Tom Pidcock DESTROYING Wout Van Aert | De Brabantse Pijl 2021

Tom Pidcock lined up for De Brabantse Pijl midweek against a deep field containing Wout van Aert, Matteo Trentin, Benoit Cosnefroy and more, ahead of this weekend's Amstel Gold Race and the Ardennes Classics Fleche and Liege-Bastogne-Liege. After a 3rd at Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne and promise at the Tour of Flanders, Pidcock was a big contender for the race despite his youth and the finale did not disappoint, coming down to what is surely going to be an iconic finish.

  • We interviewed Tom Pidcock on the Lanterne Rouge Cycling Podcast back in January to preview his 2021 season, discuss the benefits of cyclocross racing as preparation for the road, his target races and why the DMR made Warzone less fun, in case you missed it: kzhead.info/sun/iKlsgJiyrYt_Zqc/bejne.html

  • I may be missing something, but I don't get the 'all these things add up' idea at 4:23? Presumably the key measure would be energy expended by WvA vs energy expended by Pidcock. Pidcock must have spent loads of energy in his attacks on the climbs, so why is it necessarily more tiring for the guy behind to close the resulting gaps? Based on aerodynamics I would have thought the guy behind is still slightly better off. I suppose it was a case of Pidcock being "on a better day" than WvA, plus maybe tactics in the final sprint. And potentially a case of adding up total time spent in the wind over the full race
