There is absolutely no denying the fact that you haven't heard of Leylah Annie Fernandez by now. I mean, who doesn't know her? Runner up to win the 2021 US Open, winning the 2021 Monterrey Open, and finishing 24 in rankings is quite impressive. However, just like any other player, she, too, would not have reached anywhere if her family hadn't backed her in crucial times.
Leylah was born in Montreal to Jorge and Irene. She is the second child of her parents and has good control of English, French and Spanish. At an early age, she started displaying a passion for sports. She competed in track-and-field activities and played volleyball and football. However, she realised that she was cut out for tennis and started practising hitting her shots against the basement wall, an activity that required many hours of her attention. During her formative years, she drew inspiration from Justin Henin, a former world number 1 that had a sparkling career.
