do you love that he included the Charlie Chaplin quote?
Ben Cargin Because I like the quote, is that not reason enough?
+Callum Connolly hmmm is that a reason, why did you answer that question, it is up to you what you like, i loves the tune too!!!
+Callum Connolly I agree! it IS his best song. i haven't really gotten into any of his other stuff because i expected it to sound somewhat similar to this and it just left me disappointed. haha
+Callum Connolly I agree with you in most parts. It could well be his best song as to date, production wise etc. His songs always have a meaning or a message to portray, the best thing is we all portray them differently. Giving the song inner meaning unto ourselves. I agree the quote was a bit of genius and really strips back the song to a level where the quote itself with the music would make it powerful enough, but with the added lyrics and voice gives it no constraints to the power and profound message however you may read the song to be. It is but a piece of art. We are the lucky ones because it is not just a canvas, it has has the audio and passion you can hear and feel and through that you can then be the painter / sculpture and direct your own imagery for it. No one is correct in saying the song means this and that. You are only correct in knowing what this song means to you. Through that, if you find it beautiful, then it has meaning in your life. If you find it horrible, you too have found its own meaning in your life. Pieces of art like this are rare. Does it mean it is more signifigant than other than other songs? No. Other songs have more meaning to other people, though none the less it is a masterpiece in its own right, love it or hate it you will never have a middle ground with this song. It either speaks to you or it doesn't. The Chaplin speech gave the song a backbone / a structure for the song to become real. I agree with you and does make the song what it is and you now cannot imagine the song being the way it is now any other way. So 2 thumbs up. I concur.
If a song like this had come out 20+ years ago, it would go down as a classic generations for years to come. It's a sad day when such an amazing song falls in obscurity and is crowded out by the plague that has infested the charts now-a-days. Sensational Song
You are absolutely spot on with this post! Instead, we are bombarded everyday with 'music' that all sounds identical and told that's what we should be listening to.
Couldnt have put it better myself my friend!!im afraid it happens all too often too!!

Amen... Watched him live last night, a born performer and definitely the most underrated artists out there.
Been here since 2016... and I'm never leaving. This is one of the world's best songs, ever.
I love the message. We can pray for salvation. But no gets up off the ground for us. No one gets over the hate and heartbreak for us. That Is our job. But if we make it to the other side of it...our freedom is waiting for us..struggle through it my brothers and sisters✊️
I took it differently, I see it as everyone acts as if they are good people because they follow their particular religion. They don’t truly question what is it to live ethically, and how to treat others, only what their religion allows. People should stop looking for a creator to one day right our wrongs, we need to be the change we want to see in this universe. It’s not just getting over hate and heartbreak, it’s stopping it entirely
this song never gets old, I have watched this abbey road session version over and over for six years now, and its still a gem

***** Very constructive comment...You must have a superb intellectual capacity to come up with that stuff. I don't know about you but I have invested a considerable amount of time over the past 2 years reading up on this...my conclusion was vote yes like many millions more have concluded. Oh and Nutini is Scottish...this guy isn't dumb...the song has many things that link to independence.
Lara Simpson I can't see why switzerland, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, the netherlands, Finland, Denmark , Austria can all do it and Scotland can't. We have the most amount of oil bar Norway...than these countries...combined. We have a billion pound whisky industry, top class universities, 25% of europes wind and tide capacity, a billion pound construction industry, very smart population and a massive tourism industry to name a few...and thats without a government looking out for us. I don't think there has ever been a better equipped country for independence than Scotland!
You have completely missed the point of the song
Ronan Murphy I'm not the only one: www.smithsmagazine.co.uk/2014/03/18/is-paolo-nutini-trying-to-say-something-about-scottish-independence/ Whilst the song has a "reason" behind it nobody can deny that the timing of it combined with the fact that he is Scottish himself that leads to this sort of pondering. If it was and Welsh singer I wouldn't wonder this...also everyone in the western world knows what connotations freedom has.

