@MrSalmangilani Жыл бұрын
This comments section has proved to me just how sheltered and protected many westerners are. In the global south, more so in SE Asia and Africa, this how workshops look like. I was born and raised in Kenya and my dad used to disassemble and reassemble the engine on his Peugeot 504 wagon, and put it back together, without torque wrenches, steel capped boots, or helmets. All done in a weekend and ready to take us to work and school on the following Monday. Of course he used to send the heads elsewhere for machining but that was about it. All he had was very basic and analogue equipment. That 504 ran for nearly 35 years and he loved it and so did I. He knew it like the back of his hand. I too learnt to work on it by watching him do it. Sometimes he had to improvise tools because the actual tools specified by peugeot either could not be found in Africa or if they did, they'd break the family budget. Same with spare parts, he used to sometimes take donor parts from other models and then modify them to fit that peugeot, coz to get originals, one had to import them from France at expensive prices. That 504 ran for nearly 35 years until I bought him a late model toyota coz I figured he was getting too old. Even then he still didn't want to let go of that 504 wagon. It's still parked at his place and it still runs.. I wonder how some of you would survive if we somehow had an apocalypse and all modern day luxuries were knocked out of commission i.e no electricity, no sophisticated equipment, no fancy electronic gadgetry. All modern tools are good and they greatly simplify the work and make it safer, but many people cannot afford them especially in Africa. Heck many people don't even use hoists to lift engines out of the car. So, think about it before you somehow conclude the the guys in this video are unskilled or somewhat primitive just coz they are working with sandals or aren't wearing overalls or they aren't using torque wrenches or other fancy gear that you keep in your heated/air-conditioned garage. There is a big wide world away from Europe and America...
@ombidho1 Жыл бұрын
I guess there was a reason why he had to rebuild the engine so often…
@MachineGunJelly584 Жыл бұрын
@@MachineGunJelly584 You're talking about an engine that was designed and built in the 1960's buddy. That's when they started building those 504 engines. Matter of fact, the last one was built in 1980. Show me any car from the 60's to 70's that didn't require any major rework. They all suffered from rust, misalignment issues, lose engine tolerances and clearances, carburettor issues, oil consumption, sludge etc, just to name a few. Even the Datsun that your grandparents drove in the West suffered this, so yes vehicles and engines from that era needed constant rebuilds. Infact engine rebuilders actually found themselves rectifying defects from the factory. Ever heard of the Leylands in the UK, or the Holden Camiras in Australia?? Go read about their build quality and then get back to me. Whatever it is, you think you're saying in your comment is in reality an irrelevant and frankly based on a lack of awareness of how engines were built back then... I noticed you also conveniently missed my point about that car running to this day. It wouldn't be running without my dad' ingenuity in keeping it running all the way to 2022..

The strategy is to let the younger children tighten first depending on the torque level you are looking to achieve. Also the tools play a part too. Low torque= lighter and smaller tools. After years of doing it they will tighten pretty close to spec.

@haydonditchburn2194 Жыл бұрын
SORRY BUT NO that is not how it works.. the more you do in mechanics the Stronger you get so the more you can tighten things.. if you happen to be having an off day the torque wont be the same.. the tolerence inside an engine for torque is specific for a reason if not done to specs can cause warping of the parts uneven wear on bearing surfaces and in the case of cylinder heads can cause warping of the whole head.

I would like to have a Hilux with that engine where I live, but Toyota can't import them to US, because they would get too good of mileage and would last too long. Very impressive rebuild, lots of hard work, team work, and technical work.
Masha Allah ❤so great work
I wonder how long before this van comes back for another rebuild
Too cheap for oil change but engine "overhaul" once a year is a must lol
You'll be surprised to know that they run for years after such rebuilds. I've had two different engines rebuilt in Pakistan. Ones on it's 4th year as a daily driver and another on it's first.
I guess there was a reason why he had to rebuild the engine so often…
It wouldn't be running without my dad' ingenuity in keeping it running all the way to 2022..

good effort, but I see why it blew a headgasket previously. No way you can block sand a deck like that... that need to be machine properly especially with a turbo setup.
They will seal the head gasket with standard camel mucus. It is scraped off the various orifices of the beast while it is sleeping.
The strategy is to let the younger children tighten first depending on the torque level you are looking to achieve. Also the tools play a part too. Low torque= lighter and smaller tools. After years of doing it they will tighten pretty close to spec.
I agree
You think...?
SORRY BUT NO that is not how it works.. the more you do in mechanics the Stronger you get so the more you can tighten things.. if you happen to be having an off day the torque wont be the same.. the tolerence inside an engine for torque is specific for a reason if not done to specs can cause warping of the parts uneven wear on bearing surfaces and in the case of cylinder heads can cause warping of the whole head.
