I think having each of the girls really close with their moms and A’s goal to be to ruin those relationships through guiding the girls into discovering the truth of who their mothers really are would have been better. That way it’s actually targeting the moms who did what A is getting revenge for but also has the teens as the main characters. They could even have one of the girls actually find out what happened by herself early on and decide to try to throw the other girls off the trail to protect her mom then kill *that* girl off because she’s now an actual part of the initial awful act.

  • My entire thing with this 'A' is that the whole point of A in the original was that she was an unseen villain. No one knew what A was capable of doing; that's why the liars were so paranoid of everything. By making A into a horror movie killer, they took the intrigue and mystery surrounding A. It just seems like they're out to kill instead of ruining the girls lives through their lies and secrets, which sucks!

    • That, and I find it to be more terrifying (…in concept, lol) that A ended up being a high school girl. Of *course* she didn't kill as nearly as many people as this A did. Because 1) she ain't a horror movie serial killer, she's a villain personally there to terrorize a group of girls for her own specific reason, and 2) she's…in high school. Most of the time. With homework. When she gonna find the time? xD

    • That's what made A so effective in the original series. You never saw who it was, they'd be completely alone and get texts that reference where they were or what they just did. They get sent packages, they get literal notes embedded in their teeth. They find themselves in locations A sent them without them realizing. The reboot could've established higher stakes without creating this Michael Myers A figure making himself visible to them.

That they were always watching everything and had all the cards lined up. A never felt like an afterthought even if the writing many times didn’t support it. It always felt like A was around. Here it just feels like they’re not here and that they barely matter. And now what is he supposed to do in following seasons when his goal has already been achieved? And also you expect me to believe that this guy was not only caught and held in the hospital, no one, not ONE, not even the POLICE, take off his mask and run investigations on who he is?

  • Anyone else bothered by the fact the 5 liars aren’t actual *liars*? They project the recording of Karen in the theatre and when first questioned they admit to it and tell the truth. They discover their mums were somehow involved with Angela - first thing they do is go and ask them and have an open conversation. The only thing they “hide” is A texting them and that’s most likely cause it’s so irrelevant that they surely forgot.

    @MauFalcon@MauFalcon Жыл бұрын
    • Huh. I read it as the moms being the liars (constantly getting Angela into trouble by lying to her/others). They committed the “original sin” and A was going after the daughters to test their character in a “like mother like daughter?” way. I read the finale as the daughters being collateral damage for the sins of their mothers and not A wanting to punish them for something they did. Maybe that why it didn’t bother me that the main characters didn’t feel like mcs like it bothered Dylan. It kind of made sense to me that they were just five girls dealing with their everyday lives and suddenly having sprung all that A weirdness on them without explanation. Like the premise was to test if they were liars as well and not them being liars from the get go. I believe it was intentional to put them on the opposite side meaning not being believed although they were telling the truth.

Noa lied about her mom being the one on drugs, Tabby and Imogen's lie is probably the SA which is just hideous, Mouse lied about her meeting up with people like Steve, and Faran's scoliosis was probably supposed to be a big thing but then the writers decided to just resolve that story line

    • I know how to fix it for at least one character, and it would fix some other plotpoints. - instead of Karen being killed, it was actually Kelly posing as her. Karen now feels insane guilt as she believes she caused her sisters death. Everyone thinks that Karen died and Kelly was the surviving twin. - Karen overhears people show gratitude that it was Karen who was killed and not Kelly, as she was the popular one. This adds to Karens guilt and she decides to hide that it's her, and she lives as Kelly because she feels that it's whats best for her parents, believing her parents feel the same way. - One of the liars, most likely Imogen, works it out because Karen says something in passing that only she and Imogen would know, causing Imogen to come to the conclusion that Kelly was actually the sister who was killed. - Imogen then confronts Karen about it, asking why she lied, and Karen breaks down and tells her everything, she then begs Imogen to keep the secret and Imogen promises to. She doesn't even tell the other liars. This somewhat mends their friendship. - Somehow, A finds out about Karen and Imogens secret and starts to torment her about it, eventually threatening to kill Imogens unborn baby if she doesn't tell Karen's parents. So she has to. - Karen's parents find out and her mother is devastated to find it was Kelly who died, but the Sheriff (who in my rewrite tries to be a good man out of guilt for what he did to Angela) loses it. He no longer cares about trying to atone for his sins and he gets violent. - Karen ends up completely despising Imogen and their friendship is now irreparable as Karen blames Imogen for the destruction of her family. This rewrite improves Imogens character, as she's smart now, she actually has a secret to keep, and it has consequences for her, it also makes her pregnancy relevant to the plot as she only tells Karen's secret to protect her baby, showing she is willing to completely destroy her friendship to protect it. It also makes A an genuine threat, since he actively threatens to harm Imogen, and as we see A kill people, we know that it's not just an empty threat, he will do it. It gives Karen more of a character instead of just "mean girl" it gives her some depth and explains why she acts the way she does, showing it to be more of a persona she makes as a way to feel better about herself. And it makes the Sheriff a better character, as he wants to be a good person to make up for assaulting Angela, but at the end, he is just an awful person and losing his daughter makes him return to that as he feels it will change things as things worked best for him when he was awful.