We are proud individuals living on the city But the flames couldn't go much higher We find gods and religions to To paint us with salvation But no one No nobody Can give you the power To rise over love And over hate Through this iron sky That's fast becoming our minds Over fear and into freedom Oh, that's life Left dripping down the walls Of a dream that cannot breathe In this harsh reality Mass confusion spoon fed to the blind Serves now to define our cold society From which we'll rise over love Over hate From this iron sky That's fast becoming our minds Over fear and into freedom You just got to hold on! You just got to hold on! Oh oh oh oh (To those who can hear me, I say, do not despair The misery that is now upon us is but the passing of greed The bitterness of men who fear the way of human progress The hate of men will pass, and dictators die And the power they took from the people will return to the people And so long as men die, liberty will never perish Don't give yourselves to these unnatural men Machine men with machine minds and machine hearts! You are not machines, you are not cattle, you are men! You, the people, have the power to make this life free and beautiful To make this life a wonderful adventure Let us use that power! Let us all unite!) And we'll rise over love And over hate Through this iron sky That's fast becoming our minds Over fear And into freedom Into freedom! From which we'll rise over love And over hate Through this iron sky That's fast becoming our minds Over fear and into freedom Freedom! Oh, from which we'll rise over love And over hate Through this iron sky That's fast becoming our minds Over fear and into freedom Freedom! Freedom! Rain on me! Rain on me!
Let this go to the top for the people using a smartphone
+1
Ik heb de hele tekst opgeschreven, zo enorm goed!💕
it's "to bait us" not to "paint us"
@@wojtekkubiakmusic was about to comment exactly that
Heard Paolo Nutini for the first time today on the Andy and Alex livestream.I'm an instant fan!
Funky cigarette is a Scottish rite
2023, The song, an absolute anthem. The speech, incredibly relevant today.
paolo is one of the most criminally underrated artists in the world. true art
100% brother x
Nutini's voice in this performance is on another level. It's like he channeled the very essence of Bob Marley, Roger Daltrey, and Marvin Gaye into an intoxicating blend of anguish and rage.
So much Marley in this
Couldn't have been said better. Spot on.
First time I heard this song - was getting massive Roger Daltrey "Love Reign O'er Me" vibes, which is a testament to both Paolo and the power of this song. Mesmerising.
"Intoxicating Anguish & Rage" .. I feel it.
This man is amazing. His voice his presence ... Where is he please come back give some more amazing songs
A song for the crazy world in which we are living
I've been to his live in Milan last week. Definitely the best concert I've experienced in my entire life. Cried like a child a few times. Paolo is a genius and a blessing to this world.
i can’t believe this song’s been out for 5 years and im just hearing it
i feel the same way bro !!
Saw Paolo live in Indianapolis in a really small venue maybe 10 years ago, he was fantastic!
Imagine what people feel when they discover classical music, quite amazing ;)
Vashaun Price same here i don’t understand ??? feel like i have been living on the moon or something
Shame, he's so raw and talented. What an artist
a young man with an old soul...
True Scottish SOUL
This is the one of the greatest song of this century!
Just heard this cover by Mo Jamil. How have I never heard of Paolo before 🥺 beautiful soulful voice and this song ugh I am a new fan😊❤❤❤
This is definitely up there with one of the best live sessions ever, so poignant and relevant now too. This song needs to reach the minds of ever human on this planet.
Couldn't agree more, in fact I'd say the best live session ever imo!
His live performance on jools Holland singing lovin machine is better
I'm sharing it heaps
I wish, but I’m too cynical
And always will be because us humans always fuck it up!!!!
Mayans brought me here. I will definitely be checking out his other music! Love this soulful song!
If you’re reading this, Congrats, you got amazing taste in music!
You can hear and feel the pain and hope of the human experience in his voice. Absolutely transcendent.
_thanks for clarification, because I really don't know what to make of this. I can't stand the blues vibes_
Transcendent that's a word you don't here ever day.nice word's.
Fallen World same porfile pic
I think its about being brought up in Glasgow where the sky is grey 360 days a year.
Dodgy Davo or escaping the chains of a broken union
Vote yes to free our nation
Please, do leave the union! It'll mean that the rest of the UK no longer has to sink taxes into a nation whose industry is non existent, and whose citizens receive £700 more than the average UK citizen. If Scotland leave, you can wave goodbye to your cheaper university fees as well as the majority of your international trading arrangements. Bon voyage.
Blazara You are an utter imbecile.
shifterbabe69 Do explain how you have come to that conclusion. Scotland contribute very little to the UK.
