Captain Wingnut shows you how he refills 1lb propane bottles.
If you try this at home, Use Your Common Sense and Think about what you’re doing.
This gas is EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE.
If you’re not sure of yourself DON’T DO IT

Living in the mountains far from civilization we have to re-use and re-cycle as much as possible and it helps the wallet too.
This is the safest way I know to refill these little bottles.
NOTE: THE ADAPTER WILL ALLOW PROPANE GAS TO ESCAPE IF THE VALVE IS TURNED ON AND A 1LB BOTTLE IS NOT ATTACHED...
USE COMMON SENSE
Do not teach your young children this... you're just asking for trouble as the adapter will allow gas to come out uncontrolled without a 1lb bottle attached.
Remember, your job as a parent,,, is to parent,,, that means teach good ethics, manners and common sense.
Don't raise stupid children and set them loose on society.
You can buy the adapters at many hardware stores and online shopping.
They're called REFILL ADAPTERS FOR 1 POUND (1LB) PROPANE TANKS
FILLING
If you can Pre-Freeze the little 1lb bottles for about 20 minutes prior to putting them on the bigger propane filler bottle, they will fill much faster.
I put them on in the morning and take them off at night, then put one on and leave it overnight and take it off in the morning.
1. Install the adapter on the large master 5 to 20 gallon propane bottle
2. With the master bottle (tank) standing upwards, screw the 1lb bottle (tank) onto the adapter.
3. Turn the master propane tank upside down
4. Open the valve on the master tank
5. Check for any leaks
6. Leave for a few hours to overnight
7. When ready, turn on the master tank valve
8. Turn the master tank with the 1lb tank attached upright
8. Quickly unscrew the 1lb bottle
10. Use window cleaner or soapy water to check the 1lb bottle for any leaks.
NOTE: if the bottle has a leak, set it aside in a secluded area where no sparks or flames will be present and let it leak its gas out. DO NOT PUT IT IN THE TRASH UNTIL IT IS EMPTY, it can catch fire and/or blow up.
11. REPEAT
SAFETY:
DO NOT pull the Schrader valve to let some gas pressure out.
I know there are a lot of videos telling you to do that but...
This is not necessary and you can easily compromise the Schrader valve causing a permanent gas leak, ultimately causing you to throw the 1lb bottle and any gas you put back into it AWAY and every bit of gas that leaks out while you’re filling it.
Now THAT IS NOT SAVING......IT'S JUST PLAIN WASTEFUL

  • Maybe change the written description on #7 to "closing" the valve. The way I read it was to turn it on instead of off. I have many ... many 1lb bottles but have only had my 100lb tank and so have not filled any. Now I have a 20lb tank and am ready to fill. Thanks for the refresher video

  • On our refrigerant recovery tanks we have to pull a vacuum on them when they're empty, before we can charge them. And we only fill our tanks 80%.. it'd be nice to go to have a hose so you can put that on a scale and fill it 80% oh, so the tank don't burst do the Heat

  • Do you have a method for checking the Schrader valve for leakage before filling it ?

    • You've gotta have pressure inside so if its totally empty, I hook it up and leave it for a few minutes, then check it...

  • I have a question for you how do you get rid of mice in winter? Your 5 gal bucket is great now but soon the water will freeze so you can't drown them. Yesterday I found a large nest inside my car's air filter compartment. I have to have year-round death traps both in and outdoors. HELP!!!!

    • If you want to use the bucket method in the winter, go get RV water line Antifreeze, its alcohol based and won't freeze. Many people use that in cabins and barns in the freezing winter.

  • I have brass caps that screw on the 1# tanks. After filling and leak testing I put the cap on to protect the tank threads, keep the tank valve clean and act as leak safety. My failure rate on refilled tanks is ~25%. Still worth doing. Thanks for sharing

  • Caution... It takes about 1 minute to fill a 1lb tank not including the chill time. You need to freeze the 1lb bottle for 30 minutes before refilling it because cold bottle will pull the propane gas. Did you chill your 1lb bottle? If you leave your 1lb bottle for hours like stated here, you will overfill it. The relive valve is doing its job by releasing the extra pressure. Research and Learn something new each day.