The only time I was ever really emotionally invested was when we were talking about the moms and what happened to Angela Waters. It could have been a cool Yellowjacket like show where the mothers have to deal with the horrors of their past while trying to exist in the future. This one had a horror/comedy aspect to it reminiscent of all the horror movies it paid tribute to. I don’t see how your mom making you take the fault for her drug habit isn’t life changing. I don’t think people even paid attention and it’s sad cause it’s actually a good plot. This show was more diverse and had a lot of tribute to both classic and modern horror that people are passing off as plain cheesy cause they weren’t even playing attention long enough to see what everything meant. I feel like this show will become more popular later on once people rediscover it and realize they judge it too harshly. The original is dated and I can’t watch it anymore it’s just too politically incorrect in every way and it never gets anywhere. This was a improvement.

She knows that a) Imogen is pregnant, and must have an idea of how that happened, b) Imogen would be the one to find her, and c) that this amount of stress could cause a MISCARRIAGE. She didn't take her life because she was suicidal, but bc she felt guilty for what she did. And now her daughter has to deal with the consequences on their own. I hate her so much.

  • The reason why the original series was fun was because even though not that many people died, the stakes were extremely high. A was all about psychological abuse and A was extremely smart and cunning, no matter who they were. The fact that there were so many questions and inconsistencies about Alison always made you think that there would be a possibility that Allison was A (up until it was revealed Alison was really alive). Alison on her own as a mean girl/villain/victim was so interesting because she had dirt on EVERYBODY like the entirety of Rosewood was AFRAID of a TEENAGER, especially the ADULTS, making it extremely difficult to find a person who did not have motive to get rid of her thus there being so many A possibilities. The original was full of drama that somehow always lead back to alison. Oh your dad cheated on your mom? Guess what Alisons mother (later revealed it was actually her aunt I believe) was the woman he cheated with. Like no matter how you looked at it, everything had to do with alison. The reason Mona first became A was because of Alison, the reason charlotte became A was because of Alison, heck even spencers evil twin had something to do with Alison because it turns out spencer and her evil twin were actually the child of alisons aunt. Combine that with the fact that A always had stuff to blackmail the girls with to do all these crazy things and to even go as far as to hide bodies etc. was insane. Oh and don't forget that A actually tried to murder the liars (or at least harm them) like trying to run over hanna (I don't get how hanna ever forgave mona for that tbh). AND THE DOLLHOUSE?!?!!? Iconic, but so extremely insane and messed up on an emotional level. Sure half of the plots were loose ends but still, it was interesting and in the moment itself you could make sense of it we just never came back to half of the plot points. The liars as characters but also as a group of friends were interessting too because they were friends because of allison and they had to stay together because of allison and A, even though when alison was gone and A wasn't there yet, they stopped talking which made it very clear they were never really friends by choice but because Alison said so. On their own they all had their struggles but they were revealed when the time was right and a lot of the time they were part of the plot of A or again tied back to alison directly. Did Marlene mess up the A reveals after Mona by trying to outsmart the viewers instead of making Aria or Wren A like people suspected? Absolutely, but at least in the first 2 seasons she knew what she was doing and overall it was enjoyable to watch even with some fillers (which made sense because we were doing 20 episodes per season at that time so it needed fillers). Original sin is boring and feels extremely pointless. Besides the actual killings, there are no stakes. No mindfucks, nothing (sure there were a couple of texts but no where near the type of texts the original A send the liars). Personally that's what I liked most about the original A and they just thought they could replace it with brutal murder. Original sin also does not have a real Alison, who connected everything and who kept the whole mystery part going, nor do they have a spencer, who conctributed the most to solving who A was (actually found out it was Mona the first time) and who does their best to outsmart A (and succeeds a couple of times). Without those type of characters pretty little liars is boring and dumb, which is exactly what happened here. Also the fact that they just revealed who A was at the end of season 1 (sure the masked guy got away but his identity was revealed either way)?!?! Yeah I don't need a season 2 thank you I already know who it is now so let's just move on and forget it happened.

