  • I know all of the attention is on Emma Raducanu and rightfully so. Leylah Fernandez had an amazing tournament! She defeated three top 5 players and one top 20 player on her way to the finals. That is incredible! I wish both ladies the very best and a bright future in tennis.

    • I was rooting for Emma, and am really pleased she won. However, let's take nothing away from Leylah's achievements, which are fantastic, and I am really impressed by both her tennis and her maturity, just like Emma. I don't agree that all the attention is on Emma - it's also on Leylah, and rightly so. What a future women's tennis has with these two! In my opinion, they will be the Federer - Nadal rivals/friends that men's tennis produced for the next 10 - 15 years.

    • @@lr1844 Yes, but did you notice how calmly Emma behaved. That analytical mind of hers was not thinking "I'm 30-40", she was just mentally preparing for the next point. I do believe that Leylah may have thought that Emma had asked for the medical time out, not knowing that she was ordered to take it as the rules dictate. It was a key point in the match, and Leylah let her emotions get the better of her for a short time. But she's just turned 19, let's cut her some slack for now, and let's see how she behaves in future. BTW, I'm a massive Emma fan, and not that fond of Leylah. Mainly because she blames her loss on her mistakes. But Emma kept forcing her behind the baseline, that both cause Leylah to make mistakes and gave Emma opportunities to make winners.

    • @@davidkeenan5642 Emma trying to stay calm and mentally focused was a smart way to rein in the emotions given the high stakes of the match. Initially I thought Fernandez hadn't seen the injury but arguing for minutes right where she can clearly see her is a bit too far... After the finals I just liked Emma a little more and her serving and returning was pretty spectacular. I'm so psyched to see both of them play at the Australian Open.

She mentioned how she knew “today” (September 11th, the day of the finals that year) was a very hard day for American and for New York in particular. She said she hopes she can be as resilient as America has been. It was that moment that turned me from a Leylah supporter to a Leylah FAN. • Leylah, in these two weeks I completely fell in love with you, your tennis and your personality :) I was so impressed with your active, assertive and very creative style of play - not only crushing forehand and precise backhand in all directions and any depth, but also these unexpected, perfectly placed dropshots (it could be your trademark!), confident volleys, selfless and smart defence and even your service, that helped you in many most crucial moments. But even more I was fascinated by the unique combination of adamant mentality and charming attitude. I honestly can't remember such a strong character since Justine: doesn't matter what score is on a table, what player's rank is on the other side - it literally took wrecked legs to defeat you. And the way you celebrate big points, the way you smile after saving matchpoints - yes, this is definitely your superpower :) So, congrats on the amazing tournament, happy to see you smile again, good luck in Indian Wells and many-many other big competitions. Cheers from Russia, Leylah, keep it going!