Nobody seems to have pointed it out to him yet, but I'm also going to assume his heads too far up his pompous arse to do the research for himself, so il do it for him. Blazara, Scotland Subsidises the UK. HEAVILY. And has done for as long as the "Union"s historical Financial records go to show. University fees, NHS prescription charges etc ALL come from the Scottish budget "granted" to us by Westmintser. The budget they set is and always has been smaller than the sum of taxation revenue we put in to the UK system. So please, take your Bigoted ill informed Nationalistic self where it doesn't look so silly. Peace x
highlandwildcat31 I'm not a Nationalist by any stretch of the imagination; I despise the very notion of rallying around a flag. I would just like to get as good a deal from my government as is possible. -shrug- I have no real problem with Scotland being in the UK; but when people pull the whole "Freedom for Scotland" bollocks, I feel forced to respond in a way that will piss them off; because frankly, Scotland do not have a bad deal. Being in the UK gives Scotland an economic foothold for trade throughout the rest of the world which many have speculated would not be the case if Scotland were independent. Seeming as you didn't actually provide any statistics to support your claim, I shall; but for the opposing side: Scotland accounts for 8.4% of the UK population, 8.3% of the UK's total output and 8.3% of the UK's non-oil tax revenues - but 9.2% of total UK public spending. Scottish Executive figures for 2009-10 show that spending per capita in Scotland was £11,370, versus £10,320 for the UK. In other words, spending in Scotland was £1,030 - or 10% higher - per head of population than the UK average. Many people will argue that Scotland (simply based on Geography, and disregarding the fact that many of the workers and company owners come from other areas of the UK) inputs up to 90% of Britain's oil exports. This then skews the figures to make Scotland look like they're independently putting more in to the economy than they're receiving. However, North Sea oil is drying up quickly and is thought to practically die out as a source of income within the next few decades. As I said before, many of the companies and company heads are not of Scottish nationality. With all that taken into account; if Scotland do "gain" their independence, they're going to have a major problem within the next few decades. A big, big problem. Scotland will end up with a national deficit of billions every year as soon as the North Sea is no longer a viable avenue for oil exports. Seeming as Scotland has very little in the way of industry, it simply can't get a better deal on it's own. That, partnered with the fact that being in the UK provides Scotland with trade opportunities across the globe, makes an independent Scotland seem very bleak. Please don't label me as "bigoted" or "ill informed" when, unlike you, I have actually done some contextualised research.
My best friend took his own life 2 yrs ago in September this song is 1 of the few that reminds me of him the most... sung with so much emotion and grit will forever be 1 of my top 5 thank you Paolo for giving us this absolute blinder you are truly an amazing artist x
Underrated is an understatement. Friend recommended to me. One of the most beautiful, powerful songs I’ve ever heard 😳 🤯
Iron sky makes you want to carry on living! We’ll be on top sooner than later
His lyrics can mean one thing, but when he sings his heart away it adds on to another level. For example that “FREEDOM” at the end was so powerful. Paolo knows how to transfer his feelings to another person’s heart.
This is one of those songs that wakes up a sector of your soul you didn't know existed. Holy shit.
"Mass confusion spoon fed to the blind" Truer now than ever
his voice, a gift from God
+eirini papagewrgiou There is no god. His voice is a gift from Nature.
+RySec Newton thank you for not being an idiot.
+xGribbles It really pisses me off. The worst one is when a doctor saves someone and they say "Thank God". Yea fuck the doctor who just saved you..
+RySec Newton Exactly, it's the work of a skilled individual Not some made up man in the sky, who has been created to make people feel safe.
+xGribbles is that such a bad thing?
MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!! Paolo one of the most beautiful voices on the planet!!!👏
The very best Scotland has to offer! 🏴
This song is like a prayer, anthemic... and there is just something about Paolo's voice that makes me think of Bob Marley and his very special type of timeless soulfulness. And not too many people make me think of Bob Marley.
The bob marley is a yes, theres something so similar its amazingggg
I was just thinking about the same! The Bob Marley vibes in the lyrics and his voice are uncanny!
Agreed
Totally agree Bob's socialist idealism is unsurpassed but Paolo nails the will of the Scottish people perfectly with this tune 🏴

Not only is Paolo's voice outstanding, the instrumental is absolutely top notch here.
This song blows my mind, the power u feel when he sings this is just unreal. This should be the song of our time, just incredible ❤
I feel the same, it IS the song of our time and it spans over generations when your heart is open, like an anonymous revolution that anybody with the same passion can connect to....
After listening to this for 9 years i think its time for a appreciation comment 👏👏👏
👏😉