  • What also bothered me so much about this show was how FORCED the idea of A was. It didn't make any sense why the villain would give themselves that name. The entire reason why it worked in the original show is because it played with the idea that it might be Alison, someone who would have known all their secrets but is missing/dead. The name played into the intrigue. In Original Sin, there was no reason why they would go by A, and the "liars" (they aren't liars so what's the point of even calling them that) DIDN'T QUESTION IT. Okay, so "A" is Angela/Archie, but they have no tie to those people so why does it matter? And if the principle was the one masterminding it all, why would he chose A? Maybe they saw news coverage of the ACTUAL A and decided to piggyback. It was just a cheap shot at riding on the original A.

    • See I get that sentiment, but the problem is that PLL is a mystery. The tension and intrigue come from watching the characters try to solve the case and the twists and clues leading up to the reveal. With the books having been out for years it would take away the stakes as the audience already knows what’s going to happen. Sure they’ll be some people who haven’t seen it and will be surprised but when you can just Google to find out what really happens it takes a lot out of things. I don’t blame them for not wanting to adapt a mystery which already exists.

  • You’re right about the series being ugly- but what i hate the most is their girls SCHOOL. Everytime we see the schools it’s grimy, dirty, dark and filled with yellow light in hallways but then seems bright outside? I get it’s going for the horror element, and maybe it’s meant to be symbolic, but it just made it even harder to see everything and made the school seem unhygienic and gross ( which… i guess makes sense if the janitors gone ). But, it was just a weird choice aesthetically to me cause it felt so disjointed and bad

  • I think that for as much as Marlene King stretched out the smallest mysteries for way to long, I think PLL Original Sin has the opposite problem of not giving the mysteries any room to grow or develop. For example the deaths of the janitor and Tyler could have become solid leads for the girls to investigate if we weren't rushing to get the whole mystery solved in one season. Also we could have seen Imogen actually investigate instead of miraculously just guess in the right direction. When I was watching the show one of the only plotlines that held weight and involved genuine investigation was the assault plotline with Imogen and Tabby and I think if the show was paced slower the solving of that mystery could have been the season finale that gave us a sense of closure that was then ruined by whatever A did next. In particular I think the show would have been better if the girls didn't actually know whether Karen jumped or was pushed when she died (for one it would explain why they were so weirdly chill about a psycho killer on the loose and then the girls could be wrestling with their own guilty conscious and complicity as well building some more interesting parallels between the girls and the moms) and then maybe it's after a finale where Chip is revealed that they find out Karen was actually murdered, giving a better set up for a season 2.

I mentioned that they were making a spin off show and she just laughed and said that she might honestly tune in but when I told her Mitchell wasn't appearing she honestly seemed dissapointed. Until the events of the show forced her to grow up, face reality, and her mother's secrets. Her outfits could be inspired by popular film costumes with her own flair. It would be a way to showcase her personality, as well as her transformation. How she views herself through the characters she picks to emulate. Having a contrast between the characters she wishes she was more like versus who she actually is. Play with her dialogue by having a few of her movie dialogue lines foreshadow or misdirect the audience. In a way where she misjudged a person or situation. This show had so much potential. Hopefully, season two is better.

To me that showed this funny side of her I want to see more of. I think Tabby is going to be more open in season 2. S1 she’s more closed off because of her trauma. Overtime you could see those walls she built slowly fall as she started to grow closer w/ the girls. Theres so much room for character development and hopefully the writers get it. Its only the first season. I like your idea on using the film dialogue to foreshadow, that would add something to the show the og pll has never done. The potential is there and I truly like it.

His obsession with films and tv shows starts out as just a gimmick, but eventually is turned into a way of fleshing out his character by demonstrating that he struggles to relate to people, and thus uses his understanding of characters in media as a crutch to lean on when he doesn’t understand the actual people he is interacting with. So it became something that was explored in a really purposeful way and that taught us more about Abed than just “he knows things about movies.” Right now, all that Tabby’s obsession teaches us is “she knows things about movies,” and shows us nothing about who she actually is.

There is another movie that the name escapes me where a girl was relentlessly bullied and ended up dying because of it (was all an accident, she fell out of the window trying to escape her bullies) and her brother was the one who was killing everyone who witnessed her death and pretended it didn't happen. Wow... that MAY just be the one you are talking about but I can't remember the name of it because I never heard of it before I saw the review of it and can't be bothered to dig it up. It also had a secret father in it too where the death of his daughter was SUPER traumatic. Now that I think about it... that's actually a pretty common trope in slasher films/television series.

  • If you're gonna do a Michael Myers style villain, villain in background + loud noise isn't exactly the best option. Part of why the original Halloween is so good is the way you know there's a chance he's there, but you don't know when or where so you find yourself constantly scanning the screen trying to find him. Like yeah there are moments where you get loud scares, but those tend to be accompanied with either the score or a diegetic noise, and they tended to be when Michael actually attacks. Those scares are so good because they're earned; the tension builds and builds and builds, and then it happens and you shit yourself. The loud noise jumpscares have to be earned or they feel cheap. Also, honestly, I think that the staircase scare might have been even more effective if it was either silent or accompanied with fitting music instead of the loud noise.

  • The most intriguing thing about the original A was that they were always lying in wait only to appear to mentally abuse the cast. A was never meant to scary, but menacing, manipulative, and smart. Making the new A texas chainsaw knockoff just takes any intelligence away from him for not being able to understand who the girls are and how to really get under their skin. It also makes it so there’s reasonable belief about the girls being able to beat A because after all is said and done, A is just like them. A young sad victim. There isn’t a power dynamic in the ways they operate. They all played dirty, threw hissy fits, and used girl tactics to hurt each other. Making the new A just a killer man makes it harder to relate to the A character and makes it harder to understand his motives and method of operations when it’s just stand around and murder people. Original show’s A never really murdered anyone on purpose. It was never about killing it was about hurting people emotionally and mentally.

They did a Spencer twin all over again with a character that was so minimal that I wouldn't even call him a secondary character. In any good whodunnit you NEED the audience to suspect your chosen killer at some point and then go “nah, it can't be him/her” and then you shock them. What you can't do is invent your killer out of nowhere so you can feel smarter than your audience when in reality what you did is cheat, not outsmart. Think about Scream, you spend the whole movie suspecting is Billy and then it hits you hard when he actually is cuz you stopped suspecting about him towards the end cuz you thought he would be too obvious. It was brilliant, and the movie let you play along as an audience, while PLL never actually let you do that and gives a very condescending attitude “I'll be the one giving you all the answers. You are not allowed to go there yourself alone“. They clearly don't want you to guess it and they give you zero chances. That sucks.

  • My favourite part of PLL was that A was always kinda assumed to be one of their peers and was in the end. I think that was a really important part of making it scary for teens watching. The villan being outside their social circles feels so disconnected, especially bc their mothers were the ones who actually did something.

  • You know the saddest thing about the principal being “A” plot is that I GUESSED IT. Not because I was picking up on the clues the shows was _strategically_ dropping, not because I’m some master sleuth that can create a whole theory from the show’s breadcrumbs they call a plot, but because it LITERALLY COULDN’T BE ANYONE ELSE. We know that whoever “A” is wants revenge against the people responsible for Angela’s death so that eliminates all the students because they weren’t born at the time. It also can’t be any of the adults because they all, in one way or another, were responsible for Angela’s suicide - like the moms and Sheriff - or they were completely irrelevant to the main plot- like Mouse’s fake dad or Imogen’s dad (who I actually thought for a time was “A”). It could’ve only been the principal because he was LITERALLY the only other person in the show who was there and made sense for the writers to use as some dumb plot twist - and I may have ran with it if it wasn’t for the AWFUL, PATHETIC, performance he gave when revealing he was “A”. He sounded more like a loser getting back at his bullies then a serial manipulator, abductor, and killer.

  • Listen, flaws and all, the show had a decent storyline/characters. True, Tabby’s movie references got old FAST, Mouse’s (more interesting) backstory wasn’t really explored, and the finale wasn’t the best, but all in all, with Roberto at the wheel, it could’ve been worse. But shout out to PLL for staying true to their big sister show and making the A reveal pure GARBAGE!

He wasn’t even involved with them. Never showed them love. Never wanted to be in their lives. So why the fuck does he care to THIS DEGREE?

  • It kinda feels weak that this version of A just kills a bunch to show he's a threat. It's lazy storytelling, and frankly totally against the intrigue that PLL's A had. In PLL the idea was that this was happening to four teenaged girls all keeping secrets, and so the proverbial sword hanging over their heads was the idea that someone outside of themselves not only knew these secrets but threatened to out them if they didn't act accordingly. It was a manipulation game, but one that would resonate with teens and also feel somewhat realistic within the parameters of the story. Original Sin's A being a thrasher villain just completely disregards the whole reason why it's called Pretty Little LIARS. They are lying, keeping secrets, and A is meant to make them all turn on each other. Having a solid corporeal antagonist that they can all band against totally defeats the purpose of what A is supposed to represent, which is discord and disharmony.

  • Of all the reviews I’ve seen about this show, you’re the only one to mention that Imogene’s pregnancy literally brought nothing to the plot. I felt that as soon as I finished the show and my sister agrees with me. I suppose it’s meant to parallel what happened to Angela and A’s whole thing is that he goes after bullies? But you’re right, the show literally could’ve gone without it. I’m just over teen pregnancy in shows, it sends such a bad message! And that stupid plot to find out who that father is 😭 they really thought they did something with that idea! They were so happy that it got narrowed down to 66 people but where would you even start?? 66 is still a lot of people, especially if you don’t know which 66! But then they had a massive (and random) realization that made them think of Chip? It also didn’t really go into why Tabby had a hidden camera in the boys’ locker room, like was it part of a revenge plot, or was she using it as a way to see if she remembers who assaulted her? It was never talked about but it was so strange! And ILLEGAL since it’s technically child p???

  • When you're going off about how Imogen's jumps to conclusions don't make sense in the early investigation ... I kinda agree but also I wonder if they meant for it to come across like Imogen is reaching for something, anything, to explain her mother's actions. In the show, even when she finds out later that her mother had massive guilt over Angela, and struggled with depression, she insists it must have been A who murdered her mom. She can't accept the alternative, that her mom did that on purpose. She's not the first to refuse to accept that a loved one k-worded themselves. Idk if it's bad writing or what, but they could have for sure pushed that denial angle more. Imogen is young, under enormous stress and trauma, about to have a baby, lost all her friends and her mother, and now she's being stalked by a violent person. I don't think it's that strange that she's obsessing over a potential mystery that would explain why her mother did what she did.

    • Well, the issue is that too many of her leaps in logic turn out to be right, when the show should have found another way to put in the information. Like, I can buy that she might be unable to accept the alternative (though personally i dont think the show established that well if that was what they were going for) but that still doesn’t explain how she correctly knew to connect the flyer to her moms death, in addition to other stuff.

      @Ives268@Ives268 Жыл бұрын
  • one of the things abt the finale specifically that bothered me SO MUCH was the age casting of the principal in relation to the moms. he’s supposed to be angela’s father, which means that he should be old enough to be the father of any of the moms, since they were all the same age as angela. which ALSO means he should be the age of a grandfather to the liars, which absolutely cracks me up because he doesn’t look it at all, and it feels like the writers didn’t even think about that. the actor for the principal is only about ten years older than the actresses for the moms, the smallest age gap being 8 yrs between him and lea salonga. even if he was really young when angela was born, that’s a stretch. so… WHY?? if they were so determined to make it angela’s father, commit to the bit and cast an old dude. OR just make him an old boyfriend of angela’s (like they hinted at with the train guy) so that his age makes sense. it just pisses me off so much because it feels like there wasn’t an ounce of thought put into any of it
